Hi guys ~ sorry, long response here, but the short response is "not a representative review" at least from the perspective that this lock is not what you should be buying at a PS facility today. That lock was produced for PS well over 6 or 7 years ago. I know because PACLOCK has been producing the disc locks for PS since then... and there are tell tale signs that tell me whether a lock is from pre or post-PACLOCK days. I am 100% certain that lock was not produced by PACLOCK for a couple of reasons. How did you come about this lock? I'm sure PS would want to know if they have really old inventory somewhere that hasn't been cleared out.
With that said, your review, as always, is completely fair and accurate on this lock! It is JUNK!!!! It's why PS came to PACLOCK saying "please help us, we need better for our customers!" I could fill up even more pages talking about what we did to help PS, and I know all of you would truly enjoy the stories. But maybe one day over a beer and in person! For now let me highlight a few things (that will still take up some pages).
There are only two or three factories in China that can make the disc locks. And those two factories do a very poor job of it... and, yes, those factories put all kinds of "manufacturers" names on the disc locks. I don't want to disparage any other manufacturer, but if their disc lock was made in China (check the packaging), then it was likely made at one of those two factories. Watch out.
For the first year and a half PACLOCK worked with those two factories to make drastic improvements to their products. Pulling teeth doesn't even come close to trying to explain what we went through. But we did what we could and did make significant improvements to the lock. Biggest problem? Key interchange. Even a 5-pin cylinder, if it's from one of these Chinese factories, would have interchange like mad.
But who knows that? Who sits there with 50 padlocks on a desk and tries each individual key in every single lock. Yup, 2,500 different key insertions. PACLOCK did it over and over again (it takes 4 hours each time you do it). Careful of the quality associated with some of the manufacturers mentioned in some of the users' comments below... I can tell you for a fact that even those well known manufacturers have a not-more-than-one-in-20 key interchange standard! Sounds absurd right? 5-pin cylinders should have lots of key changes!!! Not if your quality is far less than acceptable... 2 pins in a cylinder, you betcha! Terrible tolerances on the pins themselves? You betcha! Terrible cutting tolerances on the steel keys, you betcha! On and on. So saying they have 5-pins is truly an illusion of security (as proven by LPL in this video!).
What PACLOCK did with those 2 factories is pound them into improving manufacturing to the point where we could get no key interchange in 1 in 500 locks! It was a monumental feet and they complained, but made it happen. Cost us more. Then we forced them to do 6 different keyways with those same 500 numbers! And we forced them to start at key #1 and go to key #500! Yes, painful!!! But by doing that, we go PS no key interchange on an entire pallet of 3,000 padlocks!!! That was huge back then, never before done. This was 2012 into 2013. Lots of work was done with the functionality of the locks also, but we had less success there. Still, PS was very happy with the disc locks we started supplying.
But PACLOCK wasn't done yet! While we were working with those other established factories to try and get them to change (improve), we were working to establish a new factory to specifically make a drastically improved version of the disc lock... what we call the "PRO" version. What makes it "PRO"?
    - First ever 6-pin cylinder (and for real, all 6 pins all the time!)
    - Modified pins to allow for a single bit changeout... which then bumped us up to more than 20,000 unique (and useable) key numbers!!!
    - We were able to incorporate our pick and bump resistance technology into the cylinders
    - Nickel silver keys (stronger than regular brass)
    - The two outer clams made on progressive die stamp machines for superior tolerance control (this is huge because it affects the functionality of the lock). A typical China factory will use 10 or 12 different press machines to form the outer shells... a progressive die machine is huge and performs all of those functions on a single die and feeding the material in as it goes (progressively).
    - Ultrasonic cleaning of the lock after it gets sanded and buffed. Ever get a disc lock that is either dripping in grease/oil or is full of debris? That's because a typical factory doesn't want to spend the time or money to ultrasonic clean their locks so they spray in a bunch of oil and try to air blast as much out as they can... doesn't work well. Our PRO locks will never have dripping oil or tons of debris in them.
    - 100% welded seam on the outside and even under the shackle. Doing under the shackle takes a CNC controlled laser welder that is expensive to buy and hard to setup. We did it for PS.
There's probably more, but I've that's what's off the top of my head. We started producing these versions of the disc lock for PS back in 2014 and, I'd suspect, that's all PS should have in their system at this point. How do you know if it's a "PRO"? Lots of signs.
First, the lock literally says "Disc Lock PRO" on it. Second, no PS logos at all anywhere. Why? Let's just call it blackmail out of China with PS's logo and we all decided to not pay the ransom... so no logos it is! Third, every PACLOCK produced disc lock (even from the "other" factories) has a manufacturing date/code stamped on the back of it.
The code serves a bunch of purposes. Keep in mind that while we produce these locks in China (too much welding/buffing/sanding to do it in USA, no one would pay the price), PACLOCK does quality inspections on every single batch that comes in from our factory. And we are thorough. So we track any quality issues batch to batch and constantly work with our factory to insure quality stays where we want it. I don't know of any other padlock "manufacturer" that does this extra step of quality assurance in the USA.
So, with all of that said, I'd ask for LPL to go to your local PS and grab a disc lock and give this a whole re-do test! BosnianBill did about a 20 minute review of our "PRO" locks when we first came out with them... wouldn't mind having a second set of eyes/picks check up on us again years later!!! Obviously PACLOCK would be more than happy to send you some test locks (like we did for BosnianBill back then), but we don't want it to seem like we would cherry pick! Back with BosnianBill, we didn't have a choice because the locks weren't yet in stores. Today, they should be everywhere!
Apologies for the long write up, but hopefully it gives you all a taste of the sort of attention to detail and overcoming-obstacles PACLOCK will go through to get an important customer truly good quality products! Plus, I'm a fast typer!!!

