John Milton, Paradise Lost, Bk 1, The Invocation of the Muse

Having provided an introduction to Paradise Lost in the previous lecture, I speak here of how extraordinary the beginning of the epic is. It is conventional insofar as it uses the convention of the invocation of the muse. However, it announces right at the outset that he will speak of two men, one noted for his disobedience, leading to sin and death; the second for his obedience, leading to death and righteousness.
