I am 14 and started taking the gym serious a couple of months ago (writing down every sesh, focusing on progressive overload and eating proper) and after this video I got a motivation boost and for the first time in my life did 40 consecutive push ups. Felt real good.
Honestly I enjoy the pain from lifting. I wouldn’t consider myself a masochist but there’s nothing better than the burning sensation of going beyond failure and pushing your muscles to the max.
ik this is an older video by Sean but this was genuinely helpful. Im starting to focus on progressive overload and was questioning if I'm even working hard enough because I'd feel like it wasn't that much hard work at the gym, now I know to go in and really work those weights and give it my absolute all, no more "more reps, less weight" bs
I feel like there's a stigma in making legit noises when you're straining your ass off. Especially towards the end of a set of heavy deads or squats. I've never once in my life faked a face or a noise in the gym
I feel like you can clearly tell when someone is doing that, I've seen countless new guys/older guys and females suddenly, out of nowhere in their..."warm up" starting to grit teeth and grunt 🤦♂️dude you just started, chill out 🤣
The 2nd hint is great ! It's OK to feel a bit nervous when there's a chance you're about to fail. Knowing that you have the same feeling at your level is very reassuring. Thank you for your honest approach man, your vids are awesome 👍
I’m 49 years old and have been hitting the weights off and on since I was around 13. There have been significant breaks in my physical fitness in my life and they are no one’s fault my own. That being said this gentleman‘s advice seems to be very sound and intelligent and based on science and not horse shit that you get from some 22-year-old dude that has been in the gym since he was a junior in high school. I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable as it pertains to physical fitness and growing size and doing it safely, however, Sean I believe is really helping me make some good changes for the future as I work past 50 this year
Seems like Sean has upped his youtube game in the last few months. I've been watching much more after kinda forgetting about him. He seems more confident and purposeful. Good job! (Or maybe I was just not getting notifications or something!)
Be patient man, training hard a few times doesn’t mean you’ll get a great physique. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I definitely can relate to you tho, I’ve been there
A thumbs-up straight away based on the first few words. Sean is absolutely correct when he debunks the idea that working out should be fun. Maybe if you're infirm or have various health issues "fun" exercises could be beneficial, but for anyone wanting to become fit, lean and build muscle most sessions should be hard work, not "fun". The enjoyment comes afterwards when you can wallow in the dopamine and endorphins created by pushing yourself.
Dude, I was doing leg presses like you were doing at 4:25 the other night and my face contorted so much that I feel like I nearly dislocated my jaw. The stress was real during that entire set. Good to know that the ugly face is a normal thing 🤣
I workout in an old school gym in my university (it's also free) and instead of making faces I just grunt on those last reps and everybody's cool with it, I even get nods because of the intensity I put in that set. I fvcking love old school gyms
i did legs yesterday, during my hack squat, leg press, and calve raises.. i felt like i was damn close to passing out after my sets. vision be blurry as hell and i be breathing hard. my legs felt like they were gonna fall off or tear off the bone. thats training hard
this is reassuring to hear. I just did leg day today (focused on back squats) and that third point you mentioned hit too close to home. On the last few reps (especially in the later sets) I was genuinely not comfortable. I always enter leg day with some sort of optimism but when I start doing the lifting I get pretty stressed in between sets and sometimes start to question my existence toward the end of a hard set.
Training hard isn’t even hard imo That’s the fun part It’s harder to eat enough food each day imo I hate the idea that I need to consume soo much life only to get beeg muscles How selfish
Yeah maybe I’m the masochist or sociopath that he talked about lmao. I find myself sometimes having to dial back because I’m under recovering for my goals
@@paladindanse98 a 300-500 calorie surplus is more than enough tho, a lot of people are under the misconception that they need 1000+ calories surplus to gain significant mass.
Honestly, pleasantly surprised how much my headspace lines up with these. Especially the nervousness prior to sets. Always figured it was a sign of me just wanting to procrastinate, but I've generally been good at keeping time in between reps and like you said having that moment of pause before getting back into it.
the nervousness one I definitely agree with. When I'm sitting there getting closer and closer to the next set I get more and more nervous because the last set was so difficult
Solid points! Put the phone away, remove distractions, & focus!!! Have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone & really get your head in the game during each workout!
Thank you for this... I come from competing 20 years ago. I was surrounded by guys working with this intensity at the bodybuilding gym I went to. I got back into it now and don't see any intensity at all from anyone at the local gym, and all this new science is skewing things. But the thing I have noticed is the rate of improvement, at which those that are training with intensity are achieving, is outpacing those that are not.
This is such a great video, as a perfectionist I often stress and obsess over 'am I doing enough' or 'did I do that workout correctly' so being able to relate with most of the points on this list and knowing I am pushing myself makes me feel great.
Dude thanks so much for these great points. I started my weightlifting journey recently and I was wondering why everyone is always so calm and collected while exercising while I’m over here making ugly ass faces and really struggling to pump those last reps. You really made me feel a lot better and confident that I’m definitely pushing myself to my limits. I’m ready to go feel that pain tomorrow 💪🏼
I've only been lifting for just over a year and I thought that nervous feeling I get before sets was just a 'me thing' and will sometimes question what's wrong with me. Thanks for validating that this is completely normal!
3:53 , so relatable every time I’m just wondering why am I doing this, it hurts it’s hard, and at the and of the workout I’m the happiest person and ready to do it tomorrow all over again
This is a real motivational video. Started lifting at the age of 32, and took me another year or so to get into a structured training plan, with everything else that's going around (family, kids and work), I sometimes wonder why the hell am I doing this. I can humbly say I'm most if not all boxes on these 7 things you laid out Sean. Another motivator to keep moving forward.
I’m so glad you mentioned being nervous cuz I’ve been feeling that way for a couple years and thought I was just overly analytical and afraid of failure. Haha. Turns out it seems to be a natural reaction for those who are competitive enough with themselves to try to beat their last session
I was afraid that I wasn't training hard enough before clicking on this video. But I am glad that I fit in NONE of those points. Thanks for this little confirmation Sean!! Gym is absolute hell for me and I love it for that!
Last workout for core i was just laying on the ground after the end for about 5mins just laughing like a psycho from relief, thanks for validating my inner joker.
Look, im 32, never been overweight but have always been the "skinny" guy and finally had enough and things need to change so i have started to workout, my biggest goal is to gain weight and muscle. Im nearing my third month of it and this video helped me realize im on the right path. The first two months were really rough. This month however Its been a very weird month. The first month i didnt notice any changes really, I used to have 1 - 2 meals never eating breakfast and normally all bad foods. I shifted that and forced myself to eat better, now i have 3-5 meals a day and have cut down my caffeine intake drastically. Used to have a 3+ coffees a day, now i have barely 1 cup. I dont even feel fully awake anymore until i eat breakfast. I was starting to get really discouraged by not really seeing any results physically the past two months. But this month I realized i have gained almost 15 lbs total and aside from realizing my veins seem to be getting bigger around my body it has been quite a system shock. I am starting to feel completely different mentality, i can focus better, i get more done, i havent had any headaches or health issues, i dont feel as depressed or miserable, my attitude towards the gym has also been really positive like a reward for myself that i get to go. It is weird to explain really. It's like a way "i can just be" and that is like my mental peace outlet where i get to go listen to my favorite songs and release my daily stress. This video has helped me realize that all the struggle this month has broughten has some tremendous positives along with them and i know im on the right path! For anyone like me, dont slow down.. BREAK through that damn wall. Cause once you pass it the grass is greener on the other side and you will thank yourself for it in the long run. Remember its a marathon NOT a sprint and every step you take is just one step closer to your goal!
Been watching your channel consistently for 5 years straight, I don’t think I can say that about any other fitness channel. Keep up the good work and quality no BS content Sean!

