Fjallraven Trekking Gaiters - Real Review

Sizes : XXS to XXL is listed on the Fjallraven Web Site but on the gaiters it says One Size. When I purchased these from Campsavor last year, I don’t remember being given the option to select the size.

PRODUCT FEATURES
Gaiters in heavy-duty, waterproof polyester.
Zip at the front concealed under front flap with velcro.
Elastic draw cord in the upper part.
Elastic around the ankle and at the bottom.
Hook to fasten the gaiters to the boots.
Gaiters that prevent snow and moisture from forcing their way under and up the trouser leg. Made from very durable PU-treated polyester fabric. Zipper protected by flap with velcro closures. Elastic adjustments up to and covering the ankle. Buckled strap that wraps under the foot and the front, top section has a hook that can be attached to the shoelaces.
Forward : While the list of pros for these gaiters are longer than the cons, the negatives by fair outweighs the good. Because of that, lets focus on what makes these gaiters so poor for outdoor use.
Pros :
Excellent build quality
Excellent colors and styling
Impressively waterproof
Keeps snow out
Smooth zipper
Good features
Very tough and robust materials
Easy to put on and to take off.
Cons :
Deal breakingly poor breathability. Going out for a simple hike will leave your legs wet and your pants very moist. The performance is so poor that it could leave you in a fairly dangerous situation.
No strap keeper on the sides
Summary :
Fjallraven is a company that very rarely disappoints but this product is the exception.
There are two aspects which make for a good pair of gaiters;
They have to be waterproof and they have to be breathable and if either of this aspects are present you are going to have a problem.
Unfortunately for Fjallraven and for us, these Gaiters have the waterproof aspect down but they are so far away from being breathable that they are completely unusable. In fact, they are in my opinion dangerous in certain situations.
If you go out for a hike and when you take these gaiters off and your pants are wet you are putting yourself into a potentially dangerous situation.
As far as breathability goes, these are by far the worst performing gaiters that I have ever used. They are simply TERRIBLE and will leave you comprised in certain situations. For an example, go out for a cold winter trip and when you take them off, your pants are wet from moisture build up and the gaiters themselves will be covered in moisture as well. You then have two problems, your clothing is wet and so are the gaiters;
Do you change clothes, do you try to dry your pants? You will also have to focus on the gaiters to prevent them from icing otherwise the next day when you put them on, the ice will melt and your pants will get wet.
My advice would be look elsewhere if you have a need for gaiters; Outdoor Research, Outdoor Designs, Black Diamond and other companies offer products which will perform much, much better than these.

OSFA tag doesn't match their website description, material diverges from their normal materials, unbranded zipper, missing features that high end gaiters typically have. Methinks you bought counterfeits, ones that were convincing enough to possibly fool the retailer even.

Nah, it's the correct thing. I have a pair of those. They are waterproof and durable, but the water absolutely builds up if you are very active. I got them from the shop after I felt the material and I knew what I was getting. My use case for these is foraging and bushcraft in very wet conditions in tall bush. Kind where after 5 steps you would be wet. Keeps you absolutely dry while you moving around, but I take them off immediately after I'm done. These are for off-trail in heavy rain. If humidity is already very high the condensation is less too.Trekking with these is terrible like the guy said. They trap all the water and that strap is very annoying.

I have a pair of goretex outdoor research gaiters from the early 90's. Never had a problem with them and still have them.

Interesting, the gaiters I have are g-1000 and they perform phenomenal! I will also note that those color ways you mentioned are not color ways that Fjallraven offers. As a store manager for the brand, I am confident to say that the gaiters only come in the colors Black and Dark olive. Let me know if you have further questions.

You should reach out to Fjällräven and hear what they have to say. Maybe they should keep the design but switch to gore-tex instead of PU.

I think the problem here is that they are designed for a North European environment. Specifically they are intended to be fairly abrasion proof and worn over more traditional foot and lower leg wear, i.e. heavy long woollen socks. Essentially they are there to protect everything under them. Considerations like breathability come a fairly poor second.
If I need them to be breathable I'd probably pick something lighter weight from a reputable brand name.However speaking from experience in the matter I wouldn't put money on something like that surviving very long somewhere like Rannock Moor, or Glenco in Scotland.

