    him calling her merciful right after saying "she loves like sleep to the freezing" kills me. this entire song is painful but that last part really solidifies it for me, the cruel mercy of falling asleep while freezing so that at least you won't feel the pain as you die, and you could truly argue that it is a mercy if it weren't for the fact that here she is both the sleep and the cold, both what spares him the pain and what caused it to begin with. he stays cause it's worth it, "i have this some of the time", and saying all that one right after the other makes me think of how if you are dying, freezing to death, you might as well stay. it is worth it. he is hers and she is his, and she loves him cause he might be freezing to death but she will be merciful. there's an illusion of comfort in the abuse. so he stays. it's too real, man, breaks my fucking heart

    As a male survivor of domestic vilonence that isnt talked about as much. I relate so much and get so emotional with this song.

    I feel bad for people who only know Take Me to Church. He has such a deep (albeit short) discography, he’s a masterful lyricist, singer, guitarist, poet, all of it. Check out Shrike (the live version on the Ireland late show, can’t remember the name of the show). Breathtaking.

    I think the fact that the riff and music sounds so happy really shows how sometimes on the outside it seems so perfect and happy, but behind closed doors it's dark, and harmful, like how DV often is: not obvious to an outside eye

    Abused women are often asked "why did you stay/why didn't you leave sooner" in a perpetual need to Victim Blame rather than look at the emotional financial and physical control exerted by the abuser. This song answers these questions but cleverly from the rare instance of the Male victim so
    the misogyny fails to cloud the issue - abusers know what they are doing offering just enough sweetness to hold/gaslight their victim. A sweet melody to deliver a dark truth.

      The rare instance that men are victims?? They are very often victims, yes by other men but also women. They just often feel they can't report it because they won't be believed.

    Check out his lyrics first with the recorded track, then see a live performance to admire his live vocals, his playing, & how tight his whole band is. Then saunter over to the music video for the visuals and storytelling. I tell you it'll be an amazing longer video but it'll never be boring though the same song's played thrice. You'll be discovering something new each time. I recommend doing this to From Eden. He's actually releasing a new EP Eat Your Young on the 17th & the snippet's been going around tiktok. & if you really wanna be floored look at his 5 song pop up performance in the subway with no mic, just him 7 other band members a midi piano, violin & tambourine.

      The recorded version on the album and the first video of this were recorded at dawn on the roof of an abandoned hotel at dawn on his laptop after a photo shoot as an afterthought. The birds do chime in.

    it's also worth noting that, usually, when the song is sung from a man's perspective, the music video is usually from a woman's perspective and vice versa. you can see it in at least the music video for this song (Cherry Wine) and Take Me To Church

    One of my favorite Hozier songs. Set aside the lyrical meaning and depth, it’s just a beautifully pleasing song to listen to.

      @@ohef17 oh that was kinda distorted, the original track though live was cleaner and had actual birdsong here & there in the background

      @@zelbernil3790yeah, it looks like the lyric video pitched the song up slightly... probably to avoid copyright. So we found slightly distorted and chipmunky because his voice is deeper in the actual track.

    Cherry Wine is such a delicately pretty tune and Hozier's voice is gently sublime. It makes the imagery of the lyrics even worse once they register.

    My favorite part of this song is that it’s written in the male perspective but the video is the female

    The lyrics portray the man in the relationship is being abused. But if you watch the music video, it’s the woman that’s being abused.

  • @CsevetAisava
    @CsevetAisava 4 місяці тому

    Hozier has a voice that can do these really intense anguished or exultant vocals, and I think the relatively subdued, gentle singing and melody here was exactly the right style for a song about the way domestic abuse victims often try to justify and rationalize the way their lover treats them.
    I love love love Hozier’s latest album, Unreal Unearth. It’s absolutely amazing listening to it all in order, but also in pieces! A lot of the songs deal with grief and loss (of a person, of a relationship, of a culture) but the songs gradually incorporate the theme that all endings are sort of beginnings in their own right. Some of my favorite songs are Unknown/Nth, Who We Are, Icarian Carrion, First Light, and Butchered Tongue if you’re looking for suggestions!
