Got a Champion Splitter? Watch Out For This Problem

- My Champion 27-ton log splitter has served me well splitting over 5 cords of wood, but it has a couple problems. It had developed a leak previously that was easily fixed by tightening a hose clamp. While operating it, the hose popped off from the same spot, causing hydraulic fluid to shoot out all over the place. Don't forget to subscribe and join us on Facebook, too / flatcreekoutdoors

My Champion 27 ton, 2018 model, had this problem. I emailed Champion about the problem and they sent me a up graded compression style fitting replacement hose for free . This was in 2021. Great customer care.
excellent info. thanks for sharing
I know this is from 2 years ago just bought this same model they changed the fitting on the higher pressure lines they are both threaded now for anyone wondering
Just bought a brand new Champion Power equipment 27 ton splitter. It appears that Champion has redesigned this splitter and changed the hoses to prevent this failure
Agree. Just picked up a Champion 27 ton splitter a month ago. They've redesign the connection so its much more secure and this will no longer be an issue.
I was gonna say, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I want to say thank you for making this video, my hose clamps were loose and if I had not checked them then somebody could’ve definitely got very hurt from the hot hydraulic fluid! Thanks again!!
From page 7 of the Use and Care Manual for the Champion 27 Ton splitter, under OPERATION:
2. Be sure to confirm all hose connections and hose clamps are tight BEFORE EACH USE (emphasis added). It is possible for connections to vibrate loose over time.
RTFM LOL
Thanks for that info. I will pay attention to that.
Quite literally why maintenance crews used safety wire on EVERY hydraulic connection on aircraft, as when those break free, pilots can lose control of the aircraft. It would be nice to have a safety wire hole in the nut with an attachment point.
I just bought this splitter brand new 1-15-22. They have since changed that to a screw on fitting. Your video made a difference. I bet someone from the factory viewed it or was reported a bunch. Problem fixed now.
I have heard from others as well that was changed. That's good to hear. Otherwise its been a good, reliable splitter.
You might want to get a high pressure hose made with threaded ends so that won’t happen again. Should be easy to do. They just use that low pressure return hose as a cost savings. You sure treated that wood, I’d charge extra for that pile. 😂
I like the way you think! This is the new E-Z-Lite firewood. Ultra premium product.
Gotta love unplanned fluid changes in the field. 😆
hahaa! I'm sure the fluid needed to be changed anyway. LOL
I bought a County Line 25 ton and checked the hose clamps before use. I was surprised that they were not tight enough. Thanks for the reminder to check each time.
Thanks for sharing this valueable information.
Thank you I just bought mine right now and I was just watching that video and it's good to know All this things before you know starting to use it, so your video is very helpful thank you
Glad I could help. Good luck with your splitter
Im loving that auto down feature
haha thanks! That "feature" developed late last year. I like it too
Thankfully they did fix this. The newer models are a screw-in for most of the host connections. I believe it's just a low pressure return hose that is a clamp on.
Since I have the exact same model I better check my hoses. Thanks for sharing!
yeah, definitely keep an eye on it if it has the hose clamped returns. If it has threaded lines for the returns, you should be good to go!
My splitter is the same one hard starting in cold wx. subscribed.
I will check mine. Thanks!
Thanks for the great video. My hose at the outlet of the hydraulic oil filter (same spot your failure occurred) just blew off my 25 ton Cub Cadet splitter so I did a quick look for videos to see what I could learn. I’ll contact Cub Cadet to see about a high pressure fitting, but in the meantime will reattach the hose, tighten the clamp and get busy.
I never replaced mine, just made sure the clamp stayed tight and didn't have another issue. I've since sold the splitter and got a bigger one.
Thanks for the tips.. I have the same splitter ans it's only about a year old.
The hydraulic valve is a little sticky as well.
Yeah, the valves on these things don't seem to be very good.
Good video. Yes will check hose connections every use. Yes do not like hydraulic valve handle. Feels like it wants to break.
I got baptized with hydro when i was working on a paper clamp. The spray looked like a shadow of me on the wall.
I buy good hose clamps at Napa and anytime I buy something like my 34 ton champ log splitter or Evan my kabota utv did the same thing the hose clamps that come on these just don't hold up so I replace them with the good ones right away and have never had a problem since idk why but the factory ones just don't do a damn haha thanks for the vid man great job !!
You should take the hose to Napa and have a compression end hose made for that return.
not a bad idea. thanks!
