    One of the best videos I've ever seen! So full of great information and ways to handle a difficult subject... emotional attachment. It's so helpful that you're totally honest in your advice. Many of us need to hear it but few influencers are kind ( brave) enough to tell it like it is. 👍☺️

    We are going through my mother in laws items today as I type this. I couldn’t believe when I checked the date on this that it’s a brand new video. God knows what you need at just the right timing too. The timer is a great idea btw. It will help me finish my own mothers items. (Gone a year and a half now)
    I sure wish you lived nearby! 🤗
    Thanks so much for sharing!! Great info and I love your stories too!! Thanks for all the resources.

    Norrine, I love your videos. I finally got around to clear out my papers. I emptied five binders, which leaves me with five binders, one topic for each. Those five binders will be a home for crafting material. I also cleared one of my small closets, two drawers and a double door below. The other has three drawers and three doors, which will need to be done when the temperatures drop below 90 F. It's currently near 100 degrees F. And then there are doors four and five of my big closet in my bedroom.
    I think you put a real meaning in Marie Kondo's idea of sparking joy.
    I used to be on the cultural level of hunter/gatherer, in the last six years I did learn to decide not to pick up something just because I liked it, but only if it has a dedicated use. It's a toughie to kick that habit, I do have relapses, however, the relapses occur two or three times a year instead of every month. I will carry on.
    Thank you for your compassionate videos.

    Norrine, I liked this video very much. First of all, I love when you mention your wild hair! My niece has hair like yours so I know what you mean... Secondly, if you can believe this, I buy vintage photos from antique stores, like your aunt did. I see these beautiful photos and want them to have a home again. Lastly, I adored the ring story, so special. ❤️

    When my mom passed away I got the contents of her safe deposit box. There was jewelry in it that I had appraised. Some of it was fake. But if my mom put it in the safe deposit box it had value to her. But no one in the family recognized any of it. But I couldn't get rid of it because I might find an old picture with great uncle so-and-so wearing this tie tack! So, to make sure my girls didn't face this problem in the future, I took out all my jewelry and wrote notes on each piece of who gave it to me, when, and why. I always had my girls decide between themselves which pieces went to each of them and wrote that on the note as well.

    I just discovered your channel today, and I love your content! Dealing with emotionally charged items proved most difficult for me. When my mother passed a few years ago, my dad packed up her craft room contents and brought it to me. It made me so sad that all her beautiful fabric, laces, ribbons, etc. were sitting in boxes in my closet. Then, I stumbled upon Junk Journaling. I created keepsake books out of her items for myself and my sisters to enjoy. Afterwards, I was able to donate the remaining items without guilt or remorse.

      My daughter rented an old farmhouse from the surviving children of an artist. Unbelievably, they did not want any of her craft tools, equipment, and art! My daughter called me and said the children were going to throw it all away if she didn't want it, So of course I came right over and got a huge easel, fabric, notions, tools, and paints. also some of her art work.

    Off topic. I used your 15-minute system today. I had so many small messes to clean up and was feeling so overwhelmed. I tried it today and was pleasantly surprised at how many of those projects I cleaned up today. I have a swollen leg challenge and got my breaks in between to elevate my legs. It felt so good. You’re a great influence on me.

      YAY!!!!!! I love that!!!!! I've had major health issues in the past - the 15-min method was one of the few things that worked for me. Knowing it was only 15-min allowed me to 'push' myself. Then I'd either be shocked that the task was done and I'd go on or I'd go rest. I am so glad it's working for you too. xoxoxo

    my first shadow box was for my Daddy with his high school football teams awards and mascot. Hey Norrine....girl, you provided a wealth of information in this tutorial, as well as some cute stories. If I can help you convince anyone to store their valuables in leak-proof boxes, let me just add this: many years ago, my husband and I separated and my 2 kids (1 was just a baby) and I went to stay with my Mom for a brief time. Long story short, I stored a lot of my cardboard boxes in her old garage where they would stay over the winter months. When I went to move about six months later, almost everything was completely destroyed, either rotted or moldy. Now not that I had a lot of valuable items by any stretch, but what was valuable and irreplaceable were my photographs, and to this day I don't have any baby pictures of my oldest child. I was completely heartbroken and still am to this day whenever I think about it. Anyway, I so appreciate you sharing, Norrine and have yourself a wonderful day!

