You have a lot of LUMIXs!!! I just came back from a holiday to Japan and Taiwan and it was a hard decision which camera to take 😂 I was really tempted to take my a7cr or leica Q but end up took the s9 with 18-40 and sigma 45mm as my main camera, shot a lot of photos and videos and very happy with it. Also brought insta 360 go3/go3s and kandao qoocam3 ultra. I also brought a gx7 but that was mainly my son’s camera 😂
Thanks, Richard! Sorry I missed your message mate. You're jet setting around all the time! Well done :). I do have a few too many LUMIX cameras, the GH6 is most likely hitting eBay pretty soon and I'll eventually cave and perhaps try the A7C II or something similar :). Wait I think you have more cameras than I do! haha
@@jasontaycs7195 travel is inheritantly unpredictable, so when you sit in your hotel room trying to decide what to take and you miss a moment because you left the other system behind, you'll kick yourself. You will also kick yourself if you carry two packs of gear all day and find out you only end up using a pancake and range-finder style camera from your M43... I've shot inpromtu wedding photos for people while on Vacation because their local wedding photographer showed up with a POS camera... you never know what will happen.
mft all the way 🤘it’s light and the g9ii and gh7 are so good now. would love to see how the sigma 16mm works with those newer camera bodies, thanks for this walkthrough!
Thanks Shane, great topic. I spent 9 weeks in Greece this year and I took lots of camera gear; but I mainly used my OM-5 and an Olympus 17mm f1.2. Great photos. Not too heavy, but the f1.2 lens is heavy for M43rds gear. When I got back, I bought a 2nd hand OM-1 and it is a beautiful camera, but it is MUCH heavier than my OM-5 (which is now my EDC). So, if I was going back to Greece for 9 weeks, which camera would I take? I would take the OM-1 because it is simply a better camera. That is my advice, take the camera that is simply the better quality photography camera.
I just bought the GX9 again. Had it before and sold it because of my GX800 and G9. But both are not perfect for travelling. The GX9 is. Great camera! My favorite lenses are: 9mm (filming in low light) 15mm 1.7 (the rendering is unique) 45mm 1.8 (People) 75mm 1.8 (events) mFT is so underrated. No other system has such great lenses. Seriuosly, I had then all...
My travel kit (several week long bicycle trips) is the G9-II with 12-60/2.8-4 the 12mm/1.4 for low light and the 9mm/1.7. I also have the Insta360 X4 as action cam. I prefer the possibility to re-frame in post so I don't have to get the frame perfect in camera. I have a very good clamp and a long selfie stick that is invisible in the shots. Both work with a lot of friction and can be moved while riding, so I can get easy shots from different angles. The Wireless Go can be mounted to the X4 invisible so I get good sound directly in the shot and can talk while riding. The GH7 is obviously better but I don't need the fan and the high end codecs for what I do. So the G9-II is as good as the GH7 for my use case and it's smaller and lighter.
The GH7. Video or photographs 📸 its my fit 1for any needs accompanied with a auto focus wide angle and an a auto focus telephoto lens 100 to 300 zoom and Cobra 3 monopod. Any possible scenario can be covered.
I recently went to NYC for a week of street photography. I just purchased a Fuji X100VI and anticipated bringing that camera with me. In the end I opted for the GX9 with the PL15 and kit 12-60lenses because of the small size and low weight. While in NYC I stumbled upon a GX85 for $300 and bought it as a birthday gift. I love my GX 85 and 9. Hoping LUMIX puts the G9ii guts and weather sealing into the S9 body. Wouldn’t that be something. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I’m having an anxiety attack just thinking about it. I would probably try to stay with one lens mount, BUT, I often end up with multiple so I can cover them in my videos when I return. GH7 looks really interesting too, I don’t think I could resist taking that one to give it a proper test.
I’ve had the G9II with me on a couple of trips this year with some primes. I would have been fine with just the 15mm most of the time. Have a Ricoh GRIII as well, I just don’t enjoy using it as much, but it’s great as a b-camera so I don’t have to swap lenses. I’ve been resisting the 12-35 because of how much I like the 15mm, but once a good deal comes around, I’m getting one. Ideally I’d want an updated GM1/GM5 as a second body, so fingers crossed!
@ The 12-35 is sharper, faster, constant aperture, less distortion, than the 12-60 kit lens. The 12-35 mk1 is also already twice the price. The 12-60 is already at F4 at 25mm, that is a big difference. The 12-60PL is too expensive imo so I haven‘t really looked at it. I‘ll honestly probably just stick with the primes, but if I was going to get a zoom, the 12-35 would be it.
Ultimate travel M43 kit is OM5 + 12-45mm. It's small enough and still great picture quality and weather sealed. So great for traveling. I can take some small prime lens like 15 1.7 or 17 1.8 with and it's everything i want...
All too big for me…maybe not the S9, depending on what lenses you carry. I’m usually off on long hikes (20km +) so both volume and weight are key. Usually an action camera and often a Sony Rx100Vii or my g9 (which is often too big for long trips). For me a camera and two lenses should ideally be around 1.1kg. Different tools for different needs…so many great choices today. Enjoy your trip! Look forward to some of your travel video and photos.
El Dudderini, I could never travel with 5+kg allocation to camera gear. if you want all fun to be killed, this is the way to do it. I just went to New York with circa 1.1kg of camera gear, OM5+ PL 15 1.7 + zuiko 45 1.8 + Pana GX800 w/ 7 artisans 18mm 6.3 cap lens. The technically best pics came off the OM-5. The really best pics came of the viewfinderless GX800 with the MF cap lens. Run it in silent shutter mode, no af noise with manual lens, fits in the pocket etc. That is the S9 in shrunken form, with the caveat of , oh, the m4/3 sensor. Hey Panasonic, why not make an S9s with an EVF and the pump out a decent 35mm pancake, yeah everyone would be happy👍
i think we should own both. in usual case scenario full frame work excellently but situations like food photography, diorama photography less shallow depth of fields much favorable on results
Just a quick look at potentially what is coming with me on a trip very soon. I am leaning toward bringing matching sensors/lenses. What would you take for a two camera setup and why? :) - Shane
Having switched from the GH4 to the S5 Mk II, I wonder if I shouldn't have bought the G9 Mk II. That, and the Olympus 12-100mm f/4.0 would be a great travel combination. Using the S5 Mk II, I wonder if I should go to the gym, but it works well.
My only camera currently is an OM-1, and as someone who loves shooting wildlife, my 'everyday carry' lens is a 100-400 :D My go-to kit is the body, 100-400, 12-100/4, and maybe a prime or two. I have the Lumix/Leica 9/1.7 and 25/1.4 ii, as well as a Meike 50/0.95
I like the FX3 and Sigma 28-45mm but it is a bit heavy. I've also found it attracts unwanted attention sometimes since the size of the lens is a bit conspicuous. And I have a microphone and other things that take up backpack space, so I usually end up taking the G9ii (or GH5S for low light). The lenses are so much easier when you are traveling and have other things in your backpack. Panasonic Leica 12-35mm f/2.8 and 9mm f/1.7 (or 12mm f/1.4) are epic from a size / weight perspective. If you still have your GH5s the dual native iso makes some of the slower lenses pretty versatile too!
Selfishly, I would love to see how the 12-35mm f/2.8 rolls with the GH7. More sensibly, you should take the S5 ii paired with the S9, and share the glass between the two cameras. Your back will thank you!
Shane, when I travelled this year with Qatar, I was allowed 7kg carry on + a personal bag. And they did not include the personal bag with the 7kg. So, I packed 2 MFT camera + 4 lenses in my personal bag and 7kg carry on.
I have done many trips with my crop factor body, full frame body and several lenses plus laptop etc. I have done three day trips with racing kyaks down rivers with long telephoto and body plus tent and food etc. People make a meal out of nothing.
I would take full-frame but I never know how scanners will affect the emulsions, so I take my only digital system: micro four thirds. I'm never going anywhere without my GH7 now. Quick Q: am I crazy for disabling my GH7's mechanical shutter? My GH4's shutter broke before and now I'm so scared to break the GH7's. TBH that part of the S9 doesn't dealbreak for me...
Love all your Lumix equipment. Just got the GH7 and already love it more over the GH6. Regarding action cams maybe you should check out the DJI Action 5 Pro - you may like it ;-)

