You know, if Sakura Shinguji was a playable character in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the series would've sure become more popular in the west.
About the villain of the 2nd for me is my favorite I can't say why, because spoilers, but his actions caused a lot of damage to the kagekidan members, specially Sakura, also it helps a lot that Kyogoku seiyuu is my personal favorite, with 3 I must say is my favorite game so in major things I agree with 3. About 4, considering that it was suppoused to be the end of Sakura Taisen I never would say that is the weakest, because considering the time and age, the game was rushed and the Dreamcast was practically dead, is a farewell game to a console and a farewell game to Sega as a hardware company, and as I said it was rushed, originally New York Kagekidan was meant to appear in ST4, but because the discontinuation of the Dreamcast the game was rushed and NY Kagekidan was scrapped out of it, and ST 5 exists thanks to it, yeah I know the game is short, but considering how everything ended for Ogami I would say is a satisfying conclussion for the Ogami saga, that's why considering that the game is really short I forgive him, and this wouldn't be skip. (Also the main villain of 4 is Nagayasu and he wanted to destroy Teito because the old citizens of Ginza betrayed him and killed him, is explained in game and also Nagayasu story is part of Japan's old Edo period, you can do some research there.) Well about 5 is a great game ( also is Kayama and not Kamiyama hehehe, Kamiyama is from Shin Sakura Taisen :P) well about the 2 girls I think that you mean about Sagiita and Subaru (Subaru gender isn't confirm) for me it wasn't much of a deal that they were assholes with Taiga, because it remind me a little about Orihime and Reni from ST2, but I guess you could say that because Sagiita is an asshole with you, because she sees you as a kid and Subaru just has social problems, which is understandable, but as ST 2 teached me, don't keep with your first impressions only, because the good side of both girls will reveal after the end of their arcs, personally I enjoyed the area move, and the cameratron gameplay, but what really like the most was the Tsubasa mote or Winged mode aerial combat is awesome.
Oh I totally agree. The aerial combat is really cool, but since it's mostly a visual change and the mechanics are near identical to the ground combat I didn't feel it necessary to address it. In Hindsght I probably should've at least mentioned it.
And finally I know this is more a retrospective of the original games and media, but I think call SST a bad game is just being harsh, yeah the first japanese impressions were bad, but after their impressions the game reception improved, and aside the thing about what happened with the original members that I won't say because spoilers, but we can agree that is awfully written, and the combat music is forgettable, and the combat scenarios don't have any variety, aside that all I don't think this game is bad, I like the new girls, the action combat was a great decision (with progress would be perfect, because getting new techniques, combos, more energy, etc) I like action combat, so I don't think I could be blamed for it, the exploration music is good, the game humor is great, this soft reboot has great ideas, I would like a sequel with my issues fixed, but as Sega is now doing try and error with ST, I don't think I'll see that very soon, very nice retrospective I must say I have some nitpicks for example the thing about the movie, I don't think they should skip it, because it explain why the original Hoshigumi split themselves, introduced Ratchet (that originally would be appear in ST 4, but as I said before what happened with 4, then she appeared on 5 instead) the thing is it has some extra content for anybody who played the 3 games, for that reason is worth watching, still isn't necesary to play 4, maybe for 5 to understand better to Ratchet. Anyway great retrospective for a great franchise.
the Yakuza kiwami remakes bad? wth? I mean yeah there are some aspects that I prefer in the original PS2 games, like soundtrack for example, and the thing that Kiwami 1 and 2 are reusing Zero and 6 engine aesthetics, but I wouldn't call them bad, aside that two nitpicks in gameplay I prefer the combat of both Kiwami than the PS2 originals sorry, well next comment will be about this video itself.
I probably should've phrased it better in the video itself. I feel like they're bad as remakes, as a remakes job should be to be a modern replacement of an older work. The Kiwami games cut a lot of corners in places where they really shouldn't have. If you ask me playing the originals is the only real way to get the full experience. I do like a lot of aspects in the Kiwami games, and Kiwami 1 in particular is a very solid reimagening that makes it play like an actual video game now instead of a clunky tank that takes 4 playthroughs to get good. Kiwami 2 on the other hand felt very rushed and needed a lot more polish. Thankfully Judgement is there and is exactly that. A polished dragon engine game. If you like those games however then that's great. I just kind of wish they'd have gotten the same amount of polish as the other games

