  • Today we're doing a deep dive on NBA vs. WNBA salaries! The common misconception is that WNBA players should be pay more based on the massive discrepancy in pay between the W and NBA.
I explain why the pay in the WNBA is actually fair when you look behind the curtain and see the revenue splits.
Do you guys think their pay is fair? Let me know in the comments!

Increasing revenues should result in bigger salaries, however until revenues are better aligned with costs and reflect a profit, or at least a very much reduced loss, players demanding much bigger salaries without this alignment is nonsensical. This is where the WNBA Commissioner with her background with Deloitte & Touche should be able to create projections that set a potential date when alignment is possible. There is a big risk however basing the projections on a single player like Caitlin Clark, who has attracted millions of new fans, that this could backfire should anything change. The fact that the WNBA seems to be massively disrespecting CC puts at risk any such optimistic projections that will also seriously affect attracting sponsors large and small. The WNBA should thank its lucky stars that there is a CC on which to grow the league and so reward the players appropriately.

      Excellent comment.
      Plus:
The demands of the WNBA players have been so thoroughly dismantled by economists and analysts, their analysis are everywhere on UA-cam. It's amazing they keep yelling they want more (and ESPN is helping them make more noise) and at the same time they stick a finger in each ear to avoid hearing the truth.
The WNBA will lose 50 million dollars. Again. And that's with the best talent that has come out of college since 1997.

Yes, the salary cap will spike, like a lot. But even if the TV money is like 5 times as much, the cap shouldnt spike to more then double. Use the rest of the money to train refs, coach ALL PLAYERS/COACHES/GM's in how to behave in front of a camera, and invest in better fundamental coaches that show them how to make layups!

Negotiating for a percentage of revenue makes no sense while the WNBA continues to lose money. If I'm working for a company that never makes a profit, I'm going to do two things:
    1) Keep my mouth shut and be glad I'm getting paid at all.
    2) Go hunting for a job with a company that has a future.
If the WNBA wants equality, that's fine. Figure out the percentage of PROFITS that NBA players make and negotiate towards THAT. If they want to earn more, than they need to put out a product that people want to see. Right now, their product line pretty much sucks.
They have one item that sells like crazy, and that item is Caitlin Clark. The W needs to suck it up and accept that fact, or shut up an wallow in their misery.

And it all seems to be 'now' on the coattails of Caitlin Clark, yet CC gets abused by this league. They should accept and market this with CC and ride with the wave, and the change will come soon enough. Worst thing would be to chase CC away to Europe or another league, and the W would be in serious trouble of surviving.

A new CBA should allow a team player sponsors with a uniform team cap. If the players are capable of creating a 3v3 league, they should be able to collectively secure sponsors. This would raise the base salary and be a measure of their value. The base salary is in their hands to determine without excuses. Whether a salary can reach a million or more will also be self-determined by the players. The WNBA can remain focused on being self-sufficient and sustainable, or disband unprofitable teams as any business would.

The bottom line is determined by business economics... Assuming no corruption wasting money in things like management salaries and expenses, etc,, at the very least, the league needs to be above break-even. Running losses each year can only be sustained by new money. And who, in their right mind, would want to pour more money into a losing business?? Increasing salaries when the league is losing money is just directly taking more money from the owners and sticking them with the losses.
You can't just demand money because you believe you 'deserve it'. Your belief doesn't trump the reality of the situation. If players overseas are making more money than WNBA players are, it seems to me they either have a better product or have marketed better. You need to compete with those leagues better! I'm honestly not knowledgeable about the overseas leagues, so maybe I'm wrong somehow??

Commanding Lexi to stop getting rid of a pass to her like the ball is a hot potato. She had such a great percentage on 3’s…..that she stopped trying them in order to keep her high rate. That’s a coach not confronting a new big problem. In other words, if Fever stands still as number 6….I think many fans will fade away. Shrinking crowds…..means…..salaries not moving.

Just because she was complaining recently about her pay, Angel Reese should maybe look at her lifestyle first. Her rent is currently more than her WNBA salary. She’s paying more than $80,000 annually in rent. Maybe make some better choices.
Even with the new media contract coming up in 2 years, the league’s share will be $100M, with the other $100M going to the NBA. I would expect the max allowable towards salaries would be about 40%. So, you’re looking at about $40M to cover about 144 players. This will leave room for a median wage of around $275,000 annually. Of course there’s going to be a range of wages across the players, put this is just to point out that it’ll be quite some time before we’ll be seeing any 7 figure contracts.
If they’re wanting wages any where near that, they would need to see a media deal somewhere near $800M to $1B to be able to get the personal contracts that they keep saying they are worth.

