  • In this video we take an updated look at Rivian Driver+ highway assist with the latest 2024.11.2 software update to see how it performs. This is also our first test of Rivian Driver+ with reduced visibility conditions. We had light to steady rain all during our test. We looked at the performance with merging traffic, curving roads, how well it stayed within its lane lines, keeping distance from vehicle in front, lane change assist performance, and how well it did in heavier traffic situations.

      Dude, if you are so upset about ads, why not get a premium subscription? You got an r1s I'm sure you can afford that.

    Thanks for the video. I’m watching in anticipation of the 2026 R2, and having experienced steering assist for the first time today in a Kia Forte rental. That system was pretty competent in 95% of the turns at 70+ mph, but drifted when the right lines broke for off ramps, and more aggressive curves on the freeway. I probably steered only 5% of what I would have for my 4 hr trip. That being said, reducing driver input by 95% does not equate to reducing attention span 95% - I probably paid 25% less attention. And it’s not something I’d rely on for surface driving. I hope Rivian makes significant progress in time for the R2 though.

      I believe they will make significant progress. Its a huge help on longer road trip and it does also work at low speeds. The system does a good job of displaying alerts when there are merges or the road curves up ahead. Its amazing what Rivian has done in such a short period of producing cars.

    Good to do the test in the rain because that is closer to real world conditions.

    Again, glad Rivian did this auto resume option, but not sure why it took this long, when Volvo had that feature in their Pilot Assist back in 2018.

    With the exception of the roads it covers, I've had a pretty good experience w/ Driver+. Some ping ponging and I feel it slows too much on some modest corners when not necessary (e.g. slows from 65 down to 60 or lower). Any insights into improvements to coverage? There are a lot of 2 lane highways I use and none of those are covered. Wondering if Rivian is concerned Driver+ not good enough to handle 2 lane highways (1 lane each direction).

      @ElectrifiedOutdoors  2 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for sharing. I can't answer about expanding coverage. You could be right about undivided highways with two way traffic. I believe Rivian plans to introduce a more advanced system so we will have to wait and see what that includes. It's a good system for such a new car maker IMO.

      The only reason I am holding off getting Rivian. Driver plus needs to be as good as Tesla and Hyundai’s…

    • @ElectrifiedOutdoors
      @ElectrifiedOutdoors  2 місяці тому +1

      That makes sense... FWIW the Rivian system is pretty good when compared to the base Tesla package which only includes lane keeping or standard auto pilot. To get the auto park and auto lane change there is an upcharge but the Tesla system is years ahead of everyone else and AFAIK is the only one using AI.

    Does your + disengage when you let go of the wheel???

    • @HmSultan02
      @HmSultan02 2 місяці тому

      not immediately, it'll warn you to keep hands on wheel, but if you still decide to keep hands off wheel it'll disengage.

      @@HmSultan02 mine is kicking me completely off as soon as my hand leaves. Kind of infuriating lol I liked the old version.

      No, only if I keep my hands off and ignore the prompts to place my hands on the wheel.

    I think the "late" slowdown might be due to the follow distance. I have the same issue on my Tesla Model 3 when I have it set to 3 car lengths, but no such issue when it's set to 5 car lengths.

    How does tbe R1S compare to the Acura MDX? I’m so used to Honda and Toyota reliability that I’m sure there’s a step back going to Rivian.

    • @ElectrifiedOutdoors
      @ElectrifiedOutdoors  2 місяці тому +1

      Our family also owns a 21 Honda Pilot touring. I haven't driven an MDX in a long time. The Rivian feels much higher quality inside and has a lot more high tech features. The ride in the Rivian is not as nice as an MDX I'm sure since the Rivian is an adventure vehicle. The nice thing about the Rivian is that you can adjust the suspension damping from soft/moderate/firm settings. The standard ride height provides the best ride. Reliability is probably not as good but it's not horrible. The biggest challenge is the wait for a service appointment. They will prioritize your appointment if it's a serious problem but something more minor can take a month or two to get service appointment. With all that said, it's an awesome vehicle and we enjoy them more each time we get behind the wheel.

      Have a 2018 MDX and a new R1S quad. Night and day - the MDX does ride nicer and is a nice vehicle but it's a dog in terms of acceleration and it also has less overall room inside (at least feels that way). I feel like I can pack more stuff in the R1S for kids, dogs, long trips, etc. Rivian interior is nicer. Haven't had any trouble w my R1S but important to note that often for minor things they will send a technician to your house - no driving needed. One of my favorite things about Tesla and Rivian.

    It needs to be WAY more aggressive about getting up to the higher speed- this is my #1 complaint of Driver +

  • @PeterPham
    @PeterPham Місяць тому

    I have both the R1S & Tesla Y. The rivian is so far behind on autopilot. The Tesla can absolutely do merges and drive around town easily. It's disappointing that the rivian can't even do lane assist unless you are on certain highways. Why can't it be enabled on a surface street?

    • @ElectrifiedOutdoors
      @ElectrifiedOutdoors  Місяць тому +1

      Agree. Tesla had a huge head start though. It sounds like Rivian has big plans for their driver assist suite so we will have to see where things go with that. Tesla will continue to get exponentially better as times goes on with their AI based system and dojo super compute.
