  • In this video, artist Steve Shaw creates an acrylic pour painting that combines two of the most common pouring techniques: the flip cup and the swipe. To merge these methods, the artist experiments with a technique he calls "edging." Watch the video to see what it's all about.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I have done some things and I hated it but yet my husband and 1 of my kids liked it. So it just depends on the person. The ones I just could not stand I threw away and prohibited it to come out of the trash.

Hi Judy, I agree the colors could have been brighter. If I were going to do it again I would use more yellows and blues.

I’ve never read actual negative comments. Not necessary. Every artist I’ve seen on UA-cam has knowledged reusing a canvas. The colors aren’t my favorites but I live watching a swipe.

I'm picking up on the idea that several people were not thrilled with the colors. I totally agree that the colors could have been brighter and prettier but as you know, sometimes the paint takes on a life of its own. You can see a good photo of the final piece if you click on the 'Show More' just below the video description. When the rest of the description comes up, click on the link that says "Read the full blog post". The final painting ended up looking pretty good - kind of dark and mysterious. For me this pour was more about the process than the final product. The challenge was figuring out how to do a swipe and a flip cup on the same canvas AND seeing if my 'edging' idea would work. Even if the final canvas wasn't beautiful, I really learned a lot while making it. Some folks were asking if the paint cracked after it dried - nope, it turned out just fine. Thank you all for comments and feedback. Steve

Also wondering if you got any cracking due to the thickness of the blue? It's so fun when the torch gets such results! I'm interested in trying a flip cup, but I feel compelled now to try a diagonal swipe from corner to corner!

Hi Mary, I did not get any cracking. I may have just gotten lucky though. I have to admit the torching of this one was pretty darn fun. Sometimes heat doesn't do anything. Other times Boom! Cells galore! Now as far as you and those diagonal swipes...that's a great idea! I have to confess, I have never even considered doing diagonal swipes but now I'm going to have to give it a try. Thank you for your comments. Steve

Hi Janice, I was a little concerned about cracking too but the canvas dried without any cracking at all.

Hi Marcia, No cracking! I have been adding Zinsser paint booster to my paints which may have helped the paint hold together. Or maybe I just got lucky. :)

Hi Debbie, for this painting I used a 16x20 inch canvas so I didn't have to worry about warping. But I liked Nicola's comment about putting gesso on both sides when you use the panels. That should solve the warping problem. Thanks for the question and thank you Nicola for the great suggestion! Steve