Fair play, i love all the fjallraven products i have but not a fan boy. Reviews like this should keep them on the up and up!
I have 3 pairs of gaiters.
#1 Dirty Girl - which are lightweight & colorful for summer use. The material is stretchable & will cover & close the gap between socks & shoes/boots which prevents debris/stones/pebbles/etc from getting inside your boot.
#2 Knee-length Turtleskin - They are designed to protect my ankle & leg up to my knees from rattlesnake bites. Yes, they are hot & don't breathe, however, they are impervious to & will absolutely protect MEeee from the fangs of rattlesnakes & that is more important to me than my legs being inside a sauna.

Thanks for a straight-forward review. I can see and hear your disappointment in the vid. You got burnt this time; hopefully that doesn't sour you on the brand.
I have had the Swiss Army snow gators for decades and they are great performers. They are made of wool and breath. They are Milsurp and you love Milsurp so maybe you should give them a try for $15 not much lost if you don't like them. Sad they blew it on this product.
I will let you in on a little secret Luke. I have been watching UA-cam for some time now and one thing I don't do is subscribe to any channels ever, well almost ever. After all these years of watching UA-cam I am subscribed to two channels and yours is one of them. You are 100% correct when you say that your channel is not like most of the other channels out there. Only problem I've had with Fjallraven is with the zip fastener on a pair of trousers. I got it replaced with YKK fastener. Shame about the Gaiters, they look really good but pointless if they don't do what they supposed to do. Be interesting if Fjallraven get in touch! Thanks for sharing

Thanks for an honest review. You are right about other reviews online that are basically unboxing with no follow up actual use reviews. If someone isn't willing to use the product under real conditions, then they really shouldn't be giving advice to anyone about the gear.

He said he bought them from Camp Saver which deals with a lot of close-out and discontinued models. Fjallraven updates products fairly regularly.
With gaiters, I never my pant fully down over my shoes as normal. Always rolled up above my shoes, so the heat from my hiking boots can easily escape and my pants do not get wet in snow conditions in Scotland. Even with these poly versions.
I can tell you something to try that should help you some. At the 9:13 timestamp noticed you're wearing lowtop shoe's and that allows alot of heat from your feet and likely a little from your legs as you walk your pant material will rise up especially when kneeling and down letting body heat into the area between the gaiters and the pants with what's rising up out of your shoe's will help with condensation. For the majority of people they wear a 6 inch boot minimum and some wear a 8 inch boot especially in snow that was deep as the trip where you guy's chose to leave the mountain. If you notice even in screenshots of the gaiters the pictures are showing in use with boot's. Although I don't doubt their may have been a manufacturing mistake made even in your camping trip you had a fire made before removal of the gaiters and you just not wearing boots would allow the snow to be thrust up into the inside while walking.
I bought some gaiters from Outdoordesigns for like $23 years ago. Never failed me. Breathable and waterproof. Maybe I lucked out but they pretty awesome for nylon and polyamide.
They are really nice looking gaiters, too. It's a shame the don't function well. I have a pair of inexpensive nylon gaiters; cost about 25 bucks from a sporting goods store. Other than the nylon rustling sound when they rub together they work really well as far as waterproof and breathability.
I'm looking for gaiters as we speak, and now I see the model Fjällräven Singi that actually is made with G1000 as well as having a loop for the excess strap length. I'm just uncertain if those breathe better, and if so, how much. I am going to use them for snowshoeing so it is paramount that I can dump as much moisture build-up out of them as possible.

