James this hit me big time, I have suffered from terrible mental health over the years, I started my gym journey 2 years ago after hitting rock bottom, and it's been a battle ever since, this year I also took up running and I'm doing my first half marathon on Sunday, thank you for all your videos and the messages you put out there, it's these kind of videos that help towards my motivation on the path to feeling happy in myself!

  • @boltheadpropertymaintenanc5154

Mate. Totally love this. The link to how we look after our cars etc when we know they’re not quite right - yet we do fuck all about our own mental health. Man. That is so true 👍🏻 Love it.

I recently got into this channel and its now one of my favourites I always learn something, including that lifting weights with your head is a thing - and if you do it you wont shit yourself or end up on a stretcher.

One of you best mate. Couldn’t agree more.
Also just gunna take a moment to thank-you.
I was a fat lazy fuck about 6 months ago. Finally decided to do something about it. Lost 18 kilos now and still going. Still a fat fuck, but a bit less of one.
About 8 kilos in was kitting a bit of a plateau, and saw the video where you said you don’t need to lose 40 kilos, you need to lose 1 kilo 40 times. Dunno why but that just stuck in my head and has been my guiding mantra ever since.
If bad things happen to our weight, our mental health, our lives in general; it isn’t our fault, but it certainly is our responsibility to make it better.
    Thanks again mate,
    Cheers

I feel like I say this to myself every time you upload but this may be your best/most important video yet. You are presenting harsh truths that I think most of us tell ourselves everyday but disregard because it’s too difficult or we’ve “had a rough week so it’s okay to let it slide.” Explaining principles in a way that is empathetic, understanding and just as equally motivating. I can tell you right now, I will be sharing this video with everyone I can. Thanks, James

Funnily enough, I watched your video on how to un F my life. As a chubby guy, I approached a girl on a train expecting her to not take an interest and got her number. I've signed up to the gym. I don't know how to make money or all of these other things, but I do value what you said, I need to make sure what I do everyday, I enjoy. I don't know anything about working out, but this girl.. because she looked past it, I wanna better myself for her as well as myself. Thank you for you free workout videos. I'm also going to look through your channel and look for diet and nutrition information. It's a blessing to have people like you and Chris to literally cipher through your content and learn lessons you guys have spent your entire lives to pretty much learn and document. James is a very intelligent person who I believe, like Chris, knows life very well and how to live it.

It's quite the apt analogy, health as wealth. What, when, how and why you invest into it earns you a return, either negative or positive. And just saving it by avoiding spending it, like with money, will never generate real wealth/health. You have to work on it, put time and energy investing into it. Very wise and thoughtful video James.

Brilliantly said.... I had serious health events two years ago, I was very active but had an underlying health condition. Since then I have allowed food to become my pleasure and entertainment and I have gained back all the weight I had lost and more. I only recently woke up to this and the knowledge that I have a fear of exercise now because I was exercising during the time I fell ill. So each time I go for a walk, I tend to feel off after, I suspect partly due to my health history and partly due to fear. But I will keep going and I will keep trying to improve my health again. I have been bed bound, wheelchair bound and now mental health bound.... I will beat this, now! Because to wait will only ensure my demise.

Every hour of my free time that I use to work on my goals is an hour banked for my mental wealth. When I know I am banking a solid 30-40 hours of my spare time each week towards my goals, I never really feel guilty about the time I give myself to chill out. Very similar to growing financial wealth, it's okay to treat yourself when you hit all your savings and investment goals and bills are paid etc.

Love this style of video, with the calm and eloquent narration. ❤
Things came crashing down for me about five months ago when the relationship I'd built my life around suddenly ended, and I definitely wasn't ready. Took a few months to crawl back out of that pit, but I can confirm that changing your environment is absolutely the most effective way to build yourself back up.
Moved to another country, started eating healthy again, started working out again, started sleeping more (these are all things I'd given up for that relationship) and I'm finally starting to feel a bit like me again. It's insane how big of an impact the 'basics' (or a lack thereof) can have.

Mental health can be an even bigger battle than adjusting circumstances. I quit drink and drugs years ago, not sniffed, smoked or drank booze in well over a thousand days. Go to the gym 3 days a week, run marathons, eat really healthily, write music, see friends, but still have many days where I'm incredibly suicidal. If anything, my mental health can be made to feel worse by the gulf between the work I've done and the state i still feel. It is just an illness in Lots of cases, a really nasty illness. It would feel worse without those things for sure, but doing all these amazing things doesn't guarantee good mental health sadly

One thing that really helped me understand health seeking behaviours and made them easier was to see them as reducing negative affect (making me less unhappy, not more happy). Once I imagined it that way, it made a big difference to me, it helped me see that it's not about chasing some unspecified level of happiness, but about doing the daily work to feel OK most days and great some days (and, yes, shitty some days too, but without worrying about it too much). Thanks for the vid!

Some great points in there James. Especially how normalised being unhealthy has become. If I took a random 100 guys from my nearest high street I reckon I'd be easily in the top 5 for being fit.... And this isn't because I am super fit... It's because everyone else had normalised eating crap, moving less, drinking more and consuming nonsense that keeps them at it.
Pull a salad out when a free lunch is provided, tell people you don't drink, or that you don't watch the news and 'it's just weird'

The most dizzying epiphany I've ever had was a sudden realisation that the power to change all aspects of my life was within me. Up to that point, I'd always been a victim of circumstance. No matter who you are, where you come from, what your story is; If you accept that you are your own best chance at happiness, and actively take steps to set yourself up for success, it is very likely that your life will improve noticeably. Do not be a passenger in your own life.

James, thanks so much for helping me lose a stone over the last few months with simple but effective advice. Do your steps, get your exercise in, and don't be an idiot about what you eat. That literally helped me shift the weight. I know it's not much in a given time period but it was sustainable and realistic which is just what so many others in the fitness industry miss. That there are birthday parties to attend, there are life events/holidays you should enjoy and have guilt free.
It's not ground breaking stuff (as you're always mentioning), but you're honestly a port in the storm for normal everyday people in the s*** show that is the fitness industry. I am also someone who does well with being called out on my bulls*** because I'm Irish and generally that's just how we talk to each other so your approach clicked right away.
Anytime I felt myself flagging or not doing enough to be reminded it's ok to be a normal person who doesn't have to live and die by their diet/lifestyle and can just live but as you said try and always seek for the majority of the time health seeking behaviours.
It honestly didn't even feel like a big change because it was all so subtle. You're doing some great work man, another great video by the way.
