Used to get a 15 to Trafalgar Square every Saturday in 2000/1 aged 12/13 to go to the EasyEverything internet cafe , used to get a 24 hour pass for £2 😂 and remember seeing that open top RM on the 23 , and also remember all the other RM routes that ran down the Strand (6,9,11,13,15,23) good times seems like yesterday but so much had changed lovely video
It was comforting to see an MCW after all those Routemasters with the tinny engine sounds coming out of them. Those London United Metrobuses looked well turned out and sounded in good mechanical condition which I wouldn't have expected in 03. Enjoyed seeing the Merc Citaro bendies in the mix as well. Interesting period captured here.
A few of Shepherds Bush's Metros were given a make-over as the service had been increased on the 94s but there were no extra Routemasters around to use, so a few crew Metros were booked out each day.... Occasionally they escaped out onto the 9's as well.....
@@jamesfrench7299Back in 1981 LT introduced new Titans at Barking that were crew operated from new! And all through the 1980s crew worked OPO buses would cover from Routemasters if they were short.......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus so the driver could ignore the passengers as they file right past. Nice shift if you could get it. I used to have a novel in my hand and pretend to be reading it in peak hours as most pax dipped a card, and it got some amusing reactions.
@@jamesfrench7299 Yes, you would be a crew driver and not trained on ticket machines, nor receiving the higher, OPO, rate of pay. Just because you hadn't got a Routemaster didn't change your job. If a route was OPO on Sundays (and bank Hols) it was worked by drivers from OPO rosters, the crew drivers being Rest Day......
Makes me sad to think when I was in my early 20s and that routemaster were on their way out, and that all the routes had been carved up. I remember when I would travel on the 23 from Aldwych to Becontree Heath when I was a nipper with my Gran after nursery!
Yes, the 23's did go to Becontree Heath back then.... In 1981 the 5's was converted back to crew RML from OPO DMS and instead of finishing in East Ham, swapped with the 23's to go to Becontree while the 23s finished at East Ham, although they were extended westwards to Ladbroke Grove. In around 1985 time the 23 was changed into a 15A and the number 23 was retired,,,,,,

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus that explains a lot.
A crewed metro, that's a first.

Not long after that they retired them, but thankfully they still have them around London and places for tea and events and everything
There is still a tourist route with them, the T15 from Tower Hill to Trafalgar Square......
I remember this one when we was little
