    I’m doing my best to learn to draw with my non dominant right hand; I survived a stroke that left my left side paralyzed ( I was a lefty for 55 years). Thank you Rob for your videos👍🏻

      You got it. Things I learned is that the top skills are: Consistency and Observation.
      Practice 20 minutes a day on something specific and observe things that you like carefully. Always ask why.

      You can learn to draw at any age. Like others have mentioned, create a pattern in your life where you dedicate to it consistently without distractions and you will see improvements over time.

      37 years old!!! Oh no!! That's too late!! Let's see how much time you have left!! *calculates*
      Your hand stops moving probably around 90 or 100 years old.
      So, you have about 53-63 years left!! And it takes about 3 or 4 years to master a craft if you practice well everyday! You're running out of time!! Hurry up before it's too late!!!

    I know I should be happy and grateful when someone says I'm talented, but honestly I get offended. I know they have no idea how much I have put into things and how much I still hate my work and where I want to be, but it feels like they're trivializing my effort and attributing my battles to non-existence. I don't want to be insufferable, so I don't call them out. There's a difference between aptitude in learning and magically born with it. I couldn't draw a circle or straight line in 2020 (started at 25) and now in 2024 I'm still going at it when no one else thought I would. Don't call it talent, it's effort.

      Man, I feel this so much. Every time I hear this, the response in my head is: "Put a couple thousand hours in and you'll be just as good or better". Talent exists, but skillfulness is a battle still. Ars longa, vita brevis.

    • @RobertMarzullo

      You sound like you are working hard and that is a gift in more ways than one. You are learning to create the art you art inspired to create but also developing your self discipline to achieve your goals. If it was easy then everyone would be an amazing artist. Keep up the great work!

    Ohhh this video really speaks to me. I'm forever telling people that it's a learned skill, and not talent. I'mma be honest, i have no talent for it. I'm entirely logical in my thinking, and creative tasks are very difficult for me. But skill, reference and experience allow me to make art that others consider as creative. Art is a wonderous thing, and anyone can do it with effort

    I see talent as an affinity for something.
    I was told I got talent for sculpting - I sculpted for few years for my own shelf, but after some time, learning I got to a pretty nice spot.
    Without the talent, It would probably took just more time to get there.
    ...and that's it.
    So yeah, totally agree with you Rob.
    In short: Your talent is allowing you to be good at something quicker than a person without that talent.

    I convinced a friend of mine to start drawing in his early 40s because I told him that artistic ability isn’t a "gift." I drew 15 hours a day, every day. That’s why I’m talented. Anyone can learn to draw if they put in the work.

  • @breadpirateoverhere

    Talent is just skill + time, easy to dismiss as something natural if you don't see all the time that goes into it.

    • @luxuriousmindset1906

    I make the mistake i try to finish my drawing in the first seconds i start to draw rough, for example a head and the face. I have not the patience in the moment. I know the skills you have you learned for years and i start my drawing journey in the last few years with breakings. And when i begin and the first circle i draw is like an egg i give up and start the next day again. I think my problem is to having not the patience to concentrate.

    I started drawing a little bit over 2 years ago, at 39 years old. One of the things that I struggle with the most is patience. After all this time, I still feel like I suck. Looking at other people's amazing work seems like an impossible wall to climb. Figuring out how to draw stuff can be frustrating at times.

    I have been studying and practicing drawing for five years with the intention of working with comics. But even after these 5 years my art is far from being acceptable for working with comics. I'm too frustrated and too old to keep trying. I don't know if I should still try this career.

      I have the same intention as you, considering that comics is my desired medium. The problem is that I've been at it for 4 years now, and I still haven't made that progress. Even I question whether or not this career is right for me. Stay strong my fellow creative.

      Maybe draw for yourself before you draw for others. As he said in the video, its a passion thing, and the fastest way to burn out that passion is to draw with the intention that you're only doing it for x reason other than doing it because you love doing it.

    • @RobertMarzullo
      @RobertMarzullo  7 місяців тому +4

      It sounds like you might be comparing your work to others that leads you to only see flaws. Think about the story and art that you could create if you didn't compare yourself to others. For instance, I always wanted to work for Marvel and draw Spider-man. It hasn't happened yet but I didn't wait around for them to see my work and give me a job. I started making things with my art at my current level. As I got better, I got more opportunities.
      There is nothing stopping you from drawing a cool mini comic, self published book, web comic, and so on. Each time you finish a small project you will learn more about what it takes to be successful. Ultimately you will start to sell something and if you keep your eyes and mind open for new opportunities, they will occur.
      Often times we don't see them because we are too rigid in our approach of our goals. We are so singularly focused that nothing else will do. I made a compromise with myself. I would love to be a comic book artist but at the very least I will accept just being a working artist. For the past 8 years I have been a full time artist but not just with comic art. I also teach art, make UA-cam videos, and take some freelance work here and there.
      I am not saying to give up on your specific goal. I am saying be flexible and keep pressing forward. I hope this makes sense and good luck on your art journey!

      @@ammanbansal2265 Just keep doing what you love and you will find what works. I tend to think about the fact that I will be an artist for the rest of my life. If someone pays me then that's great but if they don't, I wouldn't stop drawing. It's just part of who I am and that brings me joy.

  • @luxuriousmindset1906

    Yes anyone can draw doesn't mean everyone is good at or will be as good as others no matter how long you practice

    • @RobertMarzullo
      @RobertMarzullo  6 місяців тому +2

      That's not the point. If you are comparing yourself to others to measure your own success then you are setting yourself up for failure. Art is subjective anyways. Compare yourself to your previous self and create what you are inspired to create.

    been drawing for 8 months and i cant even draw boxes in every angle yet. Sry but talent is very real and if you dont have it. The person with talent will be a pro in 3 to 4 years while's you will be a pro in 10 to maybe 20 years. ps talent is everything you either have it or ya dont.