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  5 років тому +3

      Thank you! I should have focused more on that.... as we just had another flood in our garage this last winter, and I lost a few of the kids things. If you can't invest in a good leak-proof box, at LEAST put whatever you are storing inside a large plastic bag and label it, so it's protected and you know what is inside of it!

    • @marilyncarlson7097
      @marilyncarlson7097 3 роки тому +1

      Be sure to check with close friends and relatives for photos. Don't count on them knowing that you have none of her. You need to tell people. They also loved your baby girl and might have pictures THEY took of her. Tell them "No rush, but please keep it in mind." An example: My grandmother was on a church mission 55 years ago in Texas. She took tons of photos while there of the people they served. One of the Texas families moved to Utah where grandmother returned after her mission. When my grandmother died 25 years ago my mom found among grandmother's things a photo of the Texas family. Grandmother never thought to give it to them. But my mom did. She took it to the one person in that family who was still in the area. Tears came to his eyes when he saw it. He confessed that his dad had gotten rid of all the photos of his mom and he didn't have one of her. He was so grateful. So, sometimes people who you barely knew may even have photos. If you want a photo badly enough, brainstorm with your friends and relatives for other people to check with who were your associates at the time.

    Thanks, this has always been a problem for me. Now that I'm older and having health issues, I'm panicking about it even more. I don't want post it notes on everything, but I don't want my kids to just Chuck things that have family hx. either. I think I might start a notebook dedicated to these things. I might take pix on my phone to supplement it then tell each one of them where the notebook is. I could even make suggestions as to who might want it or what might be done with it ie Aunt Sandy might want pic of her kids, or the church I grew up in might like pix of christenings in the old church and it's long ago Pastors from the 1940s or ducks unlimited might want antique hand made decoys. etc. Thanks for the inspiration.

    I have used the timer for years! I have the hate chores, and the love to do things. Depending on my emotional state, I set the time for 10 minutes of the hated things to do, and 15 minutes of the reward thing to do. I get so much more done this way! Sometimes the times are even, and sometimes the hated is longer--Again, the time depends on my emotional state at the time.

    What a great video with excellent suggestions! (Funny story too😁) Ref the digitizing photos - I don’t disagree, but want to share what I heard recently. It was a PBS interview with archivists preserving everything related to NASA and our space missions. They are collecting objects and docs from people who worked in all aspects of the various missions as well as from family descendants of those people. He emphasized that they do not want digitized material. They want tangible documents and memorabilia. He said because formats change, discs, flash drives and such would be useless because there may not be a way to read them in the future.
    That makes me view my boxes of CDs full of photos with some trepidation. I have to wonder if they’ll end up in a landfill down the road. Printing them out just creates more problems. Catch 22!

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  5 років тому +1

      Interesting - it IS a catch 22!!!

    • @ArtyAntics
      @ArtyAntics 4 роки тому +1

      Honestly I’m a bit surprised at this. As long as you don’t store digital files in proprietary formats you should be able to transition documents and photos to new formats as long as you keep up with the changes. It sounds like a lot but it is mostly physical digital formats and software that change but the files on them should be fine and the changes aren’t that frequent. I’m still using an external drive I bought 15 years ago, just make sure you back up the drive and store one outside your home in case you have fire/water or other damage. Cloud backup could work for this too.

    My item that I want to move along is a piano. I noticed that you have music instruments on the list, but don't see a piano on the list. Do you know of a foundation or service which would benefit from one.

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  5 років тому +2

      Piano's are hard - due the their weight and cost to have it tuned after moving. I'd check with local churches and senior homes. My Aunt has a piano at her Senior Living, and it's so awesome to hear it played by the residents. It may be an investment the church or home is willing to take, if the piano itself is free.

    • @dianaredflowers7928
      @dianaredflowers7928 5 років тому +2

      Hi Mary,
      If you would really like to give away your piano, you should thoughtfully consider paying moving men to take it to the place that can use it: like a school, a social center, etc. It will be expensive, but it will be out of your house and at a place where it will make music again! Maybe you could write off the moving expenses as a donation (for tax purposes) but check with IRS about this (I am not an accountant). Hope I was helpful 🌸.

    I need so much help ororganizing I am lost. When my dad died, I got a lot of his stuff, a year later my father in law, followed by mother in law. 8 years later was my mom and husband a year later. I have a large house full of everyone else's stuff and all my stuff was put in a storage shed when my husband and I got married. Now, I have 2 large storage sheds full as well as my house. I literally have to step over stuff when I walk around my house. My father had a lot of valuable memorabilia and I am so overwhelmed and cannot afford to hire help. Any advice on how to deal with 6 different deceased people's stuff????

