DIY Tiny Camper Part 2

- I added garage door springs to assist with opening and closing the flip-over bedroom. Without the springs, there was about 75 pounds of pulling force to lift it; with the springs, it's only 30 pounds--much better! I also added an access door to easily load and unload storage tubs when the camper is folded shut. I also added some PVC tubes to create a roof peak to 'guide' the water off the roof, which was fully tested in torrential rains. Brilliant design.
Never mind, I thought the video was over. Nice job.
Love the roof and springs and access door improvements. I'd add clevis pins with hitch pins (simply made from bolts with hitch pin holes drilled through the threaded ends of the bolts) to hold the 2x4's in place so they don't fall to the ground when folding the bed section closed, but are still easily removable for storage once folded. Then you could install the 2x4's by pinning them in place before unfolding, and remove the 2x4's after folding by simply unpinning them and storing them away... right now your system works fine, but this suggestion would make your operation look that much more professional to onlookers/potential plans buyers. After all, it's all about the presentation. I'm curious... does rain leak inside at the wall joints? Any mosquito/horse fly/moose fly infiltration? 1/2" plywood walls?
Wow, what a fresh idea, congrats!
Nice! Good job and inventive!
wow amazing, absolutely great job!
Thats amazing
I LOVE THIS AMAZING
Tom, your camper is so clever! I love it! Did you come up with the design yourself? Smart.
Thanks for your comment, yup I made a foamboard model of it to see if it would actually fold up before I made the real one.
Tom Sem - genius Tom... this is an excellent design!
Nice sunroof
Genius!
Excellent!
That's neat 😊
Trop bonne idée bravo
I had thought about a similar idea for a camper/tent hybrid. I'm thrilled to see that not only was I apparently on the right track but that someone with more time & skill was able to make it work so well. Awesome job! Definitely going to check these plans out.
Do you happen to know the weight of the camper & trailer? Or the weight capacity of the sleeper?
Cool, I enjoyed your comments, I am always surprised how many people are thinking about these folding campers. Weight of the camper and trailer is 750#, even my little Honda Civic can pull it. Weight capacity of the sleeper? Here is what I know: the buckling strength of EACH 2 x 4 leg is over 2,000 lbs capacity for each leg. So that means the two legs alone could support 4,000 pounds before buckling. But the bed structure itself couldn't support 4,000 pounds because it is is 1/2" plywood with 2 x 2 supports around the edges. I have not calculated the strength of the bed itself but my wife and I are about 350# combined and the bed doesn't flex much. I think we could easily put 4 people on that bed surface and it wouldn't have a problem.
Tom Sem Nice. Thanks for the info.

Is that a Harbor Freight trailer that you started with? You have years of carpentry experience I assume.
Yes, a Harbor Freight trailer. And no, I'm just a backyard hack with carpentry. Really the construction is pretty simple, just plywood and 2 x 2's. On a scale of 1-10 carpentry skill level, I would rate this a 6.
No roof when it's up????
I didn't spend enough time in the video explaining that it is a tarp roof. You can see it in some of the pictures. But in Part 3 I did come up with a folding roof made out of polycarbonate panels and aluminum hinges. That turned out to be a pretty complicated addition, and relatively expensive. It does reduce setup time by 10 minutes, but not sure if it was worth the $400 extra compared to the tarp roof.
Awesome! What size trailer is used?
4' x 8' trailer from Harbor Freight
Is there a roof?
Looks out stading. Can I use your concept to build a concession trailer?
Tiersmoke92555 great idea, it could be a concession trailer too.
that's great! do you have plans for that?
Yes, plans available at etsy.me/2fVjXEd
@@tomsem1 hey Tom, im not seeing the plans available on etsy....

@@garyhawkins9733 hmmm, frustrating. Well, go to Etsy and search "diy tiny camper" and the plans will show up. I will check what is wrong with my links, thanks!
How much did it cost and how long to make it?
Since the original design with the tarp roof, I have added a folding, hinged polycarbonate roof as well as some other improvements to get the total setup time down to 5 minutes. I think I am at about $1400 now. The first one took me about 80 hours to build because of some mistakes and redesigns. If I made a second one, and now knowing all of the correct dimensions, I believe I could do it in about 40 hours. I hope to post a video of the improved design in about a month.
