Hoggart's detailed and tender portrait of the life and culture of working people painted a very different picture - of a culture defined by work and love. This classic can today help us get out of the bubbles we inhabit. As can each of the other books recommended: Alan Sillitoe’s ‘The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner’; Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s ‘Infidel: My Life’; and Aparna Vaidik’s ‘My Son’s Inheritance’.