Starting a Sakura Wars video with An Outlaw's Lullaby in the background is incredibly fitting for some reason lol. I think the most insulting part of Shin Sakura Wars was how the original 3 casts were simply discarded without any fanfare or anything. At least one scene with the original cast sacrificing themselves would be better. I did enjoy my time with SST tho. The exploration and interactions with the cast were good and the modernization of these sections were well implemented. The combat did suck.
My biggest gripes with it are how it tries to really sell you on the romance aspect of the game and also very heavily pushes you towards Amamiya, not to mention the fact that the sacrifice of the old cast members completely contradicts one of the biggest themes of the original saga.

I honestly find it really funny how a lot of people get hung up on that instead of the video itself. In the end I just dropped that and moved on. Idk why people feel the need to make a big deal out of it sometines. I prefer the originals by a lot but if you like the Kiwamis then more power to you. As someone that's played both regular and dating sim games disguised as RPGs for about 20 years I dont really see how the most recent one is specifically designed for otakus... yeah it's got some of the typical pandering in some of the dialogue but what can u expect from a game made to get western players back into the series? ("Back into" assuming they are making more in the future for ps5/etc)
I was mostly trying to make a joke there because the game is filled to the brim with anime clichè's (childhood friend, shy one who never opens up to anyone but the protagonist, etc) whereas the older games were geniunly unique and interesting

While you aren't wrong, there are plenty of RPGs that don't have such tropes and stand out a lot more thanks to that. Of course everyone has their prefferences, I just wish the games' characters weren't so one-note and annoying.
@@TheKHC That's not entirely true. Dreamcast versions had MUCH better resolution full screen art assets and better quality cut scenes. It's basically what we now call "HD remaster" for it's time.
Maybe it's for the best to just let the series rest, especially when you consider how bad Sakura Revolution (the mobole game) was. Even for mobile gams Standards such low framerates are unacceptable.
It was bad. As a newcomer to the series I can see it as being fine at best but if you've stuck around for the older games it's really just insulting. It takes everything that makes these games special and just throws it into the woodchipper. The only emotion I felt during my entire playthrough was "I wish the series had remained dead"
Sakura wars 2019 was so close too. The biggest issue was ANYTHING to do with combat, and the other problem that it had SO little focus being like ten percent of the game! No idea what was going on there. The overall game to me was like a solid 7/10 but could so easily be higher.
Nah I think the issues go way deeper. The characters are boring and unlikeable, the story utter nonsense, the aesthetic an inconsistent disaster of too many guest artists and too much focus on romance as opposed to team building. It's a Persona game in all but name, and I happen to really hate persona.
@@TheKHCh definitely the story is terrible I’ll agree there, that said i did enjoy the characters themselves. They are certainly tropey but quite likable nonetheless. The best thing though overall was the character art style by tite kubo and after that the music.
Well I really dislike Bleach so Kubo's art did nothing for me but having 200 billion guest artists did the game no favors. Not to mention, the characters aren't just tropey, they're flat. They never develop, whereas the characters from the older games gradually changed and grew into better people as the series goes on

Ironically what you are saying regarding guest character artists is EXACTLY what happened with xenoblade 2! They had only 40 team members to make the game so outsourcing was necessary and the characters were disjointed as hell. And on the characters being flat or just tropey, i enjoyed them at least, but you do seem to have a bit of a prediliction against anime so that could color perceptions. Either way i like the discussion and will continue watching the video!

