I thought in Elizabeth Wilson s shostakovich biography it says he did suffer suicidal thoughts before signing in to the Party in the 60s, and his son was there apparently...

It’s Zhdanov, the Soviet propaganda leader who denounced Shostakovich, among other composers, in 1948.