Whether it's a lock-out by the owners or a strike by the players, if they think much more than their family members will care after day three then the people of the WNBA are more delusional than I thought.
I think they are relying on a lot of the Caitlin Clark effect, and those numbers can disappear just as quickly as they showed up if the next year's treatment of CC22 by the league, players, refs, and media does not improve.
The WNBA may also think they'll have another jump in interest when either Paige Bueckers and/or JuJu Watkins join the league. There is no guarantees of such an increase as has been proven many times in every sport. So often the "next greatest" ends up being a letdown.

If the ticket sales, ad revenue and merchandise sales increase then, yes, there should be pay increase.
BUT... It should all be balanced on the money going out.
If the WNBA is still making a loss over all then, no.
BUT... Individual players should be getting a cut of any NAMED merchandise sales.
That is fair because they are selling on THAT PLAYERS name.
    Not generic team shirts though.

I think a 50% raise is quite healthy. 500% is out of the question. The league isn't 500% more profitable this year .. its still not profitable even considering Clark.

Since the league has never turned a profit in 30 years… if players get a “share” of the profits (“as a percentage like the NBA”), that would mean the WNBA players should *pay* owners their portion of the debt to owners each year?
I think they should be paid more as the league has seen an increase in interest (one year sample size). Caitlin should get $1M as she’s the (biggest reason) for the increase in interest. But several new players: Brink, Ju Ju, Paige B… are going to push the league further it would be good to protect the better players so they don’t leave for China, Russia….
But the league has costs to consider not just salaries for players. As soon as the league *is* profitable, then WNBA players should get an equal share of profiteering like the NBA provides players for jerseys, tickets, TV…. That seems fair.

If I remember correctly the media deal can be reopened in 4 years. If you believe the hype Paige will be better than CC, but will the fans follow her? Juju is also slated to be better than CC, again will her fans follow? Bigger question, will CC get tired of the abuse and poor quality of referees, and not renew her contract to become a pro golfer or go overseas to play? It’s not like she’s hurting for money. For what it’s worth, this media deal is a little over 3x the present one, so salaries could go up theoretically 3x. As attendance continues to grow, I think the players should ask for a part of merchandise sales and a part of the gate above a certain amount, maybe more incentive driven compensation, as we’ve seen in the NFL guaranteed contracts don’t work very well except for the player.

I think wnba players get a housing stipend to go with their salaries and other perks and bonuses so its not just their base salary they get. But I do think they deserve more money overall. The nba players are well overpaid in comparison. The wnba players probably should more for rookies to $150k maybe on some scale or something and up to twice as much for max to $500k which is only a handful of players. The league should be able to make enough to pay that starting in a year or two as something like this is not an automatic increase for all players.

No disrespect intended here because I love watching Caitlin Napheesa and Arike play…..closest to exciting basketball but, 40 snoozefest games per season with 10 min quarters and a very dismal audience until this season when Caitlin landed on the scene.
Compared to 82 games per season sold out arenas and millions on TV viewers……higher pay that what they’re getting right now but, let’s not get carried away with comparing the number$$.

First, I do not do the dealing, work with leagues getting deals, so I do not know or remember what I heard about what the right words are used. Silver had to work getting $200 million when the other side wanted to pay around $125 million. Silver had to throw only two names getting extra money. What does this mean, players before this draft class could not make enough revenue past $125 million. Silver used two names being Clark and Reese to get the extra $75 million all are about, as I do not remember the real amount. If not for Clark and some worth of the other 2024 draft picks the $200 million would not have happened. Also mentioned another $60 million may be added. After this 2024 season showing how petty the women players were towards mainly Clark but other drafts, I would not feel there is a catch clause should the league not do better than $200 million will go down. Some of the players that all know are so petty that it is them not getting this and that seeing what the new players are getting and (let me just write the truth) Clark became one of the best players as a rookie Wilson was beyond angry. Sales Wilson is the 5th and maybe just above 6th. None of the past players had viewership, revenue and was not marketable. Clark leads all of the WNBA and tops in all other leagues within the top 10. Reese was second in sales within WNBA to only after her pettiness will not be that next year and following should she not start to get serious towards her game. A few more drafts are doing better in sales more than any other players of the 144. It has been the players keeping themselves back on their, let's call it like it was seen, trying to get certain players hurt enough to be out of the game. Women are known about revenge. That was shown a few times by players to other players. The main player was Clark having the best revenue, becoming the face of WNBA, and out playing almost the top player in the world being Wilson. Next year should Clark stay alive she will be getting MPV maybe every year for a while. Without her, for now, there would not be over a million or two of new fans. These women like Plum, Stewart, WILSON, Reese (already) and a few more activist do not change up their interviews, their play and much more they will stay in the wishing and not getting paid. That million a year will not happen till more new players join that can bring in more than enough viewership and revenue where the NBA can stop the charity. After watching this year all of the 2023 and past players will be gone or most all. The top players will never see close to a million dollars playing.
