Just sold mine with 200,000 miles after 15 years of trouble free driving, rarely serviced and still on the original clutch, it just kept going. The most reliable work horse I ever had.

I did mine about 5 years ago, about £800 including water pump, thermostat, fuel filter and all the usual service parts. Shop around.
      Bullet proof motors.
I wish I had bought another, late model one. I replaced it with a mini that I have since spent 4K putting right

David | Geez, that’s expensive as hell. Are those prices normal? I had mine replaced with water pump and rollers. For 500 euros. Pounds is even more expensive (as £800 is €930,-).

Jens thinking back it might have been an MOT as well, so brakes may be and a tyre or two, ARB bushes. Long time ago . Over 15 years of ownership the only problems I had (not including perishable items) were Injector loom which is inside the rocker cover, ABS sensor which I just ignored...

Hi I spent a large part of my career working in Audi dealerships, the A2 was miles ahead of its time. Unfortunately the high manufacturing costs meant it was always deemed as expensive. Two years ago I bought a 1.4 Tdi just past another mOT zero defects. Only £30 for one years RFL. In fact I would buy a one owner minted version but they are like hens teeth. Just make sure whatever engine you opt for a full maintenance program has been followed.

I bought my ex-demonstrator from Audi with 10,000 miles on the clock and still own it 16 years and 211,000 miles later. Original engine, clutch and gearbox still returning over 50 mpg day after day. Is there a better car? I'd one of these as my day to day for about 6 or 7 years and it started cutting out all the time with some mysterious electrics issue that no mechanic could seem to get to the bottom of.
It was a shame because the miles per gallon was better than any car I've had since. I was kind of broke at the time and the amount of times I got home from longer and longer distances with the petrol indicator on empty was fairly daft. I'd a pine green model with beige interior which I hadn't seen much at that point.

Rumour has it that Audi dropped the A2 because they lost money on each one due to the construction.
My wife has one (2002 1.4 petrol on 170,000 miles) and they do have their own issues. Door straps, cup holders breaking, dry joints in the door lock mechanisms, earth point issues but these are all easily sorted yourself. Yes the A pillar restricts vision slightly but you get used to it. It drives really well and has plenty of room for 4 adults of any size. Remove the rear seats and the false boot floor (5 minutes or less) and you have van like space in the rear.
The design may not be to everyone's taste but I think they look great and has stood the test of time.
It's a future classic that's cheap to run and doesn't rust.

I've owned a 1.4 petrol SE for 18 years, and last year bought a 1.6 FSI. I didn't sell the 1.4 petrol though, as I knew I couldn't part with it while it remains reliable. The 1.6 FSI is very pokey, but problems with owners not using the high octane petrol can lead to some issues with 'sticky flaps' in the FSI engine. All that said, there's a stalwart community of folks who love these cars and still find them modern to own, to drive and to admire from afar.

I have an A2 1.6 fsi with 100k on the clock and it does occasionally rattle like a diesel for a couple of seconds on start up, probably every 5th start, the general consensus seems to be its normal for this engine, I've been told its caused by different things by different people, the mechanical high pressure fuel pump building pressure, hydraulic tappets ect. But according to audi and people who have had them since new its normal and nothing to worry about.

I bought a 2004 A2 1.4 petrol S-line in 2012 and still drive it. It's done 235.000 now. It's got cruise control, climate control, half leather S-line sports seats and a Concert radio with added Xcarlink USB aux input. I do not recognize the bad handling at all. I can , although slightly understeered, really throw it around like a kart. The engine is the bottleneck, not the car. Mine has got a slightly lowered original S-line suspension, accompanied by a set of 16" Golf 4 BBS wheels with 195/45 rubber (Vredestein Quatrac 5) and I think that's the greatest treat you can give an A2.
Doors are both cracking, it has an exhaust leak somewhere around the first flange and the paint has come partially off most dashboard buttons and switches. Also, the (black) roofliner has come loose in the back. Biggest disappointment is the engine, which just doesn't like it's life a lot. It uses a liter of 5w30 oil each 1500 to 2000 km (sump ventilation?), does not like to rev and just sounds tired, ticking and raw. Fuel consumption is ok, doing around 15 km per liter on average. Besides the regular maintenance, brake pads, wipers and tires, and a one time thermostat (major) coolant leak, it did not let me down. I really like this little, spacious, light, smart car. It's quite reliable for a VAG product, it's quite cheap to have and it does what it needs to. Think it will stay for a while...

Each engine has its own strengths and weaknesses, but when it comes to cars of this age it's just as important to track one down that's been properly maintained. In my case, I knew I wanted petrol, but didn't mind if it was the 1.4 or the 1.6 -I just went with the best car I could find within my budget. It could also be worth test driving a diesel and one of the petrols as they are quite different cars to drive. Thanks, Chris.

Had one for a couple of years but it often needed new parts such as battery, alternator, starter motor, glow plugs, switches, better hi fi etc. Now have a Honda Jazz mk2 ex-t with leather and panoramic roof and it's a far better car than the A2. I do have a soft spot for the looks of the A2 still but its had its day now in my opinion.

Uncle has had 5 Jazz's past decade whilst I've had just the one A2 for 19 years and 1/4 million miles. Jazz pretty noisy, higher fuel consumption, low rent interior and zero diesel options.

I have a jazz..great reliable car but boring! Just bought a Skoda..yes a Skoda! Lol
Has the 1.2 TDI engine.. wonderful car ( once you get used to the tall gearing ) it's fun to drive and surprisingly quick..this is my first VAG vehicle and i am very impressed.. however if you want a car which just works without any problems go for the jazz petrol 1.4 fine car just not a fun car.

So true.. I have one, and my solar roof and rear windows doesnt work. The mirror thermal resistors doesnt work either. Many engine sensors broke several times and the replace cost a lot.... Also, interior buttons are all weared out... Its not a matter of time or mileage. I had a volkswagen golf Mk3 with more than half a million km, and everything was perfect apart from normal usage replacements.... Also, if you go to the internet to find problems of it, you`ll find a lot of users tired of replacing or going nuts with problems with it...