I've been searching eBay and found SW5 at a decent price on Wii. PetRock said you insisted that the PS2 port is superior, but I don't have anything to play that on. Is it worth my time, or will the utter weebishness embarrass me into playing it once, being seen by my family, never playing it again, and hiding my face in shame for the rest of my life? I really need something good to play.
Well I definitely do NOT recommend it as your first game in the series if you have the option to play 1 over it (which thanks to the fan translation you definitely do). Frankly what's going to kill you first is the fact that the wii Version doesnt have the ps2's in-house translation and instead only has the atrocious Ideafactory localisation which has great features like: -a horrible dub where everyone has an extremely thick fake accent -a shitton of glitches and bugs -dialogue that feels like it was written by a redditor -Johnny Yong Bosch voicing the protagonist

@@100Servings This game series is 90% Social Sim with simple turn based strategy gameplay between chapters, for break weariness in reading between chapters (SW 1 & 2 have simplified Fire Emblem gameplay, SW3 - 5 and PS2 Remake have prototype Valkyria Chronicles battle system). Those kind of games you play mainly for interactions with characters and their backstories, not for gameplay. There is no leveling up, grind, customization, crafting typical for RPG games. It's like fusion Tokimeki Memorial with Fire Emblem / Valkyria Chronicles (without RPG elements). It's like: 2h reading > 15-30 min gameplay > 2h reading > 15-30 min gameplay > 2h reading > 15-30 min gameplay ...
@@nr2676 Thousand Arms was kind of like that. For the longest time it was the closest we had to a dating sim on the PS1. The combat was almost an afterthought. You did remind me to go back to Valkyria Chronicles. I was doing a replay of 1 and 4, then got sidetracked. Wish I still had a way to play 2. I put a ton of time into that game back in the day. In the video I said I was ignoring it and its anime. This is due to them being part of a completely new saga, whereas I wished to focus on the original saga and all of its material.
@@TheKHC Shin is not bad game, but game plot is very predictable, last boss is fucking bad compared to Aoi Satan, Nobunaga or even Kyogoku and game fells more like generic shonen than romanse. Combat is very basic musou (musou with only 5 characters and only 10 minutes gameplay between chapters?), they should add Valkyria Chronicles BlitZ combat system or ARMS from previous SW games with difficulty settings.
There's a lot that they'd need to change. Just an unruly amount. From the poor writing of everyone but the new Sakura, to the absolutely horrible artstyle clash in the character models to the lack of teamwork in gameplay and the fact that they made the old casts sacrifice themselves when all previous games were about how that should never be an option. It's a game alright but that's about the nicest thing I can say about it without grasping for straws
@@TheKHC Its true but remember this game was made for new players, not FOR OLD FANS. And the game propably had lowest budget of all main Sakura Wars games. Propably the best idea should be firstly cheap remasters and localziation old games for all platforms, not only PS4 (dead platform in Japan). Unfortunately they didn't get too many new fans in West, because SEGA had a great idea to release this game with FF VII Remake or Persona 5 Royal. And propably lost many old fans in Japan, Revolution failure it only made matters worse.

If u played all games in series, this game is one of worst games in series - definitely the worst game in series is Sakura Wars 5 Episode 0, this game is a disaster, and one of reasons why this series fallen. If u are new player in genre / never played older games u propably will like SSW. The best for me is Sakura Wars 3, because this game have the: best cast, best story (especially Hanabi backstory), old cast returns in one episode and that was awesome, the most content, the best minigames, the best graphic / music (this depends on taste), and fairly good battle system with good map variatery (Bastille, Notre Dame, Tryumphal Arch), the best writing and jokes. Nearly everything in this game is great, except maybe non existent difficulty, but all of VN games are very easy. The second my fav. is Sakura Wars 1 Remake on PS2, because it fix few big problems with original (add Kohran episode, and many good QoL changes) and new CG in this game looks gorgeus. Shin Sakura Wars is good as rebot game, but fails as Sakura Wars ,,sequel'', and this game feels to ,,modern'' for me (example Koubu design in SSW doesnt fit Taisho era). And that musou combat is ... copy paste from Sakura Wars V Episode 0, and that was the worst thing about that game.

