TITLE FIGHT'S Ned Russin Talks 5 Years of HYPERVIEW

  • On February 3rd, 2015, Kingston, PA four-piece TITLE FIGHT released their 3rd LP, "HYPERVIEW." The record saw a departure from the band's previous post-hardcore offerings by incorporating more elements of shoegaze, slowcore, and ambient music. A divisive record among fans upon its release, HYPERVIEW has since grown a cult following, with many arguing that it is TITLE FIGHT'S best work to date.
I caught up with bassist/vocalist Ned Russin to see how he feels about the record all these years later.

When you're still young, life doesn't seem urgent, but it is. I hope these guys realize what they had/have. A once in an lifetime sound and chemistry is something you should cherish. You'll never have it again and you'll only know once it is already too late...

Hyperview was a very polarizing record. Lots of people hated it because it was so different but I loved it and was so glad they experimented this much. Also, notice how a ton of bands of that era started incorporating more shoegaze and alt rock influences after Hyperview dropped? Incredibly influential band that changed the scene forever.

I recall reading an interview that one of the members did preceding the release of Hyperview, I wanna say Ned but I don’t really remember, where he’d said that they’d essentially recorded two albums worth of material. As he put it, they could have released “one album or another,” so there’s potentially a whole unreleased record. Unless he was exaggerating, which is possible.

Title Fight was an incredibly important band for me growing up. I can hardly believe its been 5 years since hyperview came out. I managed to catch them playing here in Australia more than once, I'm forever grateful that they went through the process of organizing all ages, and under 18's shows, as the memories I made a their gigs are some of the best I have. Thank you for this interview! I'm regularly falling into heavy TF phases since like 8 years lol, and I realise that it's just one of my all time fav bands. And to learn more about the writing process of this album was awesome. Hyperview had a strong impact on my perception of music when it came out. I love how humble and passionate Ned sounds.
I still hope for some new or unreleased TF songs in the future but if there's no plans for that, that would be fine cause they already did their best when they had the time to do so and it's unnecessary to force themselves writing songs, and they are doing the same with different experiences / projects now. Stoked to hear the next GLITTERER record for example, and I can't believe why HAZE (one of Jamie's side-projects) went SO MUCH under the radar...
    Love them forever.

I got the chance to meet Ned when I saw Glitterer in Oakland last January right before covid shut everything down. I was stupid drunk singing everything hella loud in a pretty small audience HAHA. After his set I asked him for a picture lol he was cool about it and said yeah. As the picture was being taken I snuck in the question on behalf of everyone that wanted to know and asked “what’s up with Title Fight?” and he gives me the most piercing stare while maintaining a smile and said “We have no plans🙂” lmao I was like “that’s cool bru I fuck with glitterer! Keep doing your thing!” He thanked me for coming out and I was fucking hyped to meet him as I never got the chance to even see TF live. Diehard title fight fan here. I know this album is divisive, and it’s grown to be respected by many fans. But it’s hard for me to get into any song to be honest. Sounds like they tried to be slowdive

Just like some actors don't like to be typecast, title fight didn't wanna be genrecast. I like it but it's okay if you don't

@@ryanparker4996 I think it’s a solid record. But it is my least favorite.

this album was a perfect example of expirimentation gone wrong, a band moving in a direction they just weren't fully equipped to go in, and make it interesting or engaging anyway. Perfect example ;of a band that truly should have stuck to what they were good at. It's funny, when he was taking like "we didn't want to make a record that was more "mature", mature meaning more reverb and slower"...lol that's literally EXACTLY what they did, and EXACTLY h;ow it came off. The record is boring, simple as that. Even the performance here of them playing the songs for the first time as he said, perfect example of exactly what was so wrong with this record, NO energy, NO passion, soooo BORING. It's literally like watching kids who have NO IDEA how to play slow or less loud, so they try to and it just comes off as them doing a terrible imitation of a band that knows how to play slow...i dunno man, just totally fell flat on their faces with this uninspired record. They should come back and write another record utilizing what they are actually good at, because this was a totally shitty note to end on
