Bebop is the thing on this excellent outing as altoist Charles McPherson and pianist Barry Harris do their interpretations of Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. With trumpeter Carmell Jones, bassist Nelson Boyd and drummer Al "Tootie" Heath completing the quintet, the band romps through such bop classics as "Hot House," "Nostalgia," "Wail" and "Si Si" along with an original blues and "Embraceable You." A previously unissued "If I Love You" is added to the CD reissue. McPherson and Jones make for a potent frontline on these spirited performances, easily recommended to fans of straightahead jazz.~Scott Yanow Want to be featured on this channel? Charles McPherson, Albert “Tootie” Heath and Barry Harris are still alive today in 2021. I feel very privileged to have existed on this very planet at the same time as these three legends! Keep listening and enjoying this great music!
He's got the same age as I and we are still playing. 🎷🎶🥰

Just a self-reminder of how beautifully Charles closes up his solo, providing a sort of melancholic stutter which is picked up and developed by Barry Harris
AMEN. I should listen to this before eating anything. Before putting on or taking off socks. So much coded information here.AMEN
This was the first jazz album I ever bought - introduced me to bebop and jazz when I had my first sax, a tenor, many years ago. It's still one of my favorite albums.
Cool story!
I actually didn’t realize how good of an album this was!! Charles is still with us thanks be to God! He’s still playing saxophone and going strong!😮
... Este es un disco maravilloso, que todo amante del jazz tiene que conocer y debe tener en su discoteca. Esta es, sin duda alguna, una ¡obra maestra!... Cinco estrellas...
Yeah, this is a BeBop gem!!!
Niente male!
really killing stuff here, swinging and tight group
Now I understand why Mingus picked him.
i can barely hear the bass, and Barry is way back in the mix. The horns are fine, and a pleasure to listen to.
Absolutely outstanding!
Charles is terrific thanks for this great album!!
Greatness
This is SOOOO GOOD!
👏🏾👏🏾
Some of the Best ever happened to Jazz

I don't know why anyone would put this record up on UA-cam. There are great players on it but Nelson Boyd might have been sick because he can't play this day and when the bass is no good it doesn't matter how good the other players are, the music is no good. It's an example of record producers who knew so little about the music they were recording that they'd release a record no matter how it sounded.
Sounds fine to me!
The fuck you talkin abt?
Ur jive bro... NB is slamming on this date
Nelson Boyd's basic pulse sounds fine. Only the tone of his bass is of the older school of bass players-his notes didn't resonate as long as those of bass players of more recent times. Other than this, this recording contains music of the highest quality- this album is a great addition to anyone's record collection. I am truly proud of these inspired musicians: They prove that bebop is certainly alive when played with skill and creativity and a deep love of everything that beautiful in human life-a million stars for this wonderful record and these dedicated musicians, Rama Kumar-friend of Barry Harris and Charles McPherson-and now an admirer of the underrated Carmel Jones as well.
I'm absolutely sure that you always play the bass better than this. Please let us know where your performances are available on you tube.thanks
Charlie Mac. Truly on e of the unsung brothers of jazz. A true bopper on the money. A killa-dilla for reala.
Thanks for posting. I heard Charles McPherson and Barry Harris play together tonight (54 years later) at the Chicago Jazz Festival.
I think that singling out one of the players here is not fair to such an excellent array of talents. However, being a drummer by heart, I must mention Tottie's great comping and the tight snare-bass drum rolls. What a drummer he is!!!
The 3rd tune is actually 'Passport by Charlie Parker'
No it's not.
Excellent album, thanks for sharing.
I’ve always loved that Tootie solo on Si Si
beautiful band.
SOLID!!!