Great video, you saved my bacon, I checked clamps and they were loose, I tightened them up and they loosened off again. I put made in North American clamps on with blue lock tight. Thanks
Glad it helped
Email Champion a kind note to see if they send you free replacement hoses. I got mine.
I have that same Champion 27 ton splitter and mine has hydraulic hose with flared, threaded fittings for the return. Maybe mines newer? Definitely upgrade that return!
Good to hear they changed it over to threaded return lines. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a lot of complaints with these barbed/clamped fittings. Thanks for watching!
Wow- it really soaked that wood pile. Glad no one got hurt. High-pressure hydraulic oil can be dangerous. I’m really surprised it’s jus a hose clamp holding the line in place from the factory.
Yeah, its the return line so theoretically its not under nearly as much pressure, but it sure shot out pretty far when it broke free.
I have the 27 ton brand new. Have used it about 6-8 times and is difficult to start. 8-12 pulls. Any ideas!
Need to change the oil filter to make sure you have good flow once a year.
I had the same issue with the hose flying off. Is there some way to fix it? Or just make a regular point of checking it’s tight?
Hey Phil new subscriber here first time over to the new channel. I think you should sell the hydraulic soaked firewood at a premium and call it match light lol. I used my neighbors Champion splitter one day for a couple hours with some large rounds in the vertical position and it kicked my butt granted we were hustling. Just another reason I wound up with the Split Fire products. Stay safe and keep up the hard work with the new channel this is one thing I can definitely relate to.
Hey Ben, thanks for stopping by and checking out the new channel.
I bought the Champion 34 ton splitter almost a year ago, I didn’t use a SUPER LONG TIME yet, but I don’t like how the hoses are routed, the hoses jump around & I always worry about this happening to me
Back in the 70s I worked in a hard rock mine and and we had a lot of air powder equipment and when ever we put a air line on we used a small cable whip check so if for some reason the line would come apart it wouldn’t be flying around bashing you or others. I’m sure you could find some whip checks at the hardware or maybe Amazon.
That's a good idea. I've since gotten rid of this machine but that's a good tip for others who stumble on this video. Thanks for sharing.
I'm with the other commenters saying to get a regular hydraulic hose with fitting compressed on. This is a much better setup. While that return line isn't under much pressure. It can cause a mess and hassle and this would fix it. At the very least, replace the hose clamp.
Thanks Derek! I guess I'll have to add that to my never ending to-do list! haha
@@FlatCreekOutdoors That's funny, you have one of those too! Glad I could help add to it.
The fish in the background will love that oil....lol
I borrowed my nephew’s splitter (same model as yours) and they were loose. I tightened them. I then bought a used 22-ton Champion and the hoses/clamps were loose also. As somebody else mentioned, those should be properly terminated hydraulic hoses with threaded fittings.
Also that treated wood would definitely be worth more. They don’t require kindling; just apply a match! 😂
What keeps the splitter from falling back to the horizontal position?? Is there a pin? I just bought a new splitter!
Great video and grrat commentary. Unfortunately, most all splitters are Chinese made now days....
It was prob your return hose? If there wAs only a hose clamp on it. Some jack weed just forgot to tighten before it was sold. Thanks for sharing.
That exact same thing just happened on my Performance spitter. I tightened it down and marked it with a marker to see if it moves.
Have you split 30" green wood with the 27 Ton?
I did not read through the comments so I don’t know if someone else has suggested this but there are hose clamps that have a hole drilled through the nut head that tightens them so that you can safety wire the clamp to keep them from coming loose. If a clamp with the hole can’t be found one can always drill a hole in one. Of course the hoses should always be inspected and changed out within regular maintenance schedules but this will absolutely keep a clamp from coming loose. Just my two cents hope this can help.
solid tip. Thanks for sharing.
I just put a 25 ton together today and it has threaded hoses. Must have upgraded.
Good to hear. Hope your new splitter works out well for you.
I have this same splitter and I left it out in the Texas heat for a few days and ever since then I’ve had it die on me for the first 10 mins or so from starting it and it’s almost like if it’s warmed up it stops. I haven’t figured out the issue yet but I’ve had it just over a year now and have put at least 20 hrs on it. Hopefully you don’t run into my problem with it, other than that.. it’s a great machine. Enjoy the videos too!
fuel cap breather obstructed
Same thing happened to me with that hose coming off. I took the hose and fittings to a hydraulic shop and they made me a hose with screw on fittings. No more hose clamps for me!
