Ōdachi is such an interesting weapon. I find it funny how it's almost a short spear and can be used as such. If I remember correctly, its use was to counter cavalry? The edge alignment during a cut must be a nightmare due to the weight.

@@SpaceEmperorGenos yeah i’m aware of that sry, this is likely different because of the weight and for sideways cuts but what i said about the edge alignment of curved blades was found here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsih-mjXRpLYU?feature=share i figured that it would help if you built up some momentum due to the weight, sorry if that isn’t the case

All curved swords in Japan require essentially the same skill set to wield them. You merely need to adapt it and modify the way you swing until it starts to fall into something that feels similar to what you’re used to and then you’ll start to get the hang of it fast.

i think even back then, these were mostly just for showing off and ceremonies.
i've read somewhere that the most use these got were early when cavalry was becoming popular and they used these from horseback or standing still to cut the horses of other riders. the idea was to get the other horse to buckle, throw the rider off or bury the rider under the horse and have the other pikeman finish them off. it wasn't meant to be fast or particularly sharp either, it was just heavy and purpose was to use the other rider's momentum against the horse, basically swinging or thrusting as they were running into it.
as you show on the video, it's impossible to use these effectively against infantry. they'll surround you and there's no way to swing this fast enough to not get stabbed. even 2 people can easily kill you if you have to swing this around.
obviously, swinging a big ass piece of steel at a weight of almost a ton of horse and man rolling towards you is like trying to cut down a tree with this, so it wasn't practical. naginata, yari and other pointed weapons were much safer against cavalry, so these were relegated to a display function only.

    • @toriestrella
      @toriestrella 2 роки тому +2

Your best bet is to seek out Japanese sword makers with good reputation. With luck, they may offer a standard pattern odachi. Otherwise, you can contact them directly for a custom order, but be sure to base your described measurements off historical examples, so you don't just get an unwieldy hunk of steel. Chances are though, they'll know what's up and may even say no if it's too outlandish. Also be prepared to become familiar with the terminology of different parts of the sword as measurements will describe measurements of those areas.
Secondly, know your budget and know typical price ranges. If you're expecting a quality odachi for a few hundred dollars, you might want to readjust your expectations. That said, you needn't necessarily seek out a notable Japanese maker, they tend to offer high-end swords that stretch into $1500-$5000 (the fit and finish of those are typically immaculate). You can get good swords for decently cheaper than that.

    • @Driftxcess1

How much have you progressed a year later??
Reminds me of my Spadone lessons and my fumbling with an ô-dashi 😂One of the things i learned training with great swords type, is to remember that you need to move the pivot point of the sword a bit further down the blade especialy when you step/ spin.
Instead of always trying to force the sword to follow your body.
Spadone and other 2 handed great swords works the same.
Only a dude the size of the Mountain can use it like youd use a regular sword.
Once I stopped fighting the weight and inertia but forced myself to move in the center of where the sword wants to rotate, it started to slowly get more flow without hurting my wrists hauling the weight.
Works also for hirizontal cuts. Your reference in the video used it a lot for his change of orientation.
Keep making those videos, I'm learning tons from them!
    Thanks !

I advise how i use odachi, the right handgrip is for swing & stoppage power and left handgrip is for speed & control. When you swing, pull your left hand grip & push your right hand grip at the same time, you will get more speed & precision, and yes your must dance along the blade by lowering your body to have better balance like martial arts.

Don't know if you'll ever read this. But if you add some weight to your body, you'll find it a bit easier to use the sword. The guy in the other video was in full plate armor, with a bit more mass, you can anchor yourself better and the sword won't throw you as much, allowing for faster and more accurate strokes.

120cm? Well Sephiroth's Masamune doesn't have a canon length but it's eady to assume it's way longer (usual estimate is an overall length of 200+ cm)
(Unless I missunderstood something and 120cm is the length of the blade itself and the handle is left unaccounted for...)

I returned the sword to my friend but I believe I was talking about the blade being 120cm! The whole sword seems pretty close to my height.

I think this weapon was mainly used to chop off legs of horses (can imagine if samurai on horseback carried the odachi) but then it became just a object of ceremonial possession I think. But there was another longer one I think called nagamaki but I think that was more a weapon used by female bushi.

There's no evidence it was used against horses for that purpose, there's also famous wielders of the sword during this time against other warriors, schools teaching iaijutsu/battojutsu with it that exists to this day, ect.

I think you didn't get low enough to the ground. The guy in the video did the moves with a lower crouch. Probably by lowering his center of gravity it improves his balance swinging a longer sword.. from there you just need to balance strength and control to become graceful with it.

  • @mr.voidout4739

You're probably close to how a younger Sephiroth trained with his blade (before Mako infusion.) He wears his ShinRa-issued blade on his back, but it's (obviously) a bit shorter. Still, having only above-average strength, I'd imagine him starting out this way with the odachi. None of that octalslash nonsense (yet!)

How much heavier are odachi compared to katana, wakizashi or tanto? Is odachi supposed to be heavy infantry weapon or normal infantry? Looks very similar to a Chinese sword I saw- can’t remember the name unfortunately

    • @ToruUchikado
      @ToruUchikado  2 роки тому

It's a lot heavier. But I've only trained with this specific sword so not too sure about other Odachi unfortunately🙏🏼

I love the Nodachi. I practiced a lot with it. It's great to see how a "big katana" needs to be used in a total different way because of it's dimensions! Btw keep it up. It's nice content!
Edit: Is the song at the beginning of the video a remixed song from Samurai Champloo?

Yes definitely! Ōdachi was used on a battlefield. When big group fights were common way back in the day, I believe people tended to use longer weapons like Ōdachi or Naginata.

I try to do 1000 strikes a day. I'd love to collab with you. If your still located in LA I'd love to come train with you for a week or so.. I don't know any sword combat I just swing giant heavy swords for stamina and muscular hypertrophy.
