Thank you for highligting some important issues faced by Japanese or may be by some other foreigners too. That's part of learning and adapting to life in different cultures. Only the tough and willingness to learn and accommodate will be less stressful.

One way to say no in Malaysia is by laughing out loud and add la at the end of sentence.
    "How much is the rent?"
    "Hahaha.... Not that expensive la"
"You have beautiful eyes. Are those surgery?"
    "Hahaha... No la"
    "How much your salary?"
    "Hahaha... Ok la."
    🤣🤣🤣

It's normal to ask about price in Malaysia. Usually we ask it not to be nosy of other people's life but to survey for future or to recommend other choice.
For example, you buy something for RM50. The one who ask you might know where to buy the same thing for cheaper price, so they will tell you.
If you are not comfortable sharing the exact price, you can just tell the range price. Just said "I bought this below RM100" or "It's around RM100"

I agree with all the negative surprises especially number 4 with Onion aunties (makcik bawang). They're called that because of their extreme questions included with their own comments on your answer(usually harsh), for example I'm 34 and still not married and I am immune to them now. Sometimes not understanding malay is good lol.

    • @hawaandroid2786

Question on marriage status actually asked by every race in Malaysia, not specific asked by malays only.

    • @panzlithium
      @panzlithium 2 роки тому +8

@@hawaandroid2786 marriage status is an example. Makcik bawang carries a lot of topics, about not having child, your salary, your work, your car, your house, like they want to marry their daughter to you (which is not). Your failure to go back to your hometown every week is one of them too

is very normal for people to ask how much rent or the price for houses or cars. and if you think that the road are bumpy or rough, its very normal. it even worse in town. I bought China shoes from online, those shoes are fashionable too. less than RM 40 per pair. those are high heels too. For sport shoes, I prefer Sketcher though.

I usually won't tell them I do not wish to discuss a certain thing, which could come off too serious for a casual conversation. Usually for salary, we just say "cukup makan lah" (enough to eat) which is a casual way of saying we are doing OK. Normally, the asker will understand you do not wish to discuss more on this. However, some could follow up with estimation of your salary, just repeat "cukup makan lah" or say "ya, something like that". Hope that helps 😉

Hi Sunami, you are experiencing variation in culture. You will never find things as squeaky clean as in Japan (which I love and I have been to various parts of Japan many times). Malaysians try to be friendly in their way (but of course, not those nosy ones. Curious ones? As they say, curiosity killed the cat.). One thing though in Japan, it is almost a must to be able to speak Japanese to survive there. Here in Malaysia, many of us use English to interact especially with the foreigners. It may not be English native to that particular foreigner but it works. Even this video is in Japanese but thankfully with English subs. So, as a Malaysian, I apologise for the shortcomings in Malaysia but since you chose to work here, I hope you enjoy your stay. Live here forever? (as you said), hmmm...well...

Top 5 frequently asked questions by grab drivers once they know I'm Japanese:
    1. Do you like Malaysian food?
    2. Can you eat spicy food?
    3. How much is your rent?
    4. How much is your salary?
    5. Are you married or got boyfriend?

The 'not on time part' is so true. Me myself is an early bird/early person, I usually arrive 30 mins or 1 hour before the schedule time, and most of my friends usually come late. I always end up waiting them for 2-3 hours. Thats why whenever I meet them, if they said they're on the way, I will directly go to their house😂😂

    Sunami-chan, I'm a Malaysian
I agree with all 5 negative surprise, you speak all with polite way and teach some ways to overcome it, I appreciate it
For no 4, if you want to avoid these questions, you can add small laughter after you answer it.
For rent, actually Malaysian is really eager to know, 'cause they want to know current market price for house, it's normal question for Malaysian, Malaysian won't feel annoyed.
    "Do you have plastic surgery?"
Haha, I want to, but my husband didn't like it oh
    "How much is your salary?"
Good enough for me to spend and eat ah
    "What is your weight?"
Teenager weight lah, you can guess it, right? haha
    Thanks for love Malaysia!

About that time schedule. Maybe you should ask "are you janji melayu?" if they say yes come after 2hour promised time. If they said "I don't do janji melayu or I'm not that type" you may come 5min earlier or right on time. I solved it perfectly or just don't or rarely hangout with them.