Thanks for review. Looking to buy my first splitter. Seems like a cheap way to connect high pressure hose??
Exactly! DON`T buy a log splitter that has worm style clamps on the hydraulic hoses. Its just asking for trouble.
Bought mine new, I didn't like the filter setup so I modified it to a bolt together. That's a return line so theoretically that shouldn't have happened. Over the last 8 years I've run maybe 200 or more cord through it and it still starts very easy and splits fine for a log splitter that splits backwards.
How did you get the ram/wedge to keep moving on the splitting stroke without your hand on the control valve?
Unfortunately, that is not a mod. The control valve was broken and not working properly. I replaced the control valve when I sold the splitter.
I just got the same splitter and they changed it. Whybwould anybody put a hose clamp onba high pressure fitting ? The issue im having is i believe mine gets too hot. I put two large heatsinks on the cylinder, another on the pump and after i noticed that the filter gotbreal hot i put one there also. Manual says 4 gallon capacity. They give me two 2.3 gallon jugs of hyd fluid. And still not up to the center of the sight glass. Hmm.
I had a hose on the return line blow out at the valve body. Luckily I was retrieving another round to split. I think mine was caused by the weight of the hose and bouncing around. Once I zip tied it never had trouble with it again.
Sounds good. So you zip tied the line to the other hyd line or another part of the splitter to keep the line from bouncing around?
@@FlatCreekOutdoors I think I zip tied it it to both a line and part of the frame. I sold that splitter to down size. It was a 37 ton now I have a 25 ton. It's plenty big enough.
Is there an O-ring. I have a Troy-Bilt 33 ton and the pump return nipple popped out of the pump gear box and was stuck in the hose just trying to drain the oil to change. Are there o-rings to seal that in there or is it my pump is broke? Any ideas ?
That hose coming off would suck. I been thinking about checking all my. Nuts and bolts and hose fitting out, it Been little over a year now.
Take care
See page 7 of the care and use manual. The hose connections should be checked before every start up.
Can a second clamp be added also ?
I just ordered one. Thank you i think i’ll put a few safety chains so the hoses cant fly if comes undone
I've heard the new ones come with threaded connections, so it may no longer be an issue, but definitely keep an eye on your hoses and make sure connections stay put! Best of luck
Probably a indicator that the filter mite be on the old side of life.
As it would act as a restrictor.
ours has done that many time best thing is to replace the hoses with ones that dont have that clamp or it'll do that everytime you go to run it.
I’ve had this issue but they make a T bolt clamp that is a better design it’s about 10 bucks for the clamps at most shipped
The same thing happened to me and Champion sent me a replacement with compression fittings for free.
Thanks for sharing
Pull cord snapping back to nearly brake my arm, only second use. Please help. 27 ton champion splitter.
yikes. I've never experienced that, but if the issue persists, you may want to return the item to the store, or seek a warranty claim. Best of luck!
Has anyone had their log splitter wedge stop moving? It's like the power from the engine doesn't get transferred to the hydraulic lines or piston / cylinder. I see air in the hydraulic lines. Is that the problem? Or maybe I need to adjust the return pressure nut?
I have not, and I don't know what that could be. Maybe someone else will see your comment and help you out.
There is an adjustment for the reverse detent ball on the valve
How did you get it to stand upright? Mine has a little piece metal an it catches on that hit the fluid tank... looks like me it needs to slide up on top of it...
It should just pivot right on up. Sounds like it could have been assembled improperly. check the manual
it should pivot right up. Maybe yours wasnt assembled properly. Check the manual.
Just purchased this same splitter from Home Depot. I am no expert but It appears they have now gone to a compression fitting. I don’t see hose clamps.
oh, that's good to hear.
Hi I have the same one and I have a leak in the piston area have you seen that. Or anyone else had that issue.
I haven't had that on mine, but all hydraulic cylinders leak eventually. If its relatively new still, maybe a warranty item with Champion. Otherwise you can find a hydraulic shop locally put new seals in it.
My Champion 27 ton has an actual hydraulic fitting with a slight angle to reduce stress. So I am not sure why yours has a simple hose clamp. That makes no sense on a hydraulic line.
They changed that hose connection as of recent...no "hose clamp"...
A HARLEY log splitter !!! Vibrates itself apart !!