Still this game is not that bad, could be a lot worse and end like Sakura Wars Episode 0 2.0 version. If Team Sonic fix bigger problems of SSW in potential sequel (very unlikely, because this game sold like shit in West), and add more complex gameplay (return of minigames) or just copy paste ARMS/BlitZ from Sakura Wars 3-5/Valkyria Chronicles i think it game will be that good as In Hot Blood PS2 Remake. And yeah u have right, the most people who liked PS4 game are Persona 3-5 / ,,modern'' Fire Emblem / Trials of Cold Steel fans (mega casuals), not typical Visual Novel / Mecha Anime fan. The best thing in SSW is definitely minigame - Koi Koi Wars, sure AI cheats as hell in this card game, but this was way more funny than musou sections in game LOL.

Is there any difference in Saturn and Dreamcast version for 1 and 2 ?
The dreamcast versions let you carry over your save files all the way to SW4. That's about the only major difference

It was bad. As a newcomer to the series I can see it as being fine at best but if you've stuck around for the older games it's really just insulting. It takes everything that makes these games special and just throws it into the woodchipper. The only emotion I felt during my entire playthrough was "I wish the series had remained dead"

Sakura wars 2019 was so close too. The biggest issue was ANYTHING to do with combat, and the other problem that it had SO little focus being like ten percent of the game! No idea what was going on there. The overall game to me was like a solid 7/10 but could so easily be higher.
Nah I think the issues go way deeper. The characters are boring and unlikeable, the story utter nonsense, the aesthetic an inconsistent disaster of too many guest artists and too much focus on romance as opposed to team building. It's a Persona game in all but name, and I happen to really hate persona.
@@TheKHCh definitely the story is terrible I’ll agree there, that said i did enjoy the characters themselves. They are certainly tropey but quite likable nonetheless. The best thing though overall was the character art style by tite kubo and after that the music.
Well I really dislike Bleach so Kubo's art did nothing for me but having 200 billion guest artists did the game no favors. Not to mention, the characters aren't just tropey, they're flat. They never develop, whereas the characters from the older games gradually changed and grew into better people as the series goes on
@@TheKHCeah…can’t agree on bleach at all, terrible filler but overall fantastic anime/manga. How many guest character artists were on it other than him? I thought he was the sole concept artist. Ironically what you are saying regarding guest character artists is EXACTLY what happened with xenoblade 2! They had only 40 team members to make the game so outsourcing was necessary and the characters were disjointed as hell. And on the characters being flat or just tropey, i enjoyed them at least, but you do seem to have a bit of a prediliction against anime so that could color perceptions. Either way i like the discussion and will continue watching the video!

I'm in need of a strategy RPG after beating Mechanicus for the 30th time. I've been searching eBay and found SW5 at a decent price on Wii. PetRock said you insisted that the PS2 port is superior, but I don't have anything to play that on. Is it worth my time, or will the utter weebishness embarrass me into playing it once, being seen by my family, never playing it again, and hiding my face in shame for the rest of my life? I really need something good to play.
Well I definitely do NOT recommend it as your first game in the series if you have the option to play 1 over it (which thanks to the fan translation you definitely do). Frankly what's going to kill you first is the fact that the wii Version doesnt have the ps2's in-house translation and instead only has the atrocious Ideafactory localisation which has great features like:
-a horrible dub where everyone has an extremely thick fake accent
-a shitton of glitches and bugs
-dialogue that feels like it was written by a redditor
-Johnny Yong Bosch voicing the protagonist

I also noticed your videos show almost nothing of the combat in the games, which isn't a good sign. I've been married 20 years, so the last thing I need is a dating simulator. The closest I came to that was Thousand Arms, which is actually a pretty good game.
I guess I could play Gladius or a Fire Emblem game. Just need something turn based to calm my nerves. Not sleeping well.

