  • In the second of a special two-part episode, performance psychologist Gio Valiante calls on his vast experience working with some of the world’s top athletes and entrepreneurs. Shane and Valiante discuss failure and the fear that holds you back from making the most of your talent, shifting from an ego orientation to a mastery orientation, common misconceptions about success and failure, and how we learn when it’s time to cut our losses and move on to a different challenge.
Valiante is regarded as one of the most successful performance coaches in the world. He’s worked extensively with golfers on the PGA and LPGA Tours, Olympic athletes, and leading figures in NCAA football and the NFL, where he served as the Head Performance Coach of the Buffalo Bills. He has also logged over 5,000 hours coaching some of the most sophisticated investors in the world, including hedge fund manager Steve Cohen.

embracing fear and being present in every moment of life
being realistic yet directionally positive, celebrating the positive moments, and being kind to oneself and others
spending time with interesting and remarkable individuals
a good life is measured by the quality of one's experiences rather than material achievements

Elon Musk may have had moments where he has been very successful, but his behavior over the past 2 or so years hurts Dr. Valiante's argument, IMO.

I honestly think the word fail(ure) is overused. You may attempt several things that aren't successful but the only way you fail is if you quit (IMHO)
