Just a normal perspective distortion from shooting from far, and then to fool the perception is to use a super telephoto lens to get a tight framing for background control. You can see that camera was moved slightly up and to right to shoot the ace alone, but then still together when both heads are visible. Finally you see the perspective when it is zoomed out to wide angle to show the whole scene and the distances difference becomes obvious. Many believes that movies and TV shows are shot with wide angle lenses, while in reality they very rarely are if there is just enough space. As using long telephoto lens allows to control the background, get it blurry and yet have enough depth of field to get the actor fully in focus and give them some freedom to move toward and further from the camera so they don't drop out of focus. Same time you give more space to actors when you are on opposite side of the room shooting them and in soap operas you give them change to look the line cards next to the camera.

You mean when he lit the cigarillo? Is that what you meant to say? That he " lit " his cigarillo? I know people complain in the comments about those of us who are sticklers for proper grammar and correct spelling, but I do not care what those people have to say. We as a nation are just a few measly steps away from turning into the movie Idiocracy, and you can't even bother to learn how to use proper grammar and correct spelling? Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.
I like how Sergeant Cantrell witnesses Herod's speed here and doesn't look the least bit concerned, yet he can't come close to matching it later. did Herod not even draw as fast as he could here?
Herod cheats in the clock showdown gunfights, he listens for a click in the town clock just before the noon chime. Cantrell might have thought he could win with his own skills and gimmick, but was caught by surprise.
The answer is at the end of the film... Cort and Lady are using the trick of drawing just before the strike when the Clock ticks. You don't realize Herod's doing the exact same trick till the Clock explodes... cause he draws his pistol right before the Strike. but the clock towers set to blow at the same Tick cort and lady have been using. A fraction of a second makes all the difference. It makes sense Herod stacks the deck in his favor.
+JHATDRUMMER1976 That's the way it's always been. Most people bragging about something, are a bladder full of hot air. And then there are those, quiet as a church mouse, who will eventually surprise you big time!
Even though Quick and the Dead was a modern spaghetti western Hackmans performance was every bit as good as Unforgiven. Sam Raimi made his mainstream debut with this movie, as well as it jump starting Russel Crowes US career. Sharon Stone was the driving force for both of them being involved in Quick and the Dead.
If you think about it, Gene was basically just resuming his role as Little Bill in Unforgiven. This was just a hammed-up, more Hollywood and slightly silly version of him. And Ace was essentially English Bob; a lying braggart who was all ego, and who gets busted by Gene who knows the truth about his bullshit stories.
This movie along with many others I believe is a supreme example of how the 90s movies tend to be more modern and sophisticated-looking than the movies of prior-decades usually tend to be.
@ But Clay wasn't acting like something he wasn't. Ace lied and said he did things and killed people he obviously didn't do it kill. Ace was a lying buffoon, Clay was not. Clay just wasn't good enough to beat Herod. Plain and simple.
They do a great job of establishing him as a master gunfighter who is totally in his element. The slow re-holster, the blatant challenge of Ace's supposed skill ("how 'bout that left handed draw?") the way he casually drills Ace through the hand while appearing to not even be looking at him, but instead down at the lit match.
@@NomnomJawsnomnomin the context of the film: did Harod really shoot that well or were his goons on the clock tower helping him with "accuracy"? I always got confused by that
I know it's meant to be a hokey play on old Italian Spaghetti Westerns (a la the Dollar Trilogy), but Hackman really made this movie what it was and this was his only gunfight that I wanted him to win. Nothing like taking out flashy douches taking credit for your work!
Herod can shoot Ace's hand with his left hand while lighting a cigar without aiming, but had to takes seconds to try and line up a shot and aim to shoot Sharon Stone's character. A shot he never got off because of the explosions.
those were some good explosions, kind dull your senses a few minutes, also, he got no support from his henchmen, for once, he was fighting alone... and kurt was also there, even if he killed ellen, kurt would have finished him...
He only had to take time to line up a shot when he was facing Cort after each of the explosions, which likely disoriented him a little. Then factor in that he was also basically sitting on the ground leaning on his other hand. So the angle and motion is completely different, in addition to the mental aspect of him actually being scared of Cort, as seen by his shaking hand when he's getting ready to draw. As for when he duels The Lady, he's caught off guard, possibly still disoriented, all his men are dead, and Cort is waiting for him if he wins. Despite all of this though, he still fights her to basically a "draw" on the first shot, even when she makes the first move, or likely does. Duels like theirs and the second shot against Ace are hard to tell, since there is no clock to let us assume they started or reacted at the same time. The second shot is even harder to judge since we cut from The Lady aiming her gun at him to having to bring it forward. There are four things we can add to the previous things though, and that's Herod seeing and likely feeling the hole in his chest, the adrenaline or possible lack of adrenaline if he's coming down plus shock, be it physical or mental, and finally him having to bring his gun up and around from when he had spread his arm out a bit.

