I really like that you suggest things to show. I’m sorry I didn’t see your request earlier. If it helps I will put it on the to do list at least for others as well.
Great video. At 3:07, I'm curious what the technique is to fix the long horizontal crack at the bottom-left of the video. I assume you either just use caulk with sand already in it (something like Mor-Flexx?) or should the crack be opened larger and then fill in the now-larger crack with stucco?
Hi. Thanks for checking out my vids. You are on the right track with using a sanded caulking and paint. A crack patched with regular stucco will just crack again. Also if there is no water getting in, you might want to consider leaving the crack alone. It’s sometimes better to just leave the cracks alone as the crack may come back then what do you have? A crack that looks like someone tried to fix but the crack is an engineering issue that will continue to crack due to the moving of structure and expansion and contraction between dissimilar materials
great job. It's the same job as me, so it appeals to me. Good to used the green floot to mold the new joint with the old wall. I subscribe to your channel and I will watch your other videos. Hello from Canada, Quebec. Escuse my english is little bad.
Hi Ken, I have a stucco house, no weep screed, I believe with dash finish. I am planning on putting in a weep screed, patching everything, then painting the house. I want to make sure that after the new paint job the repair is not noticeable. Would you recommend 3 coats (scratch, brown, and finish) using this Fast Set? Thanks in advance.
More videos please. Interested in learning how to do Santa Barbra Mission Finish. I hear quite a few pros are now mixing a small amount of fine sand to help prevent cracking- obviously not as smooth as the original mission finish but an interesting alternative. Any thoughts?
Hi Ron. Adding fine sand to prevent cracking? If you want to prevent cracking, use something besides stucco. Like vinyl siding or maybe metal. Adding fine sand is not going to prevent stucco from cracking. We just finished a home with SB mission finish . We did the home about three years ago, but the LNU fire burned the granny flat. Listen SB mission finish is a beautiful finish. But it will crack, thats a fact of life right? Yes. So If someone is concerned about cracking, I suggest using acrylic stucco. But there is a trade off right? Acrylic inhibits cracking. But it is flat in appearance, like it was painted. After all, acrylic stucco is just paint sand and glue in a bucket. You could stain it to look like regular stucco as well to enhance the appearance. You could add acrylic glue to regular stucco to minimize cracking, but it will burn (mar). The variables go on and on. I have a mission finish sample I am preparing right now in the yard. Hit subscribe so you dont miss it, I will try to get to it this week. Cheers! Ken
Hey Ken. Great video. I need to do stucco repairs around new windows in social. I’ve used Eisenwall. Should I just use rapid set stucco mix that already has the sand? Should I scratch it before I do the brown? In your video you use the same material for the finish/texture coat but the instructions for Eisenwall say not to use it for a finish coat because it has to be 3/8”. What product should I use? Or can I just float out the brown coat to get some aggregate out if it looks close enough to the original stucco? Thanks!
Hey Timothy, I like your last suggestion the best. Try to use what’s on the wall and start by spreading it kind of tight. Then apply a sponge to achieve the desired results. You might have to use the trowel again to flatten out some spots I don’t know but Hope that work. Cheers
Hi Robert, I’m interested in the finished look and what the old style looks like. Would it be possible to get some pictures of it? Thanks for checking in.
I have a question, can you stucco over painted stucco? I have a window and door that both need a redo and floated better so the repair doesn’t show as bad but the stucco is already been painted. My plan was to pressure-wash the area, brush off any loose stucco, add the new stucco and float it out further so it will blend in better.
Absolutely you can stucco over a painted surface. Just add about 8 ounces of white glue to a 5 gallon bucket of finish material. Mix the finish material with water first until it’s kind of thick and then add the glue. Let the mix set after you add the glue for about five minutes and then sting it with the drill. Another way is to Roll on weld Crete before you apply finish.
Thanks for the video. Going to attempt to just patch cracks and places where the stucco has buckled. Nothing major. Just wondering how long you wait before you floated with the green sponge?
Did you have to sand off any of existing stucco around replacement window before you started? I have 15 windows replaced and waiting for stucco guy to show up. Next time ill only do 5 windows at a time-- what a nightmare with cement dust on everything !!
You can water blast, using a garden hose and then use a broom to clean the wall. After that add 1 gallon of white glue the add mixed kind per bag of stucco finish. Use a scraper tool to scrape off any loose paint before applying the material. You can also roll glue on the wall and then apply the finished material while the glue is tacky, but not wet.
I’m needing to replace my windows and I have stucco walls and the texture is about the same as what you’re doing there. Could I take that same mud and turn that knockdown stucco into a smooth stucco with a color coat?
Wouldn’t hurt I didn’t in this video when I was younger everything got a bonding agent but since I’m older there are more important things and I’m confident and moving forward without a bonding agent

Sorry one more question, I'm about to go to home depot to grab some materials but I guess I'm a little confused about the 60 min construction paper for the lath? Is that the same as the double backed paper metal wire lath? Is one better to use than the other? Or is doing a double layer of 60 min lath paper and then stapling the wire mesh lath a better system?
hi sorry for late respond. Both of the systems you describe are good. The 60 minute is a good paper but standard grade d is good but it tears easier. You could also use roofing paper but it’s kind of heavy but you get my drift. You could also use just peel and stick window flashing. Sometimes you don’t have to peel off the paper if it’s to hard to do. Another way is to shove the peel and stick in the joint then put your wire on to hold it in place start at the bottom and work towards the top of the window. Best
I had couple handyman cover the door and replacing the window but after couple months the joint cracks and make a line so I am not sure what they did wrong? I am guessing they didn't leave the mesh out so the old and new one can bond well.
Its common regardless. Its inside the system. If your handy men were plastering over a solid block wall, it would not have cracked unless there were cracks in the block. But going over wood construction, we typically break the stucco to have a jagged edge before stucco is applied. But it will most often crack anyway. When we make a saw cut and apply stucco without a jagged edge, we get a straight crack as opposed to a jagged crack. The jagged edge is an attempt tp provide a better bond for the stucco. But with expansion and contraction within the system the stucco joint will fail. Its not their fault unless they didn’t tie the wire together the old with the new. Here is your remedy...Caulk and paint. You cannot patch a crack with more stucco, it just doesn’t work that way. Thanks for checking out my videos..Ken