😆😀👍
Bought mine in 2020 and it came with both hoses having screw on fittings. The parts listing in the owners manual still shows clamps on the hose connecting to the filter. Being a safety issue, call champion and maybe they will send you a hose and fittings to correct the problem.
good to hear they might have permanently fixed this issue. Good idea trying to contact them for upgraded parts. I'll do that. Thanks!
I just bought one a month ago… so I hope I have the updated parts also, that’s a dangerous way to get hurt.
put a hose that has hydro fittings on it .like with my troy bilt both of the hoses has a metal coil the whole lenght of both hoses for that reason i figure.andif that hose would of came off at you good bet will would of been going to the o r to get the fluid cut out
You need to put crimp fittings and hoses no hose clamps
this happend to me before burned me a bit thankful i only was using it for about an hour
yikes. I check those clamps all the time now.
That filter in front of that fitting is not plugged & creating back pressure.
Good point. It's probably never been changed.
Could be possible that your filter was so dirty it was causing abnormal pressure on your return hose causing it to come off. There should be little to no pressure on that return line.
Possible. I think it just vibrated loose though. I ran it alot afterwards with tightened clamps before changing the filter.
If a hose clamp loosens on me more than once I replace the clamp.
I'm surprised it keeps splitting without holding the handle down. That doesn't seem right
Thanks Phil. Be careful out there. That design can mess you up.
To do list:
1. Hook splitter to truck
2. Drive to the dump
3. Unhook splitter from truck
4. Drive back home
5. Buy an American made splitter.
;)
😄😄 Good one. I'll get a better splitter eventually. Not right now though.
It happened to me
Haha how did the rain do on that Hydro oil? 😅 Hose clamps are both concerning and surprising to me to see. Get some made. Oh and Hydraulic oil max op temps are generally 185- 210. Most oils are made to this max temp spec range. You definitely don't want to wear it and don't want it to get on that hot exhaust while running
That wood is all long gone - sold it all last year and not a single complaint. A few months of sun and rain made it pretty unnoticeable. Thanks for watching!
Check your air filter because I got a 11/16 piece of foam for an air filter . Called Champion and they sent the same piece of foam to me. SEE my video on this.
The hose clamp needs to be replaced... even better would be hydraulic hose fittings not a hose clamp... here I'd go to Napa or Princess auto..
That seems to be the theme. Changing over to compression fitting would certainly eliminate the problem. Someone else commented newer versions of the same splitter don't have hose clamps.
Happened to mine changed to threaded. FYI it's going to happen to that crappy little plastic threaded cap on the end of the control valve also.
@@mikeosullivan6818 yeah that plastic cap falls off all the time... in fact the only time it doesn't fall off is when it's already on the ground...lol
Glad the oil didn't spray on you or one of the kids.
yeah, no kidding. That was my first thought after it happened. I'm glad my son wasn't there running the lever.
Hope you're wearing steel toes boots on those large logs. They are heavy and will make a toe sore for weeks.
So you noticed it was leaking, previously repaired it improperly. And now it blew off.
Operator error.
didn't know tightening a hose clamp was an improper repair 🤔 tell me more wise one
One of the worst thing I see on a lot of china splitters is the suction line and the return line are right next to each other. Any one who knows ANYTHING ABOUT HYDRAULICS KNOWS THATS A BIG NO NO.
People read the manual you are to periodically to check all hoses and fittings.
Before every start up, actually. I am always amused when people ignore the instructions, something goes wrong, and they want to blame anything but themselves.
It'll be easier to light with the oil on it
haha. Yeah that's what I was thinking too
Funny how such a simple machine can be messed up or have flaws by over half the splitters around
KEEP OIL TEMP DOWN...SAVES HOSES ! BE SURE ITS UPPER 3rd OF SIGHT GAUGE .
That wood cost extra now its infused with oil
Almost impossible to get any tech support
Sorry to hear that. I haven't had the need for that.
Double clamp it won't come off
Change the weight of your hydraulic fluid is getting too hot😊
Log splitters should have compression type hydraulic hoses on them, NOT worm gear clamps on the high pressure side. This type set up is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Hybrid wood, more btu s and easier to light😂😂🤣
😂 exactly
That hose should not be fitted with a hose clamp. You are asking for trouble. The manufactureer of that log splitter should know better. That return hose should have proper hydraulic hose fittings that will never blow off.
Things break dude don't be a baby
WASTE OF OUR TIME - this should have been a 30sec video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you're responsible for your time, not me.