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  5 років тому +2

      Reverse thinking. Because you have so many things to go through, choose the important items YOU WANT - and let the rest go. One donation pick up at a time. Don't let the idea of the item's 'value' steal any more of your energy. ❤️

      Nancy Noel, I am so sorry for all your losses! You can only do a little at a time. I would start with the storage units if you are paying rent on them. If not, start sorting near the front door area and put the items in boxes for keeping, selling, donating . Keep next to the door the donations and take out 1 box every time you go run errands and drop off at the nearest center. When I schedule a pickup from Salvation Army I find I am motivated to add much more at the last minute before they come to pick up. I inherited my best friend's vast collection of art, china, etc. She had inherited her mom's and grandmothers as well. The probate attorney told me to get rid of as many inexpensive or everyday items first in garage sales (I had 3), then sell expensive items on Ebay, eTsy, etc. which I did. the rest, he said I should donate to charities, or if a historical item, to a museum. then give away the rest or keep for myself. I had to try to liquidate the estate to distribute money to the beneficiaries as I was the executrix for her estate. I had to keep exact records of all sales. I now know more about probate than I ever wanted to! she had a huge amount of stuff including paperwork she would stash inside teapots, vases, etc. she had fought cancer for 4 years and really didn't care anymore. I had 8 huge trash bags full of paperwork I gathered before I even set about trying to sort it all out for probate purposes. My entire garage and most of my house was packed with all her belongings. After all the sales, I told my family and friends to come over with trucks and vans and start taking furniture, clothes, jewelry, knickknacks , etc. If you came over, you had to leave with something! I donated huge amounts to Salvation Army every few months for years. She passed away in 2003 and in 2021 I am still finding boxes shoved in the back of the garage with her things.

    Good morning! Just found your video! (Liked and subscribed!) I'm wondering about items that have some monetary value . . .I have a collection of "demitasse" cups that were my grandmother's. I have the memories of them from years ago and then after my dad passed away, it took a year, but I finally did get them in my possession - long, sad story. They gave me joy at one time, and now I'm ready to let them go to give others joy. What do you recommend for finding a collector or a value? I'm not looking to make money, but I don't want to give them away either - unless it's to a good cause. Thank you! JoAnne

      I'd see if you can find a group on Facebook of demitasse collectors.... see if anyone would like to buy them. Then you know it's a group who loves and appreciates the collection.

      B.,
      What I have done in the past, is take a sample of my vintage item to antique dealers and ask them if they would like to buy them from me. I usually go to the stores I like to shop at. They don’t pay you a lot because they need to make a profit, but at least I know the item will be sold to someone who will love and enjoy it. Hope this helps.🌺

      I want to say yes.... but technology is ever changing. I will have to mention that in the future - however you digitize, it WILL need to be updated! I just converted some pictures from old floppy disks for my Dad. Thanks, Annie!

    Digitize yea, but I would never throw away the actual item. The way to retrieve the items from a chip or drive can be lost, but the item is there once we are long gone. I can see a future of tons of chips and drives and no way to retrieve them.

      If you have a smart phone, you can actually just take a photo.... of the photo! It will put it in a .jpg format. Then you can safely store it on your computer or external drive. I may do a video showing how to do this.

    you have gotten me to think. I am VERY sentimental. I have things..crafting sewing etc from my mom. I have her mink jacket for years, still don't know what to do with it. I have my dads special jacket from bowling. it meant alot and special to him. don't know what to do with it. one of my son's has taken his bowling bag and balls. it's spook card for me to get rid of things, but I appreciate video in how it could be done. I will have to get myself to separate from the items.. isles me cry just to say that.. wow how bad I'm I ?..thanks for your videos..

      Not bad at all! Completely normal!!! Just remind yourself the 'item' isn't honoring your loved one... the memory is. So, if you're not using it - letting someone else LOVE it is doing the greatest honor. ❤️

    • @dianaredflowers7928
      @dianaredflowers7928 5 років тому +2

      I agree. The memory is everlasting. The item can be used and enjoyed by someone else.
      For example: I have bought vintage silverware flatware (not matching) from antique stores, thrift shops, eBay, etc. I USE THEM EVERYDAY for meals. I absolutely love my silverware! I like to think that some woman from 1910, 1925, 1950...bought them brand new as a newlywed...and now they are mine and they are loved. ❤️ Hope this helps.
