  • On the last day of Black August, as President Biden calls for an assault weapons ban and more funding for police, we speak with UCLA professor Robin D. G. Kelley, who recently published the revised and expanded 20th anniversary edition of his book "Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination," with an added foreword by poet Aja Monet. The new edition was inspired by the Black Lives Matter uprisings in 2020 and covers topics from critical race theory to state militarism that Kelley says "continues to this day." Kelley says the book's legacy conveys that "we don't have the luxury to just fight for reform. We can't survive that way. We've got to fight for revolutionary change."

Funding the police instead of funding grassroots community programs/higher education is why this country stays stuck on stupid.

I know "stupid" doesn't seem like a compliment, but compared to the truth - malicious racism - calling it "stupid" becomes a matter of _praise-by-faint-damnation._

We have a similar issue in South Africa the government spends more money on police. This extension of police officers comes with huge profits for the capitalist. The moment you start the process in SA. The media benefits from advertising, the clothing companies that make their uniforms, the construction companies that build more stations, the stationary companies from extra stationery, etc. The power chain of capital continues. Instead of building technical colleges for working-class youth and community development interventions.

I'd like to know where the practical application of the rhetoric of social and political movements, have moved the masses to act in ways consistent with the high ideals of these so-called movements? I'll wait for an answer?

"FIRST WE WERE ASHAMED, then we were shocked, and we even investigated. Then we denied it and lied. After that we ignored and repressed it, yawned and lost interest. Now is the worst phase of all: We’ve started to extol the killers of children. That’s how far we’ve gone.
The first child I remember wasn’t even a day old. His mother, Faiza Abu Dahuk, gave birth to him at a checkpoint. She was turned away by the soldiers from there and from two more checkpoints, until she had to carry him, all through a cold and rainy night. When she arrived at the hospital, he was already dead.
The matter came up at a cabinet meeting. An officer was dismissed and a mini storm ensued. This was in April 1996, during the year of hope and illusions. Four years later, when the second intifada broke out, soldiers killed Mohammed al-Dura in front of the cameras and Israel had already transitioned to the phase of denials and lies: Dura didn’t die. Israeli soldiers didn’t kill him; maybe he shot himself, maybe he’s alive to this day.
Remnants of shame and guilt still clung somehow. After that came 20 years of indifference and complacence. Soldiers and pilots have killed 2,171 children and teenagers, and not one of these cases shocked anyone here, or sparked a real investigation or led to a trial. More than 2,000 children in 20 years-100 children, three classrooms a year. And all of them, down to the last, were found guilty of their own death.
Any Israeli would be happy to explain that they were terrorists and the soldiers, or the police had no choice but to execute them. In the alternative between the lives of the children and the sacred lives of the soldiers, of course we prefer the soldiers, although there’s almost always a third possibility: for no one to be killed.
Last week the next phase was declared. Israel praises the killers of children; they are the new heroes."
    Gideon Levy

The LAST thing the Police need is MORE funding.
We need to fund mental health and social services instead, police funding tends to go to weapons and fancy toys that militarize the police instead of making they enforce the actual laws the way they are officially supposed to be enforced.

whether he says defund the police or fund the police, both sayings are not clear. you have to explain what you mean. these partial quotes are useless and a waste of time.
increasing police force and militarizing them is not the right way of address the problem. it's just a way of making the police a very dangerous force, which will be on the extreme right-wing side, and it would increase the risk of civil war. And I wouldn't be surprised that the Democratic establishment wants the same thing as the GOP: democracy replaced by a form of fascism worse than nazi germany.

I won't go as far to say the Democrats or the Left, want fascism. The Right says they do, as we all known, but I agree that the rhetoric and sloganeering is counter-productive and don't speak clearly to the issues they are directed at. The phrase BLM, does not speak directly to the serious problem of unjustified killing of Black people. A little bit of forethought would have predicted what the response from the Right would be to that phrase. The same people did not just double down on that poor thinking, but tripled down on it, by later saying "defund the police" and then "abolish the police".. When I hear the phrase community policing, I think of the community policing itself. The first level of policing is the values a people have and the standards they set for themselves and their communities. This discussion in this video, just keeps the loop of talking in a circle, going.