I have an unusual question for you. What about hot weather gaiters; to protect you from cactus, dirt/dust in your shoes/boots, scrapes, ticks, and are breathable? Almost like the cloth wraps/spats people in arid places used to wear.
Here in the northwoods, it seems more useful to have good boots and snow pants with jackets and removable liners. There was -30 degree temperatures for a week up here. So guarding against cold and frost bite has to be priority. This year, we are in a snow drought. We only have about 12 to 18 inches of snow on the ground, and it is melting fast. Last year, we had 4 to 5 feet plus on the ground. So for kids going to elementary school, they need to wear all their snow gear every day. When my sons were ages 6 through 13, I had 2 changes of snow gear for them. They go out to play in the snow come in totally wet and change out of one snow pants and get into another. Oh, and when they went ice fishing with Dad, someone would step into a drilled hole in the ice. Again, the change of snow gear and another pair of boots was important. That is life in the North.
I have used their products since 1965 when I was a member of the BSES/Royal Geographical Society expedition to ground survey the Svartisen glacier in northern Norway. In 1978 I purchased an Everest lll and camping fly tent. The tent is still in service TODAY. My son and his partner used it in the North Yorkshire Moors in 2008 and it was sole survivor of a freak snow storm on the campsite. I used to have contact with their Dutch distribution centre and had brilliant service from them for the UK. It doesn't sound like them at all.
Hey AF Vet here. Have you tried the Cold Weather Gear issue Mukluks? I was stationed at Loring AFB northern Maine, those boots was the best and I still use them. Oh by the way I am from Maine and love my cold weather gear. I actually bought an other pare. I am talking 1982. Those boots lasted until 2018.
A good pair of gaiters are fantastic. Too bad more people don't understand how useful they can be.

That was my thought - fjallraven is a high priced brand so the brand would be a target for counterfeiters. They could even be made in the same factory and then badged up elsewhere so the factory wouldn’t know that that’s what happened. Same for the retailer - I doubt they know. Worth checking with fjallraven themselves.

Add bad performance to sizing discrepancies. Could that be a counterfeit?
I bought these a while back, they were a waste of money. I wear my muck boots, so my feet stay dry but with these gaiters my pants got soaked. These are the only gaiters i have, so I thought all gaiters were created equal, but have come to find out there are really good ones available. Outdoor research makes a great pair of gaiters. This is the only fjallraven product i own that I don't like.
I have had the superior Fjällräven Singi Gaiters for several years and you should test them out. They have all the things that these gaiters are missing, G1000 material that breaths and a loop to hold the bootstrap end. They are slightly more expensive but in my mind basically the same price. 63€ vs 70€ (incl. Vat) here in Finland. This makes these Trecking gaiters basically pointless though I have heard that these might be good for really wet summer condditions when vading through a marsh or a swamp but the name is at least missleading.

I've always felt that waterproof gaiters are simply a waste of money and utterly pointless. They're not going to keep water out, after all they don't seal hermetically around your boots and if it's raining you're going to wearing waterproof trousers anyway. All they'll do is trap the water that's going to inevitably find it's way between gaiter and trouser. The temperature/moisture gradient that waterproof fabrics rely on to work is completely absent in this application. Fjallraven's own G1000 material would be a far better choice than this PU - coated polyester. All you really need/can expect from a gaiter is that it protects your trousers from wear and keeps stuff out of the tops of your boots to an extent. Waxed G1000 would be easily adequate for this kind of protection. My preference is for unlined leather gaiters - no membrane, and split leather - suede, essentially. I have some really amazing Meindl gaiters I purchased from a German sporting goods shop called Grube. Unfortunately, this is the ONLY outlet you can get them from, as they commissioned this product from Meindl according to their own specs. The price was unbelievable - £140 including shipping, but with an extremely simple and robust construction, including easily repaired buckles and and under-boot wire strap they will last FOREVER.
I wore Swiss Army surplus gaiters for years and they work just fine.

Agreed. I had sauna-like legs up to my knees no matter what the weather, pants soaked. Sold them at a loss after a few hikes, kicking myself for lowering my guard and trusting an otherwise excellent brand. Bought a pair of Outdoor Research Men's Crocodile Boot Gaiters as replacement. Haven’t had the guts to put them on yet - I fear another dud. The interwebs aren’t kind to them. Anyone had a better experience with OG Crocs?
I believe this model is for use in very wet environments.
They have breathable models as well and they work great for hiking.

