I just play through mono combo's usually and having troubles even handling that. Nonetheless I really like how you go through devices and their options. Thanks a lot!!!!
Thanks mate, that's the main riff from a Ragdoll song called Love on the Run. The Axe-Fx is basically a library of every classic amp, cab and effect you can imagine with the ability to run them in order order you like.
Ah so you got the japan one from ebay, i to watched Robert's video and had to have one, I got the UK one which came attached to a rack with the midiverb and compressor as a bulk buy, which i think was a bargain.
I can't think of why they made the outlines in the SPX-90 II with the unit title color. It looks so much cheaper and cheesier, but apparently is the same unit with more delay length. Was lucky to bump to it on local listing, didn't even realize it had been up for cheap for a while and nobody interested. Luckily Mr. Todd had also released a video about the unit a week ago. Seems to be common lately, thinking of a unit and Leon Todd has just made a video about it. This unit seems to pack a lot of quality effects, kinda surprised how cheap you can get one. I can't remember if it's a user installable or you need someone who knows what they are doing, but there was an upgrade that doubled the memory and added some other things that made it the equivalent of the SPX990. Also they have a quirk in that the case connects to the audio ground so you often see them installed with isolation washers in racks. If you rack it and start finding a lot of hums in your system, isolate it and it should go away. Haven't used mine in years, along with most of my rack gear. But that has more to do with my switch to sound editing/ mixing for film. Nice video. I'm starting to do more music now so maybe I'll drag that bad boy out.
@@LeonTodd www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-YAMAHA-SPX90-UPDATE-CHIPS-FOR-UPGRADE-TO-SPX90II-OR-REPAIR-Reverb-/273283020568. Again I can't remember what exactly it changes except to double the sample memory. I was doing a show at a theatre and they needed a sample that was longer than I had and I loaned the unit to them for the price of the upgrade. It looks like I may have misspoke and the upgrade gets you to the SPX90 II not the SPX990. So longer delays and more sample time.
One thing I never understood about these rack units is how to properly set them up with a preamp. They're kinda weird with only 1 input and 2 outputs. Most of the time it's 2 inputs 2 outputs. Any ideas?
Hello Leon, very good and educational videos, I have a question, I bought a Marshall DSL 40 and I would like to connect a Yamaha spx90 that I have saved for years and I would like to try how it sounds through the effect loop of the amp, is that possible? I already tried it directly to the input and it doesn't sound like I wanted. Thank you very much, greetings from the Netherlands.
So does the spx900-2000 have the same sounds with just more features? It would be nice to have those exact tones, but the ability to combine patches and use with MIDI. Thanks,Awsome demo!
My understanding is each SPX iteration does it's own take on the classics in here, and that each unit has it's own quirks. Probably all close enough for rock'n'roll!
@@LeonTodd Thanks man….Honestly, i just always wanted that EVH “Balance” detuned sound. The symphonic and delays are a bonus. Awsome video as usual brother!
Leon, not sure if you're going straight in using the internal SPX90 mix/ blend only? Would be amazing to hear the difference if it were blended in wet/dry/wet with the stereo wet added L/R in post, to help preserve your original dry amp tone. I guess you then need a stereo splitter coming out of your preamp to another stereo power amp with extra set of mics/speakers, or Load box/ I.R speaker sims. Still sounds fairly impressive the way you've recorded it just for demonstration purposes though. The classic 80's FX, still hold up remarkably well to this day.
I essentially ran it like that, 100% wet and blended in with the Axe mixer block. Tried it in lime and didn't like it as much so I can see why the mixer strategy is the way to go.
A couple or few years ago when I was in the market for one of these they were $75-$100.... I decided to go with a Eventide PitchFactor for that stereo de-tune thing. I honestly think that MXR EVH chorus pedal does the job just as good.
SPX 90 or REV7? in this video the effects even seem more vivid and deeper than in the other video you reviewed for REV 7 ...Is the SPX 90 equal or cooler?
Sounds great brother. The Zakk Stuff is killer and the delays and choruses were very good. Sorry, but have been very I'll. God the worst infection, and so I've not been able to do much, and today is the first day I'm even able to write. Be safe my friend. Great stuff..

Just a noob question here, but can you plug a guitar in the Yamaha spx 990 then out straight into a mixer? I know it’s wrong but will it work?
You can. It'll be noisy and pretty uninspiring but you can!
Hi Leon.... been following your videos for a while now..
Was wondering what's your options on noise suppression.
Any advice would be appreciated.
For these videos I use Izotope RX8 to remove noise from my vocal mic. If needed I use Izotope dehum or denoise on the guitar tracks but it's rare.
Nice video. I'm starting to do more music now so maybe I'll drag that bad boy out.
i didn't know that about the upgrade - I'll have to look into that!
I own 2 spx 90s and they both have a lot of white noise hiss. How do I get rid of that ?
One thing I never understood about these rack units is how to properly set them up with a preamp. They're kinda weird with only 1 input and 2 outputs. Most of the time it's 2 inputs 2 outputs. Any ideas?
