I love it! I also incorporate shotō whenever I get the chance. It truly does change extension and connection for the better. Long swords get in the way, and knife doesn't illustrate extension as well, so short sword is perfect IMHO. I train in Bozeman, Montana.
Thanks so much for your reply! I think I just asked you in a previous message where you train. Now I see your answer. Are you aware that I’ll be teaching in Livingston, Montana Sept 27-29? Hope to see you there! Back to your comment… I rarely come across people who have the insights that you already have around short sword. Extension and connection… Exactly. And yes, the knife does not illustrate it so well. Also, you might find in some of my other videos that I often break swordsmanship rules by letting my pinky and ring finger loosen up so that when the attacker pushes on my short sword, it can seesaw, pushing the butt/handle of my sword toward them, as in atemi. You lose the possibility for that effect with a knife.
@@liasuzukisvirtualdojo6240 It is true indeed, but the difference between the tanto and short sword. Myself a fewyears ago I was try to feel this extension using the Ichi-Ryo kata. The short-sword is used to create a distance or to double attack, blocking or controlling depending the position the blade is connected to. It is to different from Aikido I think. What are your thoughts about this item ???
We don’t have the short-sword in our training environment, but I will thin about the connection using a tanto. Personaly I have one and it must be learnful for the students to see and feel the extention-line in a demonstration. I see right now Irimi-nage is extentionaly on the back-shoulder instead of using the arm to reach the correct position engaging Irimi. Thanks sensei for your email to attention us of these techniques. For me as a thought the opponent isn’t using some small pressure trying to enter your center to get and maintain connection. Love this !!!
Thanks for watching the video. So glad to hear that you loved it. Using a Tanto for these movements is actually quite different. Good news: I’ll soon be offering beautiful Shoto for sale with shipping in the Continental USA. If you’re on my email list, you will be notified when it’s ready to go.
@@liasuzukisvirtualdojo6240 I live in the EU … Belgium … maybe to difficult to eventually get one or enjoy one of your seminars. But learning and thinking about takes also much time of a day. Who knows ….