I feel like I'm making a mistake, heading overseas for a month in Japan soon, current plans are my OM-1 with the trio of f2.8 zooms for dedicated shooting days, and the 8mm f1.8 pro fisheye for every temple we head to. On non -dedicated shooting days, EDC is the Pen-F with the 20mm f1.4 for street, 9-18mm for wide, 75mm f1.8 prime. Finally, my Full-Spectrum converted Pen E-P7 with those same three lenses to shoot infrared around snow in rural Japan. Almost certainly too much kit, but can't work out what to leave out! Help!
If you have a zoom, leave out the primes unless you really want one, I find myself hardly ever switching lenses when I am away, but if there's a prime you need that's small and light pack it incase as long as it doesn't overlap with the zoom. (that's my thinking at least)
If you're mostly shooting photos the 12-60mm Leica is the way to go, especially for travel stuff. The range is great. For video, I chose the 12-35mm mostly for the F2.8

Never go cross-bayonet (two systems) when travelling... trust me (25+ countries travel photographer).

Hey mate, I'm Thinking of buying a camera mostly for video. Thinking about the gh7 (for a smaller camera) or the s5ii. What would you choose ?
Do you currently have any lenses for either system?
@GeekyNerdyTechy nope. That's what makes me doubt
Lx100 mk3 with PDAF or whatever very compact body mft with pdaf (which doesn't exist)
Sounds like you need to pick up a GM or GX body as a walk about m43 camera to complement the GH7

I’m just deciding between the Panasonic 12-35 or the 12-60. I was interested seeing your enthusiasm for the 12-35.
If you're mostly shooting photos the 12-60mm Leica is the way to go, especially for travel stuff. The range is great. For video, I chose the 12-35mm mostly for the F2.8
There is no perfect one. But the near perfect one would be a mix of Sony a6000, Panasonic S9, Nikon FM, Nikon ZF. Nikon, Panasonic or Sony needs to make a classic mechanicly inclined rangefinder style camera for around 1000 euros. Raw video(4k and slow mo)and raw photography should be the only choice.

GH7. You basically said you'll won't need those big ff apertures, so why bother taking them? Then just any other M43 body, pref one thats goibg to give the same look in video to make editing faster. G9 ii?

what camera is this
The LUMIX S9?

I mean, S9 is really cool but then 20-60? You'll need to have your ND on it permanently in those conditions. The GH7/G9II can operate properly without an ND in pretty much any full sunlight conditions.
