Good video, but after playing this for hours, I really question the statement at the start about it being like Civ IV. Initially it looks like Civ IV, but notice that most of your video showed features rather unlike any Civ. Also, the way that supply limits the distance that your troops can travel. And the three units per tile limitation, which turns out to be a big deal. One of the key bits of strategy here involves the fact that a unit's defense strength falls each successive time it is attacked in a turn -- the 5th attack lowers defense by 90%! But having additional units on the tile spreads the attacks around. But the attacker can attack from other adjacent tiles, so theoretically could attack a stack of 3 with 12 attacks in a giant battle... The other big deal being that cavalry is not strong, but it has a very high probability to retreat, leaving the following infantry attack more likely to succeed. You will not find anything like this in Civ IV.
Also very unlike Civ: the intense interplay among the resources. Your quantity of coal, stone, iron, gold, population, and knowledge will always determine what you can do and how many of things you can build, which, in turn, affects the quantity of other resources. The tough decisions necessary reminds me a bit of Imperialism 2. And unless you play at a low level of difficulty, your enemies are hellbent on taking your resources. Oh, and naval superiority is a very serious matter in the game. And that requires a lot of resources, too.
You mentioned it, but it bears repeating -- the random maps are very adjustable to all kinds of preferences.
I agree the graphics leave something to be desired. I end up using the Top View so it just looks like a game board. And the developer had located a couple bugs that occasionally affect battle outcomes. But these are minor blemishes on the best new game I have seen in quite some time.

As far as the combat mechanics, you might want to read some of the wild outcomes ancient battles had. Sure fire victories turned out to be destructive routes of the anointed winners. The swings of fate are mind blowing at times. This game seems to capture that on a strategic level. You attempt to maximize your potential and then gut a chicken to determine what the entrails tell you... and all that superstitions that had such a massive and random impact.

Thanks for another fine video review, Commissar. I haven't made up my mind about buying the game yet, but this review is quite helpful. I've also noticed comments from others about the lack of transparency concerning the combat factors/results. It seems very odd that in a game about conquest it would be so difficult for a player to decipher what determines a battle's outcome.

It seems that bonuses are multiplied, not added together.

Been trying to play Imperator Rome and just wasn't enjoying it. Became a slog! I really enjoy TW Rome 2 but was looking for a more fleshed out 4x game I could play along side. I haven't played the Empires 4x but this one is looking like a great game. I'm going to give it a go, hopefully it be fun and not as brain hurting as Imperator :)

What are your thoughts on this game, having owned it for a couple years? Should I buy imperator Rome or this one?

The graphics actually aren't that bad and are kinda nosralgic, like Rome 1.
