Here we can see how relentless Stenmark was. He produced a perfect second run, showing uncomparable agility. Gros was a great skier too, however Stenmark was practically unbeatable at that time.
I raced when I was in my teens during this time period. I stopped skiing for over 20 years and took a lesson on my new skis. The teacher was laughing at how old school I looked. I came back to watch some of these to see what he meant. I see what he meant. There's much more weight and power on the downhill ski and less stepping and more carving on the edge today. The new skiing is easier and the skis make me feel like a superhero. And what happened to moguls, like real moguls? LOL.
Stenmark was on a different level than most everyone at skiing. Shiffrin is one of the closest to his level I've ever seen live. Stenmark will attest however that he never mastered downhill as Shiffrin has done.
Very interesting to go back an see how the technical mechanics of the turn has evolved. Understanding that the ski that they used didn’t transition into the next turn as well or effectively as they do today. Notice how they lift the inside ski back then. Today racers are able to generate much higher edge angles sometimes getting the inside hip inches from the snow. I have been watching a lot of videos of Mikaela Shiffrin race Slalom winning four in a row. Went back to this to watch the best in the world back in the 70’s and 80’s to compare how the turn has changed.
i learned to ski just before the mass transition to shaped skis and that skating step is done because those skis were very hard to bend in order to carve very tight slalom turns, so that was a method to set the new edge. they also require a very narrow stance to make the weight transition easier and make them turn. given the equipment, the pace at which he covers the distance is phenomenal.
Well, very interesting. As if we look videos from year 2000 WC, part of guys are skiing with these 200 (not 207 anymore) and part of guys with these smallies: 160 cm or likes. And the syle on both is just the same. Tomba did not lift the inner foot either with narrow stance and long skis. You could ask, why bother with 207 when you have to turn so quick, why not skiing with a 195 in year 1985 ? Another question in interesting too: how short skis they'd have, IF the minimum lenght is not in rules?
Thank You for posting this, two of the greatest skiers Ingemar Stenmark and Pierre Gros.
1) No helmets
2) No pole boxing
3) No fist protection
4) No shin protection
5) Very few cameras
6) Op-op-op-op cheering
7) ELAN ❤
My alltime favorite skiier.
Det er så vakkert.
Better, than Shiffrin, far better 🏆
Really? By what standard?

STENMARK THE GREATEST IN SLALOM EVER!

Ma quanti paletti ci sono in pista? Cosa servono?

Grazie mille.
