What’s the queen ant in the title image ? I had one of those queens before but never got a colony of it nor the species name, if you know can you please tell me?
@@bugmansdms4654 likely from bioquip I personally use dressmaker pins, cheap and you get a lot in a container. About 2" long and very thin (I've pinned lasius queens with them)
I have some ants collected and in containers but I haven't gotten around to trying to pin them yet. That is my goal eventually and after seeing your video I think I am finally going to buy some pins and go for it!
dont they mold? also when there is no water the humidity in the air should make it mold in a few months. or did you put them in alcohol or something like that?
Second time watching this video that time with the goal of pinning some ants as i just found a dead worker from my polyrhachis rastellata colony which was in perfect shape i just nee to adjust one leg and the gaster
Vart köper du dina nålar? jag har ganska länge velat nåla mina insekter jag hittar men inte vetat riktigt hur man gör, så den här videon var väldigt hjälpsam ;)
Ants Scandinavia that’s where your mistaken I am fully Scottish also if you ever come to Scotland don’t call us British you might wake up in a hospital or you know 😵😵😵
Honestly, most of my inspiration came from Amazing ants , Safeway ants (which has deleted his channel ): and Ants australia. I also keep a ton of bugs, and some mantids. Plus a lizard and exotic isopod farms :P
If you euthanize the insects using ethyl acetate, they won't be as stiff and brittle as when alcohol is used, and won't have to be softened after (Alcohol is of course practical when travelling, but keep in mind: the purer the alcohol, the stiffer the insect). Most ants will doze off and die after only a few seconds of exposure to ethyl acetate (a drop is enough, it's the fumes that do it). You can then mount them nicely without having to struggle nearly as much with the needles. (Never use ethyl acetate on big insects like large beetles or bumblebees, as they can sometimes survive the treatment and wake up after a few hours!) Since their thoraxes are so brittle, ants aren't typically pinned, but are rather 'pointed' on small cardstock triangles, or are simply mounted to cardstock with entomology glue. For alates, I recommend the latter, as this can be done to beautiful effect! There's a very good glue you can buy from bioform.de. For a proper collection, it is wise to have several workers (as one worker is often not enough for reliable species identification). I can't be bothered to mount each one, so I either point them or simply keep the extras in a glass with alcohol (alcohol will stiffen them up, so mount them right away if you're planning on mounting them at all).
The Formica rufa group for example is very difficult group to tell apart, there are about seven species in that complex which are near indistinguishable from one another. The way F. aquilonia and F. polyctena can be told apart in Nationalnyckeln's identification key is that workers of F. polyctena have "max seven hairs in the back of the head". Needless to say, strong magnification is needed, and to make matters worse: Depending on the population, they hybridise like crazy (e.g. in southern Finland), so you get all these intermediary traits... I would say you should aim to ID at least 10 workers for a somewhat trustworthy result.

Tip: for small insects, cut a small triangle out of card paper, pin the wide end and glue the ant to the thin end of the triangle
You don’t know how long I’ve been looking for this
Awesome, glad I can help :D
Thank you for making this kind of video! Will be sure to check back if/when I get some pins for my other ants that I have collected.
Awesome, seems like a ton of people wanted to know how to do it! :D Glad to help!
Yes! I have been looking for a tutorial on this topic!
Awesome, glad I could help :D
Nice collection, bro. It's time to make my own collection.
Thanks! Glad that I inspired you!
Wow i just pinned them and always wondered how to spread the legs without braking them 😅
Yea, I did the same as you can see XD
Have you to spray them or cover them in a latex or
lacquer?
Nice vid! A pretty nice tutorial when making an insect museum.
Yea, This collection will grow :P

Nice one I just smack my dead ants onto a thumb tack with a blob of resin lmao
Haha, whatever works for you ! :P

Awesome! Glad I could inspire! :D What species is it?
Can i ask how did you legally shipped that beetle? Shipping living beetles legally is pretty hard
From what I understood, importing invertabrates as pets to sweden from an EU country is free, and don't have to be declared to anyone :)
OK, thank you :)
Cool video/ideas
Ye, seems like I helped a lot of people with this! Feels great :D
what is the first species in your intro? i have a colony of them and i don't know the species.

Thank you for this awesome tutorial, I’ll do that with some mantids and stick insects, my ants are better in alcohol where they don’t break
Yea, maybie ants belong in alcohol, you are right. But where do you buy the right containers for them?
Ants Scandinavia I just buy 500 eppendorf tubes
