People often argue that Irene and other idols NEED short skirts to help with proportions but I think that doesn’t check out personally. High waisted things also work. Her legs looked long in the black and white outfit in Psycho and in Naughty.
The fact that she looks like that and people feel the need to be like that.
Girl needs to dance, if she was going for short bc of pure aesthetic they can reserve that for editorials where one stands still. It made me so mad when she was pulling her skirt down and people kept making fun of her for “not dancing well” enough.
It’s not like they don’t have the capacity to style uniquely and well bc Red Velvet looks amazing sometimes and “huh?” other times.

She said she picked the outfits for the album and stage, obviously it was her decision.

I hate it so much when people say they could have better outfits in zimzalabim era. Yes, the outfits were't conventionally pretty, but it fits the concept so much! People saying they could have better outfits and still fit the era... most of these people imagine typical kpop stage outfits. Concept of zimzalabim was cirkucus, was messy, was weird and the outfits fit the concept so perfectly.
Except Wendy green bag as a shirt I think the outfits were pretty nice
You can have weird and "messy" outfit that can fit the circus theme perfectly while making it look good. That what circus stylist usually do.
@@tnlkb6115 Yeah, but you can tell those are outfits with circus theme, because there are used certain patterns, cuts and styles. There is a variety, but after a few stages it would get boring. Moreover, zimzalabim would be much more labeled as a ''curcus'' concept with outfits like that when it is much more...

Red Velvet is the most versatile group of SM, you can't expect them to fit perfectly cause they always add their experimental touch to it.
btw, what makes something sexy is confidence and feeling great in it, if an idol is not comfortable in an oufit, it is NOT sexy. what makes idols like hwasa, hyuna and jessi feel sexy its not going to make everyone feel/look sexy.
Here’s how I break down all of Red Velvet’s outfits general trends:
Irene = Fashionable but not always practical. I believe that Irene always has the best outfits (which is fitting as she’s the visual). But some of them definitely aren’t meant for performing in as they’re too short and you can see that she (unlike Joy) is constantly trying to fix her dress to not keep riding up.
Seulgi = Typically wear clothes that are more suited for dancing in (ie they have some aspect of pants whether short or long) and that really helps her perform well.
Wendy = She’s all over the place and it sometimes feels like the stylists just took whatever was leftover and threw it on her.
Joy = I feel like she’s just used to having the shorter clothes at this point since she’s constantly wearing short dresses. If she was modeling, they’d perfectly compliment her figure. But she’s performing and they clearly make her uncomfortable at times. And I think the other members recognize this as they’re always shielding her during performances.
Yeri = She always has some form of jovial component to her clothes to align with her position as the maknae of the group. Her outfits typically are pretty well designed with just a hint of charm added to ensure that she looks endearing on stage.
I think short clothes are probably fine, as long as the idol can dance and walk around without showing the safety shorts and having to keep adjusting them so as to not expose themselves. Joy is taller than the average Korean woman, so they should tailor her clothes to be longer. Irene is tiny and it's absurd that she also has this problem.
I guess Red Velvet is the most "short" stature group in sm, female wise, when compared to the height of Aespa, Fx, SNSD, i dont know about SES.
And SM stylist probably are instructed or the stylist themselves pick the outfits. There is always a theme or occasion they have to follow but sometimes there is misteps.
Like shorter unnecessary dresses hard to dance on it, tacky childish blue dresses and bizarre outfits(Rookie/Zimzalabim). I know probably it was to separate Red from Velvet, and make Red Velvet distinct from the others in the 3rd gen.
But from 2019 and forward, the stylish picks are flawless!
Umpah umpah(might be plagiarism or not i dont know), Psycho, Monster-Naughty, Hello, Like Water, Queendom, Pose and even what we suppose they will wear to the promotion of Feel My Rhythm are so pretty, elegant, fit to the concept.
I think their worst era in outfits was Only rookie, bc zimzalabim can be justified until certain point(excluding completely Wendy green bacteria dress😫)

For the short dresses, just make shorts (that go over safety shorts) that match and cut slits on the side. Same look without the issue of having to pull the dress done.
I think Zimzalabim era's weird outfits fit the concept really well, and they dont look bad, just weird. Except for the mop top. That one is hideous. Horrifying. Poor Wendy.
you can be sexy and be fully covered up, you can also be almost naked and not be sexy, it all depends on what the idol wants to wear

I think Red Velvet has had a lot of really unique fashion statements over the years and I feel like they’re usually just ahead of the curb in terms of trends and styles too, looking back. They’ve always been super artsy and avant-garde so I feel like a lot of their clothes work for them. Zimzalabim had a lot of really great pieces but the way they were styled for some of the performances looked odd. I personally love Wendy’s fluffy top and I think the pink version with the jeans is actually really cute. They were kind of giving Euphoria before it was a thing. RBB is arguably worse IMO, I would rather look like a Euphoria character than a slutty aunty 😭
