Hey everyone! A few additions/corrections: Apparently, Doki Doki Panic started as a tech demo of a vertically scrolling Mario game. So Mario and Doki Doki Panic have an even bigger connection than I mentioned! There's no footage of this prototype to my knowledge, so it's hard to say how different it was compared to Doki Doki Panic. Also, I should've used footage from the original GBA release of Super Mario Advance and not the Nintendo Switch Online version. Thanks for watching! ...And let me know of any other fixes I should make :)
there’s no reason to use GBA footage over NSO. what you did was fine. people saying it needs to be GBA are just being pretentious and have a superiority complex.
Yes but it eventually got a ALL stars SNES game where Super Mario Bros the real SMB 2 (called the lost levels) + the Doki Doki Panic game but the one with Mario) and Super Mario Bros 3 all on 1 SNES cartridge and yes Lost levels/ the real Mario Bros 2 is really BRUTAL that's why the NES game in Japan got replaced by Doki Doki Panic but with Mario Luigi Toad and Peach as party members for the USA NES Super mario bros 2 game.
5:50 For anyone wondering, the "cheat code", hold A when pressing the "NEW GAME" button in the title screen right after you die, and you'll go back to the start of the world ;)
The one thing you don't know about Super Mario Advance is that the footage that you've shown is from Nintendo Switch Online, which gives most GBA games darker, less saturated colors, meant to mimic the GBA's dim screen. If you play it on a PC emulator, GB Player or backlit GBA SP/DS Lite, it'd look much brighter than NSO. NSO is trying to mimic what it would have looked like on the dim GBA screen
Afraid you got some misinformation there. American Super Mario Bros 2, is a reskin of Doki Doki Panic, when this game originally started development, it was a vertical Super Mario Bros (which is why there are so many vertical areas), but they ran into some difficulties and d with the pressure to get a sequel out as soon as possible, they had to shelve this version and work a rom-hack of the original game. That is why the game is so difficult. It was quick and easy. The original game was revived when nippon requested the game for its event.
Also with Lost Levels, what happened there was basically just the Mario team were experimenting with the VS. system (basically an arcade version of Famicom hardware or something) where they had a lot more space to just create a bunch of new levels for Mario 1 that they didn't have space for before, and so they just started having fun making levels for themselves that were much harder than the released game in order to match their own skills (because they were quite good at Mario given they made the game lol). And they found the harder levels they made for themselves fun enough for them to play that they decided "why not release this so other super skilled Mario players can have fun too?" and so they did and that's what Lost Levels basically is. Miyamoto detailed all this in an interview a WHILE back, it's somewhere on Nintendo's website I think. So Lost Levels is basically just a big DLC expansion for "super players" but released as a separate game because, well, DLC wasn't really a thing yet, it wasn't from the start a "Let's make THE sequel to Mario" kind of game or anything. And honestly I'd say the devs weren't wrong, Lost Levels is really fun once you're a super master of Mario 1 (and specifically Mario 1, not later Mario games) in my opinion, after I got really good at Mario 1 overtime I've now grown to love Lost Levels and have a ton of fun with it. It's just that like 95% of Mario players don't fit into that demographic the game is targeting so it ends up seeming way less appealing to most Mario fans.
20 to 30 minutes are perfect. But I wouldn’t just fill it with fluff. I love your style of videos of informative content. Glad I found you through your Sonic content. Mad respect. Your CD Disk art video was great too.
I find it nice how despite initially being a reskin, Super Mario USA was properly integrated into the series On the other hand, what was it with Nintendo making infamous sequels to their games on the NES. You had both Super Mario 2 and Zelda 2, both usually seen as the worst of their respective franchises
it’s just a case of not knowing what direction to go in, and throwing whatever at the wall to see what sticks. it was normal back then, and was kinda expected to change up every game.
You could argue Luigi's taller appearance actually came down from the first Mario movie Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach a movie created to promote SMB2 (AKA The Lost Levels) and gave an update to the designs of the characters in respect to the artwork from SMB1 an update that basically made Bowser and Peach current designs to this day.
It's bizarre how Mario 2 being a Doki Doki Panic reskin was common and overused knowledge but now the idea of Doki Doki panic actually being a prototype for mario is slowly becoming that new common knowledge XD, i remember when i found about that i felt the exact same way i did when i found out about the classic reskin story XD. Also the all-stars version of the lost levels is probably the best in my opinion!
That's cool you mentioned that GTV Japan channel. I've watched a few videos from them before. I don't think I have seen that one you mentioned and I definitely ought to see it because that's really fascinating how at dreamcatcher 87, that's what it was called right, that I mean was like a year before I was even born I was born in 1988 and they had all this cool stuff that you wouldn't expect like controlling actual RC cars with an outrun arcade board that's insane. Although I get the feeling being that it was 1987 it probably didn't control that well did it?😂
it doesn’t. Doki Doki is japanese onomatopoeia and represents the sound of a beating heart. it’s often used through context to represent love and romance. for this game, the context implies it’s referring to nervousness and, well, panic.
Crazy how Similar Sonic and Mario’s early days were First entry was a big hit and new to gamers: Sonic 1 and Mario 1 2 Sequels to the first games made in different countries. Cd and 2, Lost levels and 2 And a fantastic 3rd entry that people regard as the best: Sonic 3&K and Super Mario Bros 3