@@100Servings This game series is 90% Social Sim with simple turn based strategy gameplay between chapters, for break weariness in reading between chapters (SW 1 & 2 have simplified Fire Emblem gameplay, SW3 - 5 and PS2 Remake have prototype Valkyria Chronicles battle system). Those kind of games you play mainly for interactions with characters and their backstories, not for gameplay. There is no leveling up, grind, customization, crafting typical for RPG games. It's like fusion Tokimeki Memorial with Fire Emblem / Valkyria Chronicles (without RPG elements).
It's like: 2h reading > 15-30 min gameplay > 2h reading > 15-30 min gameplay > 2h reading > 15-30 min gameplay ...
@@nr2676 Thousand Arms was kind of like that. For the longest time it was the closest we had to a dating sim on the PS1. The combat was almost an afterthought.
You did remind me to go back to Valkyria Chronicles. I was doing a replay of 1 and 4, then got sidetracked. Wish I still had a way to play 2. I put a ton of time into that game back in the day. Thanks for the tip!

In the video I said I was ignoring it and its anime. This is due to them being part of a completely new saga, whereas I wished to focus on the original saga and all of its material.

@@TheKHC Shin is not bad game, but game plot is very predictable, last boss is fucking bad compared to Aoi Satan, Nobunaga or even Kyogoku and game fells more like generic shonen than romanse. Combat is very basic musou (musou with only 5 characters and only 10 minutes gameplay between chapters?), they should add Valkyria Chronicles BlitZ combat system or ARMS from previous SW games with difficulty settings.
There's a lot that they'd need to change. Just an unruly amount. From the poor writing of everyone but the new Sakura, to the absolutely horrible artstyle clash in the character models to the lack of teamwork in gameplay and the fact that they made the old casts sacrifice themselves when all previous games were about how that should never be an option. It's a game alright but that's about the nicest thing I can say about it without grasping for straws
@@TheKHC Its true but remember this game was made for new players, not FOR OLD FANS. And the game propably had lowest budget of all main Sakura Wars games. Propably the best idea should be firstly cheap remasters and localziation old games for all platforms, not only PS4 (dead platform in Japan). Unfortunately they didn't get too many new fans in West, because SEGA had a great idea to release this game with FF VII Remake or Persona 5 Royal. And propably lost many old fans in Japan, Revolution failure it only made matters worse.
To be fair it's not like Revolution was any good so nothing of value was lost

If u played all games in series, this game is one of worst games in series - definitely the worst game in series is Sakura Wars 5 Episode 0, this game is a disaster, and one of reasons why this series fallen. If u are new player in genre / never played older games u propably will like SSW.
The best for me is Sakura Wars 3, because this game have the: best cast, best story (especially Hanabi backstory), old cast returns in one episode and that was awesome, the most content, the best minigames, the best graphic / music (this depends on taste), and fairly good battle system with good map variatery (Bastille, Notre Dame, Tryumphal Arch), the best writing and jokes. Nearly everything in this game is great, except maybe non existent difficulty, but all of VN games are very easy. The second my fav. is Sakura Wars 1 Remake on PS2, because it fix few big problems with original (add Kohran episode, and many good QoL changes) and new CG in this game looks gorgeus. Shin Sakura Wars is good as rebot game, but fails as Sakura Wars ,,sequel'', and this game feels to ,,modern'' for me (example Koubu design in SSW doesnt fit Taisho era). And that musou combat is ... copy paste from Sakura Wars V Episode 0, and that was the worst thing about that game.
SSW is only good if you're a persona fan. Also yeah Ep 0 is the worst from a purely objective standpoint. That game is such a mess lol
@@TheKHC Eh, im more SMT fan than Persona fan and i liked SSW more than So Long My Love, but yeah this rebot is not the same level as first 4 games on Saturn/Dreamcast. Still this game is not that bad, could be a lot worse and end like Sakura Wars Episode 0 2.0 version. If Team Sonic fix bigger problems of SSW in potential sequel (very unlikely, because this game sold like shit in West), and add more complex gameplay (return of minigames) or just copy paste ARMS/BlitZ from Sakura Wars 3-5/Valkyria Chronicles i think it game will be that good as In Hot Blood PS2 Remake. And yeah u have right, the most people who liked PS4 game are Persona 3-5 / ,,modern'' Fire Emblem / Trials of Cold Steel fans (mega casuals), not typical Visual Novel / Mecha Anime fan. The best thing in SSW is definitely minigame - Koi Koi Wars, sure AI cheats as hell in this card game, but this was way more funny than musou sections in game LOL.