I generally use them on an Aux send of a mixer
Could you replicate the symphonic in the axefx3?
yes and the video will be done soon!
Question Leon or anyone. If I can get one of these, what could I use as a foot switch to change the presets on it?
Any midi controller will do it
I have a chance to get a spx90 and a spx90II but don't know which one to go for@@LeonTodd
It slipped be fine in the loop, only downside is it will be in mono
So does the spx900-2000 have the same sounds with just more features? It would be nice to have those exact tones, but the ability to combine patches and use with MIDI.
Thanks,Awsome demo!
My understanding is each SPX iteration does it's own take on the classics in here, and that each unit has it's own quirks. Probably all close enough for rock'n'roll!
@@LeonTodd
Thanks man….Honestly, i just always wanted that EVH “Balance” detuned sound. The symphonic and delays are a bonus. Awsome video as usual brother!
What was your signal chain?
Pitchfactor is a beast of a pedal. Sold mine to fund an H9 but I miss the red brick quality it had
SPX 90 or REV7? in this video the effects even seem more vivid and deeper than in the other video you reviewed for REV 7 ...Is the SPX 90 equal or cooler?
can you make your own individual patches with these and turn individual effects on or off?
You can edit the parameters pf each patch and save them to user locations
Sounds great brother. The Zakk Stuff is killer and the delays and choruses were very good.
Sorry, but have been very I'll. God the worst infection, and so I've not been able to do much, and today is the first day I'm even able to write.
Be safe my friend. Great stuff..
Dude, rest up and mend well! Sending you love and good vibes.
Thanks brother. Been real sick with something I've never heard of until now called cellulitis, but I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
Thanks man.
@@hoosierdaddy2308 that's awful man. My Dad had cellulitis recently in his right hand and it was terrible.
@@LeonTodd Yeah. I had never heard of it until while at the Doctor I said I also have this Rash and the doctor said no, it's cellulitis. Terrible terrible illness.
Thanks for the kind words man. Appreciate it very much. On the mend ever so slowly.. Hope your dad's well too man..
Awesome..I used to have this and the Roland gp8. Btw can u get by with just fm3 over axe iii for home recording ?
Almost got a gp8 for 100 bucks last year, bummed I missed that.
Almost got a gp8 for 100 bucks last year, bummed I missed that.
@@LeonTodd GP8 was ahead of its time when it came out. I missed mine. could you let me know if you could get by with just fm3 over axe iii for home recording ?
@LeonTodd Coincidence........Speaking of older gear gear I was playing with my Boss GT-8 multi effects processor when the notification for this came up. I love when you review older gear and it got me thinking do you have one and so I would like to see you do a review and get your angle on it. "D"
I remember one of my mates got a GT6 and I got an ME50 in year 12 here - together we were indestructible!
Preset 4 is clean!
Dude dumb question but what was that chord right at 2:55 that you let ring out for a moment? I can tell from the finger position that it looks pretty normal but something about it hits so good.
No such thing as a dumb question! that's an open position E major chord. That progression is A - F#m - E -D (think Purple Rain)
@@LeonTodd huh so yeah it is just a standard chord, i guess just for some reason some combination of the tone and everything came together and resonated just right!
🤓I WISH U WOULD ALWAYS USE YOUR.....50W DSL MARSHALL & BLACK CUSTOM LES PAUL & 412 CABS LOADED WITH THE G12 75T SPEAKERS ......FOR ALL DEMOS !!!!!!
What's a PRS McCoddy? Just teasing, love your channel, Leon!
It sounds fantastic, great demo! I don’t suppose there are any pedals that come close to producing some of these sounds? Maybe an H9? How would that stack up against the rack unit?
I'm definitely going Ty try replicate it with the H9 and a few other units. The Yamaha Magicstoml Stomp had a symphonic made apparently
Might have to find mine.. And my ADA
Now there's a killer combination!
Amazing tones from that unit. I am usually shaking my head at the stock presets on pretty much everything, but those sound great. Does the SPX90 let you chain effects like Chorus + Delay or is it only one effect at a time?
Only one at a time
got me to pick up another rack because of this! found the 50D version for like 30$, thanks always for the great videos rack legend!
The 50D is awesome, same effects plus some drives!
@@LeonTodd saw you had one if I remember correctly! would love to see you doodle on it but I know its super close to this vid so >.< cheers browski!
Does this need a poweramp? or is it its own thing?
It's an effects processor, so if you want to run it with guitar you'll need a preamp and power amp
@@LeonTodd Oh okay I thought it was a Gallien Krueger rack type amp. Just got the Intellifex yesterday by the way. Killer chorus on this guy
Just a question: is spx 90 and spx 900 the same or is spx 900 the better version?
I think they're slightly different spec, the 900 has more stuff but the 90 is "classic"
Means: Sounds different?
Why is the symphonic chorus ‘infamous’? What’s wrong with it?
Great playing and sound Leon, What tuning is that??