Hey luke try the swiss. Gautier My friend is from Switzerland. He was in the military and i brought me back a pair i love them. I use them. Al ot when i go camping and hiking we use only military gear for camping. I was in the army from 1981 to 1988 then national guard till 1994
I've had gaiters in the dutch army that were made of goretex. Also they had thick rubber strip around the bottom that went around the soles of my army boots leaving the bottom tread free with a rubber strap in the middle. Very hard to put on but that's a waterproof gaiter. Guaranteed waterproof up to your knees.
70 dollars for a PU gaiter is just stupid. Might as well use a garbage bag and ducttape. PU and PVC raingear just sucks. You can get goretex gaiters like these shown in the video for like 30 euro's. I doubt very much how waterproof they are walking into a creek/river. Walking through a field with tall wet grass might be okay but that's not a true waterproof gaiter.

I have a pair in G1000 which are not waterproof, but very breathable. Not a problem when used in subzero snow conditions. However, beating icecrust off of them a buckle from the boot strap broke off. Maybe my bad for abusing them that way. Anyway, it’s probably the G1000 version you need.
As soon as I read the title I guessed what the problem was. My first set of gaiters was a cheap, generic product that trapped condensation just like that. I used them a couple of times in the winter and gave up on them due to cold, wet legs and feet. Now they only see use in warmer weather when I need extra protection from prickly underbrush. Thankfully I spent the money for truly excellent Outdoor Research gaiters, and have never regretted it. It's a shame that Fjallraven is charging a premium for crap like that.

I'm not defending Fallraven here by the way. If I had brought them here in the UK and had compared what I got to what the website states, I would be inclined to report them to either Trading Standards or The Advertising Authority. Quite possibly both.

I like to think that some companies appreciate having such thorough testing done for free. Fjällraven can now go back to the drawing board in an informed way and it didn't cost them a dime.
Thats what makes him trustworthy.
I mean I like Dan Becker, Backcountry Exposure, Darwin, Justin Outdoors and JK Hikes but they don't hold a candle to the fire like Luke does.

I've been disappointed a couple of times with purchases, so I'm not surprised about this review.
I bought the Abisko cap and only worn a few times but the elastic is now hanging by a thread, don't know how it got like that, but besides that it's pretty flimsy and I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it in windy conditions, I'll have to keep it for the best summer weather, as a back up.
2nd purchase was a wool sweater which looked great but I was shocked out how thin it was. Being an outdoor brand I was expecting something quite sturdy but I don't think this would have lasted more than few washes, so for $100 I didn't take the chance and sent it straight back.
I'm planning to buy a pair of Pro Vida pants as they look great quality and lots of good reviews. They seem to be a company with a good reputation but maybe dine out on that too much by putting out other sub par products which they can rely on the name to sell, hence how overpriced a lot of their stuff is.
I got some black gaiters from Partioaitta, cost me like 40€. Had to return the first pair due to a production defect but the new pair worked extremely well for me for whole Finnish winter. Personally I like them a ton!
Might get some military surplus gaiters made out of enriched cotton next now that I've found my love for gaiters.

Have you ever wondered why breathable rain shells have pit zips? Ventilation. You don't need the top of the gaiter pulled tight in ankle or shin deep snow. And if you are post holing in knee deep snow then whether the fabric is breathable or not is going to be a moot point - it won't work.

The best gaiter I’ve are the Berghaus Yeti gaitors, both Attack and the insulation ones.
I considered these until I saw the problems you had with them on that hike. I will stick with my old swiss military, I think they are, that are a weird rubbery stuff with wool on the inside. Never had any issues with them and I think I paid $3 at a gun show.
nothing beats a surplus set of wool military puttees.
It might be water resistant but not swet resistant.

I think if they simply making a hole near the top and had a downward facing 1inch tube you can plug would solve the moisture problom the pumpimg action of your legs would circulate the air .

@TOGR You can get military surplus, often new and like new, that are way better and way cheaper. Coleman's Surplus has the Italian ones made of thick, heavy duty canvas for $17.95 brand new. The Swiss military leather gaiters are even better and similarly priced. Hope this helps
