Believe it or not if you read the documentary about this song Paul says that his intention was to attempt it one time, if he failed it would never be published. He said in the weeks leading up to the initial studio cut. He sang this song hundreds of times in the shower in the car on the street and rehearsed over and over. Once He hit the studio he said he told them first cut only cut. If I get it fine if not...that's it. So the original cut is what was played on the radio. I sang sing it...but it takes a lot out of me.
I'm sure he could hit that part without screaming, as he's certainly hit notes as high as those before and after without screaming. He sang it so many times to give it the very specific vocal sound that he wanted.
Paul practiced this song relentlessly because John would tease him that he should sing it instead (because it suited it his R&B voice better.) So Paul spent a week yelling to get his voice properly hoarse/conditioned before he did his take and this is the result.
Black Francis of the Pixies first learned his unique singing style singing this song, when his Thai neighbour told him to "scream it like you hate that bitch!"
Am I way off base here: I thought karaoke meant that the MELODY of the song was played while you sang the lyrics. All I hear in the sound track here is a background beat. Is this truly karaoke??
