Back in the 80s when I was working at the Boardwalk I frequently walked past the McCray Hotel and it was very creepy. Years later I heard it inspired the Psycho house. You should cover Vertigo which did some filming in San Juan Bautista about an hour or so away. Great video! Brings back memories.

Thank you! It was much creepier before it got renovated into the Sunshine Villa. But I’m glad the building survives to this day. Yes Vertigo locations will happen. :)

Hey Stanley! Just watched your video on Alfred Hitchcock, and I have to say, you did an incredible job! It was not only informative but also entertaining, diving into the history of such a fascinating figure. By the way, that winery you visited looked amazing! Was it worth the money? Keep up the fantastic work on your channel! 😊

Thank you! I was trying to add a bit of humor to keep it lively. Glad you enjoyed that. The winery Armitage Winery, was very good. Great views. They only grow Pino Noir grapes so, if your not a fan of Pino it won’t be your place; but if you enjoy Pino it is worth the money 👍🏻

Hi Stanley (my Dad's name was Stanley). I worked at Universal Studios in the late 80's and early 90's. Part of what I did was to help with catered events, some of which took place at backlot locations. Long story short, I have a photo of myself knocking on the door of Room 1 at the Bates Motel.

Great video, Stanley! I had no idea there was a connection between Santa Cruz and the Psycho house. Hitchcock certainly had a fondness for the beautiful Northern California setting at least two of his classic films Vertigo and The Birds in and around the San Francisco area.

I Lived in the McCray Hotel 78 & 79 on the 2nd floor & there was a Gazebo attached to my room which I could walk onto from a Door in my room possibly for a band to play for guests in garden party's ?? the Garden & Grounds were below my room . And ..... Hold onto your Hat there were 4 or 5 flat roofed like motel rooms right on the Grounds which makes it even more believable ,, not the rooms across the street . I think I have pictures that show them partially , send your Email & I'll try & get them to you . I also believe there was a painting of a matching house in the mid west maybe by Andrew Wyeth ,, Very Good Presentation Which I can share with my Friends ,, I've been telling them for years that I lived in the Psycho Hotel ..... & they Say that sounds about Right !!

It has been well documented that Hitchcock took inspiration from a painting by Edward Hooper called House By The Railroad. Maybe the hotel gave him an idea to place the house on a hill. They did not fully use existing sets off the backlot for the house. The tower and the right side where taken from the harvey house according to the blueprints from 1959. They matched the left side using stock that matched the harvey house and the porch roof and sides were all constructed for the production which until Invitation To A Gunfight they added another side so it could be used and painted it in a tan color and it sat on Laramie St next to Singapore lake till 1980 when PSYCHO II went into production and they knew it had to be moved since it was impossible to shoot the film when Universal had the house as part of the backlot tour, move to a isolated area of the backlot next to Falls Lake. Which was the swamp location used in 1960.

Hi there, thanks for the comment. Yes Hitchcock was a hopper fan, and I’m sure that painting added to the look of the mansion. I read somewhere that the door came from the Crocker mansion in San Francisco, but I can’t find any old picture of the Crocker house to compare. The only one I found has a different door?
