    Love your video. Very helpful before my first time knitting with beads. There is a third way of using the prestrung beads - when you get to the spot where a bead needs to be placed, bring the yarn and bead to the front, snug the bead up to the stitch just knitted, slip the next stitch, knit the following stitch. The bead sits to the front of the work on a float.

    I have a big German book on knitting patterns with a tiny section on how to add beads. It just suggests the crochet hook method you show with the orange beads. I added small beads to a baby hat (as eyes for a braid owl) and might have preferred those to only show on the outside. Another 'Suzanne-moment' (wish I had seen that before 😅).
    Thanks for the comparison and good explanation! Just love your way of teaching!

    Thank you, Suzanne! I kept thinking that if I purled on the stockinette side of my work when beading, then the purl would be obvious, throwing off my pattern
    - but purling on either side of the bead doesn't present as a purl, anyway, so I'm thrilled to have learned this!

  • @jancaldwell8719
    @jancaldwell8719 5 місяців тому

    Suzanne, there is a 3rd method of adding beads by the crochet hook method: when you come to the place where you add a bead, using a crochet hook, add the bead. Then, do not work that stitch. Simply slip the beaded stitch to the right hand needle. Provided the WS row is a purl row, when you come to the beaded stitch that was slipped, you purl it. This method keeps the bead completely on the RS of the work.

    Just found your channel. How lovely this is for me. Recovering from a stroke and doing a bit of knitting again, just a baby blanket but it's a start. I'm planning a scarf with some bright beads I have and I'm so glad I found the tutorial by you. This has really enthused me to finish this blanket and start my scarf. I'm going to do garter stitch and so it won't really matter which way the beads pop out. Maybe do them alternately so that when the scarf is wrapped you will see them from both sides:). I'll experiment. Than yo. A bit of 'binge watching' coming up I think:).

    I agree. Very educational Suzanne. I’ve been wanting to learn how to put beads on both my knitting and crochet projects. You have been very thorough and I can appreciate the value of each. I think I tend to prefer using the crochet hook method and putting it on before the stitch is worked and then, when stringing using the method where you purled the stitches. But we’ll see. It will be fun to experiment! Thanks again for another amazing tutorial!

    I love the look of added beads to knitting and have always used the crochet hook method. But. Have you ever noticed that the beads can give kind of an icy feeling when they hit your skin? Brrr. So I am glad to see that the method of stringing them on first keeps them on the front of the knitting where this might be a problem. It's always nice to learn new things from you Suzanne!
    Also, I want to point out that if the holes are really small thread can be used to pull the yarn through the hole.

    Hi Suzanne. I have purchased the tutorial but mostly watch the videos. In my minds eye I did think the two crochet hook methods looked slightly different. Could just be me. I'm an experiences knitter, but haven't done a project yet using beads. I have 2 lined up, a small simple shawl and a pair of fingerless gloves. Can I assume the pattern designer has taken the bead application into account when they make their patterns? It seems to me generally speaking, adding beads with a crochet hook seems to be the best method and they look even and uniform. Excellent video, thank you!

    • @SuzanneBryan
      @SuzanneBryan  3 роки тому +1

      Usually, in the directions it will tell you how the beads will be applied. If they need to be pre-strung, you will have to do that before knitting. And as you could see in this video, each technique gives a different result.

    I tried to find beads, however, all with holes big enough to get my small crochet hook through were too big. It did not match.
    Now I found another method for applying beads on the st: put the beads on a separate yarn and with a small needle. With the needle go through the st as if to knit, slide a bead closer to the st, put the needle through the bead from right to left, then slide the bead over to the st and remove the yarn with the other beads on.

    Hi Suzanne, thank you for the video! I understand how to add beads now, but I'm not sure *where* to add beads. Do you have any suggestions for how to figure out where in a pattern would be a good place for a bead? I'm working on MMario's queen anne's lace shawl right now with lace weight mohair yarn and 4,000 lovely little 8/0 seed beads to work with. Hi Rayleen! There is really no right or wrong answer to this as it really a matter of personal preference. That being said, I am a math oriented person so when I knit a pattern I will generally try to space even intervals. And again, no right or wrong, in essence I go for something that is visually pleasing to the me. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I am sure that your lace project will be gorgeous! ❤️

    Thanks for showing

    • @SuzanneBryan
      @SuzanneBryan  2 роки тому +1

      Go back through the video and you will see some finer points that you may have missed the first time. When you put beads on your yarn in advance, they will sit between the stitches rather than on the stitches. If the bead is between 2 knits, it will tend to pop through to the wrong side. If it is between two purls, it will pop through to the right side of the fabric. If the bead is added with a crochet hook, it will sit on the stitch and will be equally visible from both sides of the fabric. It depends on your intended effect.