Every point is spot on accurate, great video! I have deadlifts to do in 5 hours from now and I'm already thinking about it and getting psyched out for it! Same thing happens on leg day with squats.
I used to love squats in high school when I only did half reps... I've been really pushing myself on squats lately cause I want to get to that zone where I really enjoy them.
Agree entirely. My partners chuckle when I have to take 15 seconds to get my shit together before any set of squat or deadlift but I have to be hyper focused to get a max effort out of myself.
Totally relatable! I learnt what musle fatigue is from this guy. I lost 6kgs in 6 months. This guy talks perfect sense! ❤️ Not to mention, I'm using the workout plan he mailed me for free.
These are just really good, straight advice and I really like how Sean has articulated the points, this really resonated with me. I try and remind myself that I don’t want to be disappointed at the end that I could have done better or more. Another way I know I’ve had a great workout is my fatigue level: if I’m like ready for bed at 22:30, and just am out like a light - I probably worked out hard
I always play a hype song right before a heavy set, remember my form/how it should feel and a deep breath right before then i yell "lightweight baby!!" In my head 😂😅
I dread my leg workouts to the point where I'm psychologically looking for excuses not to. I go hard or don't bother. But boy, it feels great when it's over.👍😩😌🇦🇺

#8 Being afraid to look at the logbook entry for the results of what you did the last several times on that movement because you know you need to do better than before and it scares you.
yep, that feeling when i look at the logbook and i hit for example 8 reps with some weight and i know that now i need to get 9 reps... anxiety rising :D
I know that fear, especially high rep to failure stuff
Sean telling it how it is as always 👍
Side note: You know you’re not training hard enough if you’ve never shat yourself on the last set
😂
Or having eaten about 300g worth of pinto beans during dinner the night before and you’re knees to ears deep in your last rep of leg press and you can’t help but let the most audible rip of flatulence in history go in front of the entire gym. I failed that rep due to laughter!

Honestly I enjoy the pain from lifting. I wouldn’t consider myself a masochist but there’s nothing better than the burning sensation of going beyond failure and pushing your muscles to the max.
All muscles or certain muscles? I don’t enjoy the burning sensation from sit-ups.
I don't feel the burning when I do curls , even when I curl to failure. My arms just feel stiff as fuck.
ik this is an older video by Sean but this was genuinely helpful.

I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable as it pertains to physical fitness and growing size and doing it safely, however, Sean I believe is really helping me make some good changes for the future as I work past 50 this year
This was eye opening, especially the anxiety. I thought it was just general anxiety... Didn't know other people felt that before difficult lifts.
Seems like Sean has upped his youtube game in the last few months. I've been watching much more after kinda forgetting about him. He seems more confident and purposeful. Good job! (Or maybe I was just not getting notifications or something!)

On the last few reps (especially in the later sets) I was genuinely not comfortable. I always enter leg day with some sort of optimism but when I start doing the lifting I get pretty stressed in between sets and sometimes start to question my existence toward the end of a hard set.

This is a real motivational video. STAY HARD
