  • GOCHAK
Thousandss of Buddhists in Ladakh recently performed mass prostration(lying on the floor with arms outwards in prayer form, called "Dandavat" in hindi)to mark the first sermon by Lord Buddha. Gochak is celebrated during the first fifteen days of the Tibetan lunar calendar, which Buddhists in Ladakh follow. It is believed that Lord Buddha had turned the first wheel of his sermons around this time. It is considered one of the most sacred fortnights of the year, it sees Buddhists moving from one village to another, traversing nearly many a mile by prostrating at every few steps.( about 108 along with recitations of OM MANE PADME HUM, confirmed one of the participants.) The ritual is practiced to consciously make an effort towards overpowering the ego.People ( men , women and children) leave their homes in freezing temperature and begin the journey early in the morning. They take care to protect their hands , legs , face etc with adequate clothing and masks . The procession is very disciplined and as i photographed them i took care not to come in their way and disturb their prayers in any way.On the way there are others who play their part in the ritual by serving steaming cups of butter tea and biscuits, to the participants in the procession. Some volunteer to sweep the roads and keep it clean for the procession.TheGochak fortnight ends with a festival at the Matho monastery called Matho Nagrang.
