  • Taken from aboard the Herbert C Jackson this video was taken from on deck as we were leaving Marquette, loaded with iron ore pellets bound for Detroit. In this video we are backing out in order to clear the dock and turn the proper direction to head back out onto Lake Superior eastbound back toward Sault Ste Marie, MI and the Soo Locks where Know Your Ships Publisher Roger LeLievre and I would disembark the ship

A beautiful day. Kind of strange no fishermen or pleasure boaters about.

Great stuff. Really glad you identified the steering pole, I've been wondering why on earth they'd have a bowsprit.

I always wished I would have pursued a career on the great lakes freighters my grandfather was on the boats for awhile in the early 1900s out of Rodger City Michigan I'm 62 years old now I think it's a little late in life to try it now

Is it common not to use all the dogs on the hatches ? Short trip, good weather , not needed?

It’s more about the weather… flat calm, no wind or waves so they don’t use them all… they certainly do use them all though quite often

Andrea, you have done a fantastic job with this series; thanks. Can I ask, on shore in this video is a large white domed structure, do you know what the heck it is? It kinda looks nuclear but don't know.
    Thanks again!

That is called the Superior Dome and is a part of Northern Michigan University in Marquette… it is built out of wood! For trees specifically and is the largest one of its kind anywhere.. it’s in the Guinness Book as five largest dome and largest wooden dome in the world… it’s used for the university‘s sporting events and other community events as well

Andrea what are those black round things on rail that looks like a fan? Also there are things on the rail that looks like like a video camera?

You’re right those are video cameras that allow the Captain to see what’s happening alongside the ship and their purpose is often for when they are making locks and docks… the things that look like fans I believe are spotlights… I would have to go through the photos and look again to be sure
