I just realised, and it's kinda funny to me how Julard had the chance to be there because he won a GBB category which didn't even happened again, now in 2024
Thank you Dan for not weighing loudness like it's the only category on the scorecard. This GBB i really felt all the other categories were flushed by the judge panel; all beatboxers i heavily respect and listen to almost daily.. but it seemed like musicality and complexity didn't score nearly as high as just being loud. I'm still really salty about Stitch not qualifying and i don't even have any hate towards Julard either; he just participated and did his best. It's really the judging panel i'm disappointed in.. because if we continue to value loudness this high the less loud and more musical and fragile sound palettes will leave the GBB stage in the future.. because what's the point in training for years to then enter a competition that favors loudness above anything else. And then GBB becomes a "who can peak the limiter the most" competition instead. I really respect your ranking sheet and i agree with it.
On another hand, just to give some nuance there, power and loudness is key in a venue like this one. It's a show for a crowd, as much as a beatbox competition. So you can be the better compositor of the world, it means nothing without the power to transmit it to the public.
in battle loudness is very important and how you respond to your oppenent too it actualy have more value in battle if you see a battle live and get the energie of a counter in your head you will enderstand it complexiti and musiculati is very good to have but in battle if you get hard counter or sound bad or really less loud you will lose
@@julardbbx8091"In battle, loudness is very important, and how you respond to your opponent is too. Complexity and musicality are both very good to have in battle, but you will lose anyway if you get hardcountered, if you sound bad, or if you really are less loud." Ily Julard, keep it up.
The reality is that loudness and clearness is way too important, which would you actually value better for a battle format? Someone who sound clear but low or someone who sound clear loud and powerfully, yeah the first one might be interesting for showcases but, what is gonna do on a battle format? Stich has been on a stage for battleling and he was really in a lot of disadvantages just look at the florida from last year, battleling is not his style, he is good but not for this format
Most of Julard's groove is brazilian funk, if you want to hear it more just search on youtube and you will imediatly hear the drum patterns Julard used on the second drop
@@lil_sid1773 most brazilian beatboxers are used to that groove, but this approach from Julard was my favorite one... really insane the amount of power and bass on those snares
All the details in Julards beats like those little hats or clickrolls are so awesome and the video did his afrobeat drop dirty, it was straight gunshots
To me julard is the perfect depiction of what a good battle beatboxer is. Powerful, good freestyle, good tech, good counter, great sound maturity To me He definitely deserved to win
excatly hes a battle beatboxer, so ofc his elim isnt going to be "as good" as in battle conditions, ofc i agree with u but i would be a tie with blackroll and him for me
i think people really underestimate julard, he’s not just the loudest, he has great dynamics (one of the only beatboxer who plays with volume like its a sound of it’s own), he has great stage presence, intricate patterns and structures, super unique sound you don’t even notice (sub k snare, wobble tuh snare, middle liproll), refreshing rounds you don’t get bored of and an effortless attitude.
I really agree with your assessment. Julard's beat style is unique but the song itself was okay, and it was not very clean sounding. Power needs to be met with finesse, and I'm not convinced power is the most important factor. He certainly was one of the most surprising beatboxers during the elims, though, and his potential as a beatboxer is immense.
Not sure how people can start to argue saying loudness shouldn't be as much of a factor when live at the scene, this is key part to getting your sound across the actual main stage in the first place. How can one talk about "weighing more musicality" when you cannot get your sound properly as much to begin with? That's just how live battles and events are, especially on the biggest stage of the year. It's like as if one chose to sing because of "musicality" and while yes singing can improve musicality massively, if you sing quietly and without presence, it will never come across as good singing. This video genuinely does not do justice how much better he sounded in the elims compared to the rest due to his power, it was much more evident live... even on the livestream it was more evident. This elimination was to show that he is *present* and he really was, this is what excites people for a beatbox battle.
That drop at 0:50 is unbelievably crazy and unpredictable. What an insane performance julard! It definitely gives the chills and the bass the people needed
I think Julard is a special one, because for me and quite a few people I think he was solid but nothing too crazy. To me that means that his live performance has to hit like a truck for everyone to go crazy like that for him!
I didnt watch the event live. But this elim doesn't show me anything crazy. He had a bunch of dope shit but at this level they all do. Him winning the whole thing is crazy to me. At the end he was out of breathe and finished weak. I have to watch the battles and see who got robbed for him to win.
He's a battle beatboxer, in battle he literally the best but maybe in elim is style does not come through as much, plus a thing people don't even talk about is 2 hours before is elim he was at the hospital because he was very sick and still smashed it
Some beatboxers has good technique and complexity to their routine but without power and clarity, it will become less appreciated in live battle compare to those beatboxers who has power on their beat. There are beats that is good in recording but not in live. That's why some beatboxers are really good in wildcard videos but when it comes to live they are not shining because of less power.
TBH, as a hobbyist engineer, I think the execution was also SEVERELY harmed by poor mixing. This is even considering that Julard mentions he knows the execution was weak. There are right ways to mix quiet tracks, and squashing the signal until everything is muddy isn't it. It shows itself the most in the intro when the audience and ambient white noise gets SUPER loud when he's quiet (which is a hallmark of overcompression, the kind you hear stylistically in EDM). Even more noticeable when you play Julard's intro next to Stitch's. Think about it this way. If the audience is getting amplified by the compressor everytime he's quiet, every little breath, mistake, dry mouth, etc. is ALSO getting amplified. This is on top of the fact that compression absolutely destroys the punchiness of drum sounds if done poorly. I understand that the engineers might have been trying to compensate for poor execution by over compressing the track, but kinda sad seeing poor mixing when the competition is at such a high level.
@@andrewluk4327 I wouldn't assume the compression to be affecting both Julard and the ambience mic. I believe they are separated tracks, and of course there might have been a limiter on the master channel of the editing session, thus affecting the two, but maybe they compressed the crowds audio with julards mic as a sidechain signal ? I'm just guessing here, but I think compression isn't really the issue with these videos, whereas the lack of subs in the mix doesn't really give justice to Julards sound spectrum
