  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is probably the most widely used analytical technique in the pharmaceutical and life sciences after HPLC. But why? And what is it? How does it work? How should you design a DSC expeiment to maximise the information you get from it? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this 10-part series, all devoted to getting you to understand, use and interpret DSC properly!
    Part 2 of the series here; • Demystifying Heat-Flux...
    If you want to delve deeper into the design considerations of DSC, there are several excellent reference sources you might look at. I would recommend;
    Principles of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (RSC publishing) - Chapter 5

    Hello. I have a question. I want to test incompatibility between active pharmaceutical ingredient and excipient in liquid formulation. But, what should i prepare for DSC? In liquid form or before they’re mixed in solution? Could you tell me why? Thank u. Hope you read and answer my question.

      Sorry for the late reply - that's a tricky sample. DSC is not good for studying solutions (unless you have a specialised DSC) because the amount of sample in a solution is very small. I would recommend mixing the solids together and looking at them by DSC but you may need HPLC analysis for any interaction in solution