I kinda come to realize that Japanese Super Mario Bros 2/Lost Levels started the short trend of games getting harder expansions like Mega Man 8 having Mega Man and Bass or Doom 2 doing Doom 2: Master Levels
In a way, Sonic the hedgehog kinda has a similar situation. I say kinda very heavily, but hear me out. Despite Sonic 2 coming out before CD by a year, a majority of fans say CD happens after Sonic 1, before 2. Now, Despite knowing a little bit of knowledge about Sonic the hedgehog, I'm entirely unsure if this is the case or not.
American SMB2 was made so we could be spared at the time from ever being asked to endure the intense difficulty that was Japan's SMB2. Then The Wizard was made so we could get an early look at "SUPER. MARIO BROS. THREEEEEEEEEE!".
they did the super players on super Mario Bros deluxe for Gameboy color & the graphics were the same as the first game. But the music sounded different

I will agree SMB2(J) was an eye-opener. When I realized I was only going to get through that one leaf-blowing level by doing leaps of faith and accepting that the coders put the spring platforms perfectly the right number of spaces apart, I stopped playing for awhile, had a chuckle and a prolonged spine-tingling meditation on it, and proceeded. I actually qualified for the "NO WARPS!" patch the same month we (in the U.S.A.) finally saw the game on the SNES combo cart (that same night.) It's not that hard of a game, it's just a paradigm-shift from the original and from many other games at the time. This narrator way, way, way overexaggerates the difficulty.
I wouldn't even say it's a paradigm shift from the original (later Mario games though, yes), it's basically just the harder half of the same game for the super skilled players who mastered the main game. But it continues the exact same core design philosophies as Mario 1, just now with the expectation that the player already knows how everything works and has mastered it all and so it doesn't have to teach anything to new players like Mario 1 did, it's like "You know and are good at everything we've taught you before, now here's the REAL challenge for you to throw all your skills and knowledge at." If you don't meet that level yet though then the game's gonna be rough, but that also means it's not for you yet. And yeah, it's really not THAT hard, people describe it as the "hardest, most unfair game to ever exist" when that's really not true at all. At the end of the day, it's still just Mario 1, but Mario 1 for people who have already fully mastered Mario 1 (and likewise that's what the bonus worlds A-D are to the main game of Lost Levels). Also here's a tip for that leaf-blowing springs level, it's not actually a leap of faith if you know the strategy: You can always tell where Mario is and thus aim him under these circumstances, a. if the screen is scrolling full-speed then Mario's in the middle of the screen, and b. if you're holding left and the screen isn't scrolling, then Mario's all the way on the leftmost side of the screen. If you know this thing about how the scrolling works and can take advantage of it to know where Mario is, then 7-3 is no problem and you can always aim your landing on the platforms easily, no blind faith required. It's an example of what I described where the game expects you to already know everything of how things work, even stuff like the mechanics of the camera/scrolling. Hope that helps!

Yes.
And THAT is why Super Mario Bros 3 should have been a retooled version of The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants in the West.
No, cause the Simpsons game started out as a Simpsons game, not Mario. Mario 2 started out as a Mario
