Not Bruce Wayne, of course, but Bruce the hurt and vulnerable boy who went through something so similar. Which leads to the son being the first to reach out and trust Batman at the end, when everyone else trapped in the water recoils in fear from him.

    I love that the movie essentially starts on what Batman considers a personal failure, letting the kid lose his parents. It hammers home the theme of vengeance, as he is taking revenge for the kid.

    • @eyespy3001
      @eyespy3001 Рік тому +3

      Batman didn’t fail at anything here. He didn’t _let_ the father (not parents ) be killed by The Riddler. There’s no indication that Batman was hot on the heels of The Riddler up to this point, and he somehow let him slip by. By all accounts, this is the first time Batman is heating about The Riddler. Beyond that, if the theme of the movie is vengeance, it does a poor job of conveying it. There is no relationship established between Batman and this kid beyond two glances. Batman doesn’t pursue The Riddler _because_ of this kid. In fact, the character of Batman in this movie is very passive. He has almost zero personal drive, and is pushed along by the plot. He has no motives, minus this contrived notion of vengeance because he calls himself as such.

      Thanks so much man I’m glad you got something new out of this video. You’re so right about Bruce growing and changing man I think that’s the #1 thing that gets left out of past Batman movies. What makes Batman compelling is not how fucked up he is but how he heals himself. Really hoping Matt reeves keeps exploring that by adding robin and the batfam in the future

      @@Glumberbumber Matt Reeves talked about *"Something in the Way"* being an important part of crafting this adaptation of Batman. It informed how Bruce dressed, the grungy look of his Batcave and this Gotham but also the main thoroughline in of Batman's arc - the thing stopping him from achieving the change he wants to see in Gotham. So yeah, it had a lot of meaning.

Rather than just a edgy broken figure of the night. One scene that notably knocked me on my ass, which you touched on at the end of the video, was his realization at the end of the movie that inspiring hope over exacting vengeance should be the devine goal. This is portrayed beautifully in the rescue scene on the top of the convention center. His entire goal until that point was to strike fear in his enemies, but at the end a woman is seen holding onto him, not wanting to let him go. She saw more hope and safety in him than the first responders, in spite of his dark image. This affected me.

Try to connect dots and then play devils advocate with yourself and see things from a perspective that's not yours. Also be extremely patient. Sometimes analysis paralysis can happen. You might get stuck on one small detail for days and even have trouble sleeping because it's in your head. Sometimes it's ok to walk away and come back fresh after a little while.

    Astute analysis bro. This is exactly why I liked the movie so much. Most people that didn't like this movie didn't fully they understood it. They don't understand the nuance or how subtle it is. There is SO MUCH subtext. From the story, the acting, the cinematography, the music, etc...there were a lot of layers. (Esp when we contrast that with some of the melodrama from Christopher Nolan's trilogy.) Whereas those other Batman movies were great films and a lot of fun, The Batman is a "film". A cinematic masterpiece where Reeves used every tool in his toolbox to create the most original and compelling iteration of Batman yet.

    Quick note: the guitar is not out of tune to itself and bandmates technically, it's just tuned down a halfstep from standard tuning, which is one of many alternate tunings. Using a capo achieves the same but in the opposite direction. Great video! Look forward to the next!

    It might have been said before, but the song isn't "out of tune" it's alternate tuning. It's common enough in modern music to not be a big deal (unless you're trying to play it and don't know lol). Most of the times alternate tuning is about keeping in line with the vocals, but more times nowadays, it's a way for a song to sound provocative or fresh, plus, musicians like to try different things to avoid burnout.
    Great breakdown. Very insightful.

    • @loldoctor
      @loldoctor Рік тому +2

      I was bothered by that comment as well, especially because the tuning isn't even that different from standard--five of the six strings remain the same relative to one another, and dropping the sixth string two semitones is probably the most common tuning other than standard (especially in rock music). However, it is an usual tuning for an acoustic guitar, and I think it gives the song a much darker and someone unique-sounding tone. This definitely informs the scene and one could extend this to mean that Batman/Bruce is himself "detuned" (rather than "out of tune"), he's sinking, he's low, he's dark, etc.

    this is such an amazing analysis omg!! i love how much they made bruce like kurt cobain, im obsessed with both bruce and kurt so it was amazing seeing a media connect them!!!
    edit: also when u mentioned the song being tuned down, to emphasize that more, it's played in drop C#, meaning the lowest guitar string, the standard low E, has to be tuned down 2 1/2 notes down, which is reallyyyy low for a standard 6 string guitar. Also the recording used a broken guitar Kurt bought at a pawn shop, and it would go out of tune very quickly

    I noticed that shot @2:42 with Real campaign poster and Gotham Square Garden. This is where the "real change" of Riddler's plan will come to a climax. This is also where Batman's real change happens, where he realizes vengeance isn't enough. He also must become a symbol of hope. It's nice foreshadowing.