Hi Sunami-san, about the 5 suprises you given is quite correct. Usually landed house will easily encounter cockroaches and ant, rarely on high rise building unless not taken well 😅 In malaysia almost everyone have car and the public transport need to be improved 😅 About straight foward question, Sunami-san can ignore it with a smile or just answer Ok la, not bad la , No la and end the statement 😂😂 i do get ask a lot of tis question by my friend and relative so i mostly just silence it not talk anything or just end sentences with ok la 😂😂 I hope Sunami-san can enjoy more in Malaysia and feel free to ask question if there is things need help. In my opinion Japanese rarely heard will go plastic surgery, mostly is natural beauty 😊😊

It is good for you to bring this up. Many foreigners have even accepted some bad habits of Malaysians like not being on time. Other people's time is as important as ours and we should not keep people waiting. If we are going to be late at least tell the person we suppose to meet the truth and not 'I am on the way'. The issues of water quality, roads, and pavements condition are true. They are bad but I see few Malaysians highlight the issue. The roads outside of KL is even worse. Even the national roads are bad. They used to be good but and now they are being neglected. When I travel, sometimes I have to ask myself whether I am in Malaysia or in some African countries.

Hi, I can understand your stress dealing with cockroaches. Honestly, what to do since Malaysian climate suitable for these crawlies breeding. Did you know that Malaysia has a cave with biggest number of cockroaches in the world living in that one single cave? Yes, water sometimes are murky brown. This usually happen if main water pipe part are broken. We welcome personal opinion. You can always say no. Be firm but polite in delivering your personal opinion. Malaysian can get pretty straightforward in asking question on one personal life. This behaviour might be perceived as rude or even nosy by foreigners. However, for many Malaysian, we ask questions to help us understand you better. Sometimes to get useful information too. For example, when we ask about rent, we simply want to know what the rate one pay for the area, if your rental is cheap than average rental in the area then we ask more question hahaha so that we learn how to get cheap rent in nice neighbourhood area. Or if one ask about plastic surgery, maybe he or she wanted to know where to go to get plastic surgery done. If you are woman, then the question will be about your marriage status or how many kids you have.

For NO.4 90% agree. We are too straight at expressing our opinion. It can be both good and bad thing depend on how you prefer to. As for me I prefer if people be straight but also not too straight. Just straight enough..
Now as for the plastic surgery, I don't know who ask you that but that is not normal.. Generally even in Malaysia, we don't really ask someone if they have plastic surgery because MOST of us do know it's quite of sensitive matter.

For no 4, if you are not comfortable when people asking about your personal matter, you can reply "I'm not very comfortable to answer that kind of question".
Yup, Malaysians are quite straight, but sometime they also don't know the limit or a polite way to ask.

  • @KunciMerah4031
    @KunciMerah4031 2 роки тому +1

You would be suprise if I tell you the solutions for number 4 problems. Usually when people ask you about something that are sensitive to you, you are either just laugh about it, or playing along with it with a joke. For example, someone ask, "did you do plastic surgery?" You can reply, "Oh yeah, I did my eyes, my jawline, my nose....", let them process your answer for a few seconds, and then end it up with, "I'm just joking."
People usually just laugh about it, and wont ask the same questions again.😂
Maybe foreigner hard to get use of making joke to Malaysian, maybe afraid of hurting someones feelings, but thats just how Malaysian is. It came out as being straightforward, sometimes a bit harsh too, but thats how we are as Malaysian. We can just cursing in front of each others face, but still can sit on one table together. 😅 Maybe thats just us. We also sometimes really curious of how foreigner gonna react if we said something to them. Because we dont know. It could be sensitive to you, or not.
But the most important suggestion from me, if you planning on staying here in longer terms, you have to study the language. I've seen some other foreigner channel that come to Malaysia, learning the language and sometime understand the joke too, its fascinating! When you can speak the language even just a little bit, you immediately understand everything.

Agree with all 5 points. We have more household pests, slower service, less punctual people, tea-coloured tap water (not in my hometown Ipoh though) and bad roads (for shoes and for vehicle tyres). Malaysian drivers are also much more aggressive and unsafe compared to Japan.

Haha, welcome to Malaysia and I just think that you need time to adjust to the culture here. What you just mentioned, all not a surprise to me and I laugh about it in fact. If there's cockroach, I'll take a slipper and smack it. Installing water filter is basically a must nowadays so I'm already used to it. On the way, most of us already know what it means. Being too direct, I think we are still not totally 100% too direct. There are certain sensitive topics which we prefer to keep it to ourselves. Road too rough? hehe, yeah. But all in all, I'm still proud to be a Malaysian and live in Malaysia, only wish is for Malaysia to have a more cooling weather and then confirm it's the best place on earth!
