  • Second half of my road from Erbil to Slemani. One of the hardest rides since the start of my journey, as the road is extremely dangerous because many drivers force me off the road in order to avoid getting killed on a car accident.

    I would say the problem lies in the fact they are fairly big roads where drivers are likely not used to discovering a bicycle.
    It might be a bit much but you could consider a secondary flagpole on a locking pivot which can be lowered horizontally to force them further away from you.
    Just a thought as am kean for you to stay safe out there and never give up buddy.

      Thank you Tilly. Regarding the helmet, I often ask myself whether I should use it or not. As I have three wheels, I don't really risk falling, so for me, the main risk is a collision with another vehicle, and in this case, I am not really sure if a helmet would be of much help... but I am probably wrong.

    I was a college student in Erbil and Im from Slemani, I used to drive my car in that road for 4 years. Yes that road is very dangerous even if you drive a car. And the reason behind your bad experience with the road is that its not designed for cycling and actually here in Kurdistan no one goes on that road with a 🚲 .. so forgive the drivers

      I do understand that this road is not designed for cyclists, and that drivers are not used at all to cyclists, but the issue is that some drivers were playing with my life... Some drivers were overtaking despite me coming in front of them, and I was several times forced to go off road to avoid a frontal collision with the car overtaking. For me, these drivers blatantly tried to kill me, and I cannot understand how can someone care more about going as fast as possible from point A to point B, than the life of a cyclist. Sorry, but I can't forgive people who were ready to kill me just because they did not want to drive slower...

    this is so cool. could i ask though, at any point in time did you feel unsafe considering the countries past? i know things are much calmer there now, and the media tends to blow things out of proportion. but did a thought like that ever cross your mind?

    • @KinoYves
      @KinoYves  2 роки тому +5

      Indeed, the image given by medias is biased, but not entirely wrong either. I did feel very unsafe in the Beqaa valley in Lebanon, where I met the wrong people, they robbed me, and I had to escape the valley to avoid getting robbed much more. Also in Kurdistan, I did feel very unsafe on the road between Erbil and Slemani, because of the careless drivers. And there is a war going on right now between the PKK and Turkey in some areas of Iraqi Kurdistan, and the PKK is using landmines in these areas, and a Danish cyclist was killed by a landmine two or three days ago on a secondary road near the Turkish border, so I would say that, between the very dangerous driving, and the very recent landmines in the Duhok governorate, I think that cycling in Kurdistan is very very unsafe.
