I always say that George Orwell is my favourite author... And I've only read Animal Farm and a handful of essays! I think his writing just resonated so much, like I knew that everything I would ever read by him would be utter perfection. You're not alone in this dilemma!
Hahaha I love your attitude towards Austen. Also, your perseverance in continuing to read her books... I've tried to read Emma about three times and just. can't. do it. On the topic of Salinger - read Franny and Zooey! It actually rivals Catcher in the Rye as one of my favourite books. Personally, I feel I really need to read some Colm Toibin.
If you like Salinger, you really must check out his other short stories/novellas about the Glass family (Seymour from 'Perfect Day for Bananafish' is the eldest of the Glass children), Franny & Zooey, and Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenters & Seymour, an Introduction.
The Catcher in the Rye is one of my favorite books as well and I find it hilarious how much you don't like Jane Austen. I tried reading Pride & Prejudice a while ago but slipped into a coma from being so bored, even though I really wanted to like it. I did enjoy the movie though, with Keira Knightley. I will try to finish it one day. I feel like I'm rambling. Kay.
Master and Margarita is my favorite book slash favorite thing ever. So I always say Bulgakov is my favorite writer even though that's the only book I've read by him. I also love my struggling artists. In that sense, it doesn't get much better than creative person in Stalinist Russia.
I was required to read "The Scarlet Letter" in high school (well-nigh forty-five years ago). My classmates writhed in agony as they pretended to read it. I was fascinated, but the closing line confused me so much it was like a punch in the face. "Gules"? What the hell is "gules"? I don't get it! (Had to look it up.) I could relate, though, to the bone-deep clerical hypocrisy.
I never understood why The Scarlet Letter gets so much hate, personally, I think The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane should be more widely hated. I had to read it for my AP Lit class in my senior year and I was one of two people that actually finished it.
Your editing is hilarious! I'm looking forward to read The Scarlet Letter, for some reason I always thought it sounded great. Hm. And Animal Farm. For me it's a masterpiece.
I had to read Scarlet Letter in high school and because I was a twat I didn't really read it..I want to reread or well read it so I'm glad you loved it . The Magician's Nephew is my favorite of the Chronicles of Narnia that I've read so far. Gah and now Slapstick will probably by my next Vonnegut! I am adding The Testament of Mary to my TBR NOW! Thanks sir..
I had no idea people hated The Scarlet Letter. I bought it a few weeks ago thinking it was a must-read... The Testament of Mary sounds really interesting!
If you haven't done so already, please do a Google search for "chuck palahniuk guts" to find an mp3 of the author reading his short story to a book store audience. Outrageous and not to be missed!
If you liked Animal Farm, you will love 1984! And personally I always though the Magician's nephew was the best of the Narnia series. Looking forward to see how you find the rest.
10 books wow! I'm also trying to work on the the list of books my fav. Author(s) wrote. Most youtubers got some sorta catch phrase for an ending or like a weird endscreen but oh well I like your randomness
What a glorious combination of books! All of them I want to read. I have to agree with you about Persuasion, I love Jane Austen, but Persuasion had me pretty bored. The only good part was the wonderful letter Captain Wentworth wrote. I MUST read The Testament of Mary. I appreciate your intelligent, thoughtful videos so much!
Fantastic review wrap up! I totally agree about not liking the Doyle novels anywhere as much as the short stories. The only Doyle novel I enjoyed was "Hound of the Baskervilles" which was stunning. The other three Sherlock novels were just bland and boring. But so many of the short stories were brilliant. Yah, someone who loves "The Scarlet Letter." One of my faves.
After watching this video this morning I just had to buy The testament of Mary and I did just that. I have read it and it was absolutely amazing. I totally agree with what you said and had the same reaction to it.
I can't pick one favorite author. That's just not possible. Considering the types of books you read, I would highly suggest "Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit" by Jeanette Winterson. I'm in the middle of it right now and the influence of it is just incredible.
When I get asked about my favourite author, I always say Dostoevski, eventhough I've only read Crime and Punishment, but I loved it soooo much. with the possible exception of Don Quixote, I've never felt like every word and page I read was just pure art. Can't wait to get to Bros Karamazov
I think The Scarlet Letter is so hated because a lot of people are forced to read it in school - I'm one of those people! I really should try rereading it someday because the people who like it seem to really like it.
I read Fight Club in september and I really liked, the movie is also good! I always wanted to read 'The Catcher in the Rye' but it's kind of hard to find the book in my country, so I will probably buy on amazon. Animal Farm is one of my favorite books ever, I haven't read 1984 yet and I feel really shameful for that... I tried to read Narnia a few times, but I think it's not for me and that's weird because I really enjoyed the movie. I love your videos AND you love Lorde, so you're even better now hahahaha...
rewatching old bazpierce videos because i don't have a life
Dana Galvez same
same
Moi aussi ^^
Even that made me realise when I read this comment.
I always say that George Orwell is my favourite author... And I've only read Animal Farm and a handful of essays! I think his writing just resonated so much, like I knew that everything I would ever read by him would be utter perfection. You're not alone in this dilemma!
Bazpierce The paragraph describing Hester Prynne is by far one of my favorite introductions. Ever.

Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger is his another novel!
"Oh, Sugar." Just died from all of that fluffy sweet cuteness. :)
The end of the video was just perfect. Very elemental.
I really, really need to read Salinger's short stories!

I loved the testament of Mary too! :) And I have to read Vonnegut this year!
I definitely agree with you about Sherlock Holmes. Anytime I read the short stories I absolutely loved it, but in novel form it seemed to just DRAG.
I was required to read "The Scarlet Letter" in high school (well-nigh forty-five years ago). My classmates writhed in agony as they pretended to read it. I've only ever read 80 pages of Slaughter House 5 and yet I still had a good idea by what you meant by it just being Vonnegut..
I never understood why The Scarlet Letter gets so much hate, personally, I think The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane should be more widely hated. I had to read it for my AP Lit class in my senior year and I was one of two people that actually finished it.
do you have a review of catcher in the rye?
Loved your reviews! I also miss your Barry bakes videos :D
Your editing is hilarious! I'm looking forward to read The Scarlet Letter, for some reason I always thought it sounded great. Hm. And Animal Farm. For me it's a masterpiece.

Totally recommend Franny & Zooey by Salinger. I think you'll love it. I'm not a big Austen fan either.
You are one of my favorite booktubers! This video is a deciding factor.
Please excuse my ignorance but the WHAT ratio is 50:50? (When he's talking about the Salinger book.)
Hit and miss with the short stories
I had no idea people hated The Scarlet Letter. I bought it a few weeks ago thinking it was a must-read...

ugh you're so smart.
Also check out Franny by Salinger. Woo!
I love kurt god. I'm always in shock after reading his books
Slapstick is my favorite novel of Vonnegut's, and I've read his whole catalogue.
I think that ending was perfect, actually. If/ when I start making videos, I intend to mirror your distinct "existential angst" coda style. :)
The editing in this was different to your other videos I liked it :3

Have you read a Tale For The Time Being? It's genial
Scarlet Letter YES. It is one of my favorite novels as well! Amazing book!
read "franny & zoey" as well as "raise high the roof beam carpenters" & "Seymour- an introduction". Salinger's Glass saga is a luvely saccharine mess.
I can't pick one favorite author. That's just not possible. Considering the types of books you read, I would highly suggest "Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit" by Jeanette Winterson. I'm in the middle of it right now and the influence of it is just incredible.

I'm going to have to find the J.D Salinger.I liked The Catcher In The Rye.
I think The Scarlet Letter is so hated because a lot of people are forced to read it in school - I'm one of those people! I really should try rereading it someday because the people who like it seem to really like it.
Like the "update".
I quickly decided that John Steinbeck was my favorite author after reading The Moon is Down. Sometimes you just know.
I loved slapstick!
OMG do u have blue-green eyes?
I enjoyed your video.
Don't give me that face when you're talking about Persuasion.
lol....Good sections! I'm am actually a big Jane Austen fan, sorry you didn't like the book.