A lock manufacturer who pays attention to the locksport channels on youtube (and probably similar stuff elsewhere). Impressive. It means you actually care about making a good product rather than selling garbage.
Sadly, what is all too likely to happen is that you get bought out by one of the big boys. Supposedly to improve their range, but really to suppress the competition and make a brief killing as they bring your product down to their shoddy standards and sell on reputation. But maybe I'm overly cynical and you'll continue to produce good locks for a long time to come.

U-Haul worker here! We at U-Haul, require storage units to have these disk locks. However, with how many security cameras U-Haul has for their self storage, it makes up for the security of the locks. We design our hasps to where it makes it more difficult to get in with bolt cutters or an angle grinder to get these disk locks open without damaging the hasp of the storage unit or leaving evidence behind that someone broke into the unit. U-Haul has never had an incident where someone broke into someone's storage unit, from what I've heard.

Does really security matter on these locks? For example, Public storage facilitys in sweden are well guarded with cameras and access cards, and I guess its the same where you live. So if someone picks or rakes these locks, it will be visible on camera and also it will be visible in the logs which access card which opened the gate or the front door (depending on if you have a outside reach-with-car unit, then its a motorised gate you have to open with access card, or a inside human-access-only unit, which are accessed by a front door that requires a access card scan), so the culprit could be traced down and prosecuted.

    • @LatitudeSky
      @LatitudeSky 5 років тому

It's the same where I have storage. But Even if you can show X person entered the building, you can't prove they were the ones who stole anything and hid it away in their unit. They don't have cameras down every hallway. And there is often nobody else around to see anything happening. Someone could easily go in and help themselves to many units. In any case, weak locks like these are an issue. But the are also attached to very cheap hasps. If you don't care about leaving traces, a prybar will get into most storage units in a few moments.

    • @sebastiannielsen
      @sebastiannielsen 5 років тому

@@LatitudeSky You could. For example if the real owner to storage unit X tells items have disappeared, you check the logs where the owner of unit X and next time owner of unit X entered. You now have a list of suspects. To prevent fake reports, also write down the owner of the storage unit X as a suspect on "his" list. Next time Another storage unit owner Y claims items missing, you do the same for him. After that, you will have a bunch of lists of suspects. When you have, lets say about 6 such lists, pick 3 at ranom and tick off everyone not present on all 3 lists. If everyone is ticked off, you need to choose Another 3 lists instead. After doing this, you will land on one single person that isn't ticked, the common denominatior. If there is more than one person non-ticked, check against more lists until you land on one single person. Now cross-check the denominator against all lists, and you will see he is on most lists but not all (because it might exist fake reports from certain residents and it may also exist resident that just misplaced items without losing them).
There you have it, a thief catched.

I was thinking the same thing, but I believe the level of security is relative to how important the items you are storing are in this case. If you're storing valuables, then you'll want a pretty good lock despite there being on-site physical security. If you're storing less-than-valuable items or stuff that's insured, then yeah, you can rely only on the on-site security and go with this shitty lock.

Cost me $150 for him to make a whole in the lock. I think uhaul and pop lock got some deal going on to rip there customers off.

When you use “top of the keyway tension” about how deep can you place your tensioner before hitting the first pin? Also why specifically would you use this method in this case?
I cannot seem to get enough grip on the tensioner or depth, in order to put the pressure required to turn the cylinder. I’ve been trying this UHAUL lock for well over 6 months off and on. It will not yield to my attack. Love this channel!