I used to smoke Cubans and Dominicans soaked in Rum or Cognac in the military. But now, the smell of either makes me sick
Herod (dastardly as he is ) really can walk the walk ...
It's a gorgeous popcorn film, silly and over-the-top. Just what I like sometimes!
I like how Sergeant Cantrell witnesses Herod's speed here and doesn't look the least bit concerned, yet he can't come close to matching it later. did Herod not even draw as fast as he could here?
they were match in draw speed, but cantrell missed, herod didnt
Of course they had who would be faster and win etc. But all the actors said Gene was the fastest because of his practice.
Herod cheats in the clock showdown gunfights, he listens for a click in the town clock just before the noon chime. Cantrell might have thought he could win with his own skills and gimmick, but was caught by surprise.
@@stephenmcculley788 Russel Crow must've been pretty good too.
What a film. Beautifully shot.
"How about that left hand Ace?"🤣🤣🤣🤣
Poppin them guns off is just cinematic therapy 😆
When the semi final boss and the final boss see who's the strongest.
The shots come dime a dozen, but nothing ever beats a stylish holstering. Gene's got a mean style on him.
MR.ACE HANDLIN,SCOURGE OF THE SAGEBRUSH,THE TERROR OF TUSCON,A BLADDER FULL OF HOT AIR!
JHATDRUMMER1976 Severely awesome lines.
+JHATDRUMMER1976 That's the way it's always been. Most people bragging about something, are a bladder full of hot air. And then there are those, quiet as a church mouse, who will eventually surprise you big time!
+Jeff Krong They are also frequently the ones you should mess with the least. The Stranger in High Plains Drifter definitely comes to mind.
so glad he died that lying sack of shit
A bladder full of hot air - I know a few of those types.
0:55 his grunts have always been their own character 😂😂😂😂
The flex of being able to light a cigar with your right hand while shooting the gun out of the hand of another man with your left.
Those people standing directly behind a guy in a pistol duel.
Lol yes its Crazy!
It may have been just a TV movie....
But it will always be one of my favorites.
I love how Hackman destroys him with the left handed draw that he was supposedly so good at.😂
This movie along with many others I believe is a supreme example of how the 90s movies tend to be more modern and sophisticated-looking than the movies of prior-decades usually tend to be.
The 90s is the era when technology & and talent were equal. Before talent trumped tech and now tech trumps talent

Best "oh shit" face ever
YOU DUN GOOFED, SON!
That moment you realize, You Are Fucked!
It was at this moment, Ace Hanlon knew, He Fucked Up!
Can't argue with that.
It’s so cool that Gen. Shepherd and Sgt. Foley were in a western.😂😎
“Either that or the biggest liar!” You can hear the growl in his voice
He despises liars because they're cowards.

It sounds like a hot pocket gently sliding into it's microwave pouch.
This is such a satisfying sound!
Lesson here is don't steal credit
The lesson here is don't enter gunfight tournaments
No the lesson is here is don't pretend to be something you're not.
@ But Clay wasn't acting like something he wasn't. Ace lied and said he did things and killed people he obviously didn't do it kill. Ace was a lying buffoon, Clay was not. Clay just wasn't good enough to beat Herod. Plain and simple.
...or anything else from a man who kills other men.
"It's a pity you weren't there to find out." I thought Herod was going to retort, "No, but I'm here today."
the hardest part about watching this awesome movie is the kids death.
Truth! Him reaching out to his father, the man who'd fatally shot him, but getting nothing in return hits hard.
This has got to be the BEST role that Gene Hackman ever played!
his best movie was ANTZ with Sharon S tone
Notice how he caught everyone’s eye on how fast he truly was at the draw. Even the professional gunfighter recognized this is no easy task.
😀 I really enjoyed this twist! Even after all these years later.
I love how he holsters his gun slowly after the second shot.
I like how you can see the smoke come out of the holster.
@@Synthetic-Rabbit He skinned that smoke wagon.
The coolest mullet alien style! 😊
gene hackman just may be the best actor ever.
Gene Hackman reminds me of my dad. Calm, quiet, but very serious. He even looks like him.
Herod can shoot Ace's hand with his left hand while lighting a cigar without aiming, but had to takes seconds to try and line up a shot and aim to shoot Sharon Stone's character. A shot he never got off because of the explosions.
the primal instinct to not shoot someone as hot as Sharon Stone overrode his ability to shoot
those were some good explosions, kind dull your senses a few minutes, also, he got no support from his henchmen, for once, he was fighting alone... and kurt was also there, even if he killed ellen, kurt would have finished him...
That was, at least to me, a laughable gunfight, especially with Hackman being cartwheeled backwards by her shot.
Gene hackmans one of the best actors to ever stand in front of a camera. Every single role he takes he smashes
Terrific film!
Spihk Heartbust!? analyze & discuss true positive effects for Bozeman Hotmail Recipient as result when Perry Server Tarnue Pulled Johnson & Wales Server Jamal's underwear!
Even though he lied I wouldn’t call Ace a coward. He was still standing there in front of another man to have a duel. That takes guts.
The fact he participated in the contest at all means he believed his own made up stories. How else was he expecting to not loose against someone like Herod
Resembled the spear episode from “Ace Ventura”🥲
What about that left hand Ace....
Sound design in this film was cutting edge for its time and still phenomenal.
It's like the Kid said: he's only invincible because they THINK he's invincible. If he shows weakness, they will realize that he is not as powerful as he seems to be and might eventually rise up against him.
Spihk Heartbust!? Spihk Heartbust at home fam & friends mates internet friends for a Bain Server who called Bozeman Hotmail Recipient ugly on Bain Server track during the moment Bozeman Hotmail Recipient Seen the Same Bain Server on a BLVD!
Man Gene Hackman is such a bad ass in this film, his cruelty and hubris is matched by his skill as a gunslinger, a true western villain.
"Yeah, I killed women and children and just about anything that walks or crawls, and now I am here to kill you Little Bill for what you did to my friend." The best western ever filmed Unforgiven.
Ummm, wrong movie...
P.S. Your favorite doesn't mean best...
That revolver spin and reholster is smooth AF.
I love this film the realisation on the face of Ace that he's screwed when his lies are exposed.
Wow, great movie, great actors! John P.
Hell of a good cast in this film
2:00 Gene Hackman wondering where the hell his cheerleaders are.
