    The reason why pros use less rotors bolts is to make rotor changes fast

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому

      It’s a benefit but it’s not the reason. Back then it was to make the bikes lighter. Pros have many sets of wheels so if they ever bent a rotor they’d just stick another wheel on.

    How's the sram guide brakes going? I've got a new bike with them but haven't been able to ride due to a broken elbow and just wondering how much stopping power they have etc

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому

      There’s been moments of brilliance when they’ve had lots of power but I’ve had a few issues that have spoiled the testing. I got sealant on the rear pads and I think it’s ruined them. I then crashed and damaged the cable and got dot fluid on my front brake. 🤦‍♂️. Once I’ve got them sorted with some fresh pads I’ll report back in a future vid.

  • @FoVision
    @FoVision 6 років тому +2

    Nice!!! I'm 6'5 and picking up my custom gray XXL LT tomorrow. I'm 265 kitted and have a short 32" inseam. I'm curious what rise your handlebars are and how many spacers you have for the stem/steerer tube. My wingspan is the same as my height. I'm not sure im going to slide my seat that far forward though because it would lessen the reach. Curious how many volume spacers you do and your weight as well. I'm doing a GX build.

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому +2

      Niiiice, this bike is going to be perfect for you. I’m on 38mm rise bars with 30mm of spacers under the stem. I used 3 volume spacers in the front and the big one in the back but I’m an aggressive rider. I find seat position is all about climbing weight distribution, if I feel like the front wheel is light going up steeps then I slam the seat forward. When descending you’re stood up so seat position is irrelevant. With shorter legs you might find a neutral seat position works but you’ll have to experiment.

      I am very curious about why do you slam your saddle forward and what is your saddle angle? as I am also pretty tall
      also as I do not have a dropper what do you recommend doing when I approach the downhill section of a trail or jumps drops etc lower the saddle manually from pedaling height to as low as possible ?
      basically, what do you recommend for folks that do not have a dropper?

  • @k1ngofthosewhoknow
    @k1ngofthosewhoknow 6 років тому +1

    Question for you! So I bought a 5010 that came with 2x slx cranks that I converted to 1x. I noticed that my chain line was angled when in the middle cog. I moved my bottom bracket spacer to the non drive side to bring it back over which worked, but messed with my Q factor. I noticed at 3:20 you also used 2x slx cranks. Do you have the same problem with your chain line??

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому +1

      I also run the spacer on the non drive side to bring the chain line closer to centre. When you say it messes with your Q factor do you mean that it just feels offset? I though Q factor was distance between your feet. I don’t notice the offset but didn’t try the spacer on the drive side to compare.

    • @k1ngofthosewhoknow
      @k1ngofthosewhoknow 6 років тому

      Whoops you are right Q factor it is the distance between your pedals, got my terms mixed up! What I meant was the center of crank to center of my frame, it's roughly 7mm to one side. Didn't know if this would have any negative long term effects on body or bike

    Did you compare it with Bronson CC and 5010 CC? I own a bronson CC X01. If you tested it is really the HT LT more agile by curving on flat streets than the bronson?

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому

      My last bike was a Hightower so I did not get to compare to bronson or 5010. 29’rs are never more “agile” as the big wheels take a little bit longer to change direction due to their larger rotational mass. It feels more stable.

      whats ur weight for that pressure? Im 194lb and using 32-35 psi

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому

      I’m about 195lb I think. Depends on the tires you use as well. I use 1 1/2 ply tyres or “Enduro” casings. If I was on single ply I’d go harder.

    Hey Ben. Have you ever tried an oval chainring? I've been running one for a few months now and I'm very impressed. A big improvement on the climbs and my bike accelerates much faster now. I'll never go back to a circular one! Love the new bike, it looks amazing! Those orange stickers were a great idea.

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому +2

      Hi James, used one way back the last time they were in fashion. Didn't really feel any benefits but it was on a DH bike so maybe didn't have enough time pedalling to feel the difference. In road racing they've tested them and found inconclusive results in power output so the choice ends up being down to personal preference.

    • @James_2194
      @James_2194 6 років тому +2

      I always assumed it was a gimmick. I read a lot of reviews of people praising the Absolute Black Oval Chainring. I needed a new one and this was the same price as my worn out 32T Race Face and decided to get one. Apparently, Shimano tried the oval thing back in the day but got the orientation wrong so it didn't work as intended. After buying one and testing it myself there's a very noticeable difference when climbing and a smaller difference when accelerating. Its dynamic size (my 32T changes from 30T to 34T with each revolution) eliminates some of the dead zone between strokes so you're on the power more. If you can ever get your hands on one I'd definitely recommend it :)

    Was there any reason in particular that it took you the best part of three days to build the bike?
    I regularly completely disassemble, clean, lube, rebuild and reset, adjust and retune all my gears shocks and hydraulics. All of that takes on average between three and four hours maximum. Obviously i don't have camera angles to worry about " but still "
    Also that is an absolutely awesome machine you have there and you are a very lucky boy indeed. I am extremely envious i must say, i just don't get why you didn't invest in a better group set. Seen as that is basically the most important and integral part of any bike.

      @BenCathro  6 років тому

      2 reasons, putting on invisi-frame protection takes flipping ages, especially in a cold shed. That took pretty much all of day 1. Then I was missing parts so couldn't finish on day 2. Filming is a total pain in the ass as well, spent most of the time standing around thinking about what angle I should get, what should I say to camera, chatting to mates who came and went. It was a pain.

    why sram brakes with Shimano rotors?
    beautiful bike btw!

    • @BenCathro
      @BenCathro  6 років тому +1

      SRAM brakes were cheaper and potentially more reliable (had loads of shimano levers fail). Ice tech rotors hold true better and run cooler 👌

    • @TheAtkinson118
      @TheAtkinson118 6 років тому

      Ben Cathro ..hi ben...very nice bike👍..so with the ice tech Rotors is it a case of just fit and ride?
      I too run sram rs brakes and was looking into changing my rotors. .i was looking at hope floating rotors but once i started searching the web people are talking about filing calipers to make the fit(which is a no go for me)
      I just want a solid performance rotors,6 bolt to fit and ride!
      Colours would be nice...but performance comes first!!
