Ōdachi is such an interesting weapon. I find it funny how it's almost a short spear and can be used as such. If I remember correctly, its use was to counter cavalry? The edge alignment during a cut must be a nightmare due to the weight.

How did you get it looking so smooth after only 2-3 hours of practice?! 😱 Also, the field and the music for the opening and closing shots are beautiful.
All curved swords in Japan require essentially the same skill set to wield them. You merely need to adapt it and modify the way you swing until it starts to fall into something that feels similar to what you’re used to and then you’ll start to get the hang of it fast.
I believe with the Nodachi, the intention is the same as most very long swords. Keep your enemy at a distance with the point and guide them to the strong of the blade. The Nodachi is a endurance weapon, key word being endurance.
Oh wow, an Odachi…those are so neat looking weapons! Yep, I’m a Final Fantasy, and Sephiroth fan! Nice video, you looked cool, despite it being difficult for you to wield it. I’m a new Sub, as of today!😊👍🏻
With just few hours of practice, I think you did quite well! We don't see much footage of Odachi/Nodachi practice (rightly because that weapon is as you pointed out quite hard to handle due to its weight and length) so I am glad that you proposed one 👌 I think for my part that I'll stick to my katana training which is already quite enough to handle for my 'petite' stature 😅
Cloud's Buster Sword next!!! JK lol Really wanna see how you recreate moves from Sephiroth and Cloud. Recommend the Dissidia version because there's more moves there for Sephiroth. As for Cloud, the Remake.
How are you so handsome, charming, funny, talented and interesting?! Why you so perfect?! :D In other news, Odachi is a weapon in Nioh 2, maybe you can make a video where you do moves from the game in real life? ^.^
The Odatchi was a battlefield weapon. And seeing the moves that you were practicing, seems like it favors wearing armor. But I'm curious if it was also used defensively like the zweihander.
i think even back then, these were mostly just for showing off and ceremonies. i've read somewhere that the most use these got were early when cavalry was becoming popular and they used these from horseback or standing still to cut the horses of other riders. the idea was to get the other horse to buckle, throw the rider off or bury the rider under the horse and have the other pikeman finish them off. it wasn't meant to be fast or particularly sharp either, it was just heavy and purpose was to use the other rider's momentum against the horse, basically swinging or thrusting as they were running into it. as you show on the video, it's impossible to use these effectively against infantry. they'll surround you and there's no way to swing this fast enough to not get stabbed. even 2 people can easily kill you if you have to swing this around. obviously, swinging a big ass piece of steel at a weight of almost a ton of horse and man rolling towards you is like trying to cut down a tree with this, so it wasn't practical. naginata, yari and other pointed weapons were much safer against cavalry, so these were relegated to a display function only.
I suppose the length of the odachi explains why most of Sephiroth’s fights are in midair and not on the ground- where else will he get the clearance to swing the sword lol
Anyone know how to purchase one??? Your best bet is to seek out Japanese sword makers with good reputation. With luck, they may offer a standard pattern odachi. Otherwise, you can contact them directly for a custom order, but be sure to base your described measurements off historical examples, so you don't just get an unwieldy hunk of steel. Chances are though, they'll know what's up and may even say no if it's too outlandish. Also be prepared to become familiar with the terminology of different parts of the sword as measurements will describe measurements of those areas. Secondly, know your budget and know typical price ranges. If you're expecting a quality odachi for a few hundred dollars, you might want to readjust your expectations. That said, you needn't necessarily seek out a notable Japanese maker, they tend to offer high-end swords that stretch into $1500-$5000 (the fit and finish of those are typically immaculate). You can get good swords for decently cheaper than that.
It depends on your budget and patience. If you want from Japan, you talking about upwards of 20k very easily. You can get proper Chinese made nodachi but keep it simple and specific.

I love the Nodachi. I practiced a lot with it. It's great to see how a "big katana" needs to be used in a total different way because of it's dimensions! Btw keep it up. It's nice content!
Edit: Is the song at the beginning of the video a remixed song from Samurai Champloo?
Honestly I edited a while ago and can't remember where the music came from. but looking at the flower field, you might be right. I might have searched Samurai Champloo related music...
Sephiroth : Devuelve mi espada !
You must need a lot of discipline to master its technique and to hold to it at all times
Are you sure this is an Oodachi, shouldn't it be longer? It rather looks like a Nodachi to me.
same thing, names are interchangeable.
How about the Yamato? Like the one Vergil used in Devil May Cry :3
Its a katana, but Yamato is the name of the sword, ig.
It's a regular katana with a hexagon crossguard.
Whoa! Was this an actual type weapon that was ever used in combat?? What type of fighter would actually use this??
Yes definitely! Ōdachi was used on a battlefield. When big group fights were common way back in the day, I believe people tended to use longer weapons like Ōdachi or Naginata.
I have the miao dao. Much more durable sturdy blade, doesn’t wobble flimsy like odachi
Sounds like you got your hands on a cheap nodachi, they are not supposed to be like that.
Plese do something like this with the Nagamaki
That's too to be a Sepiroth Sword, his sword is supposed to be 86.45 inches (7'2") so it should be taller than you.
Coool

Thank you so much for posting this! I totally need this:) How heavy is this sword? I have been training for about a month with a 17.5 pound 69 inch sword for muscle and stamina generation. I try to do 1000 strikes a day. I'd love to collab with you. If your still located in LA I'd love to come train with you for a week or so.. I don't know any sword combat I just swing giant heavy swords for stamina and muscular hypertrophy.
Awesome, now you've just gotta dye your hair silver lol
Cool
Ashina generals weild the odachi like it's no problem 😂
You need energy from mako to using that sword 😆
This sword like master bolo in sf 3