Public Storage forces customers to buy this lock, from them. I caught a manager using a lock pick kit on the unit next to mine once. I asked her why she was doing it and she said because the customer failed to pay his bill the day before and didn't pay that day and if he didn't pay the next day they would replace the lock with one of theirs. I'm a retired policeman and reminded her that possession of lock pick kits was illegal in this state unless she was a licensed locksmith. Managers are trained to pick locks, then help themselves to your property. As I found out later when I discovered my Vacuum cleaner and 2 boxes were missing.

that was east to do because the lock could be positioned wherever was most comfortable/easy to get at. If the lock was actually on the metal door at the storage facility that would be would be truly challenging. The lock couldn't be turned and held in the left hand upside down like shown in the video.

The disc lock that was on my life storage unit has a tighter tolerance and is slightly offset where the pins go. I've been trying to pick it open since my unit is closed as I no longer needed it... I've been unable to pick, rake, or jiggle it open. None of my Southord picks are small enough to fit straight in the gap where the pins are. Never gotten a single pin to stick.

Yeah I'm having no success with my Uhaul version. I'm starting to suspect that this channel deceptively selects easy to pick locks (or locks that he studied intently) to make it look easy in advance of him opening his lockpick supply website. The site opened a couple of weeks ago and literally everything on the site is sold out. There are going to be a lot of people that are disappointed when their picks and tools arrive and they aren't able to replicate LPL's magical picking ability on any lock they pick up.

Anyone that's an "Authorized User" in public storage get's locked out if the owner dies, they double lock the unit. IF you have the key and access code you can come and go and take anything as authorized user. IF you need the lock cut, then they say the stuff is the deceased heirs not the authorized user's unless they put it that way in addendum to have joint ownership of the property. So you can't leave stuff even to your heirs without sending them the key or they get held up to have will or probate authorization and death certificate which authorized user can't do a thing to obtain a death certificate, that goes to only family members. The authorized user can do anything they want to except if they lose the key.

P.S, because Managers and auction leaders have to get into the unit if your unit goes up for auction, we must be able to drill out the core. So drilling attacks aren't all that impossible.

Hello, I just found your channel when I did a Google search regarding the round lock. Maybe you can help me or provide advice? I was recently contacted by my storage unit and told the maintenance man noticed my lock was missing. I have been with this company for over eight years and at this particular unit for about seven years (I needed a bigger unit and moved from a smaller unit to this one around 2016). This is the first time my lock has been missing. I visited my unit in May (it's out of state, and I live in California) to look for some old Pokemon cards and a few other keepsakes. Unfortunately, the unit was messy and disorganized, and I found it difficult to find what I was looking for. After looking for three days, off and on, my daughter and I grabbed a small box of items we wanted, including my old high school yearbook and her old PS2. Many items were left. We took pictures of the unit the way it was before we left. I closed the metal door of the unit and locked it, according to my memory. My lock was round like the one in your video, and I believe when I inserted the key, it stayed until the lock was closed, and the key would release and come out. I'm going to request CCTV from the company and an investigation, but I'm not sure if they'll honor my request. I intend to file a police report, but I don't know how other than to fly to the East Coast and do it in person. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me. I hope I'm not making a fool of myself and that it isn't user error, but I'm sure I closed the lock before I flew back home. Also, that was in May of this year, and if the maintenance man just noticed it on Friday, October 27th, I'm not sure how long the lock was missing. Please help.

Comment and Question if I may.
U-Haul demands in their storage contract a disc lock must be used. Which is not the best security option, but I can deal with that by also installing a better lock on a second latch hole. U-Haul continues to harass me about removing the second lock or be charged for its removal.
I show them their contract where it says Uhaul isn't responsible if the storage unit is broken into, and therefore I must be. I am just being responsible for my storage unit by securing better.
Is that a fair argument for my problem?
    Great content thank you!

Does LPL Have any videos on how the raking attack works? This is the only key lock I have around to play with my new Covert companion, and I wanted to get a feel for raking a lock, but I'm having no luck on this very lock.
I single pin picket it 3-4 times, but I don't have the feel for raking yet.
I'm making sure to orient the 2 rakes included with "sharp" pints towards the key pins, and I've tried starting "low" and moving toward the key pins with a raking motion of about 1/2", but no luck.

MrMogulMoney the ones I’ve picked I used heavy tension and I overlift the pins - let up on tension - get a false set and counter rotation - then use lifter pick to raise the pin that sticks. Of course the one in this video had no security pins. But picking by overlifting may still be effective.
