      I'm still torn! I watched on my LG CX55 HDR and yes, the 4K is fantastic. But there's something more cinematic about the 1080p...it's like watching a clip form a Jason Bourne movie or something. I quite like it and think I'll be trying out some proper cinematic shots using both resolutions.

      There are wild campers all along the 7 mile length of the Loch from the castle back to the cafe area. As I was driving back, I wanted to stop and go have a coffee with all of them as they sat on their camp chairs at their tents just watching the sun drop right below the hills as the loch turned black.

    Most watch UA-cam on a small screen such as a phone, tablet or laptop, how many actually watch UA-cam on a large 4k TV?
    Great video and comparison, what resolution and frame rate timeline did you put the videos on in editing?
    I upload all my youtube video in 1080p, mostly for ease and speed of editing! 4k video files take up so much space also, as I record and archive all my flight footage as a record like a visual flight log, saving them all in 4k would use up much more memory.

      Here down in Llandasiliogogo in the recent fine weather I have been sending 'Buzby' up and about to see the astonishing ancient hillforts and other ruins , some literally crumbling away from cliffs. You have done really well, I must congratulate you on your informative and entertaining videos an inspiration to us all!. Not a hillfort but if you get a moment please feel free to visit one of my first attempts at cinematic footage from deep in the heart of rural west Wales, where can be found hidden gems, I have got some great stuff to put up in the near future. Beautiful scenery and a good time of the day to film with the changing light conditions. Unless your watching the footage on a large 4K monitor or TV I honestly don’t think there’s much difference in the quality. 1080p is more than good enough for iPhone, iPad, laptop etc. I noticed that the new Mavic Air 2S even has a 5k option, but I hate to think what you’d need to pay for a 5K screen to watch that footage. A very relaxing way to start my Sunday morning, thanks as always Robert.

      I just watched it in 1080 and 4k on the TV. 4K just looks better in both but that is probably more to do with scaling as this video was uploaded in 4K. This means that the 1080 portion of the video would have to be up-scaled to 4K.
      A true test would be uploading the video twice, once for the 4K recording and the other for the 1080p recording.
      I think the idea behind the 5K video is so that you can crop the video in post processing to 4K or 1080 without losing any quality. Technically giving you optical zoom.

    • @WindsweptRobert
      @WindsweptRobert  3 роки тому +1

      I always preferred 4K until I saw my own footage here. I'm thinking now that maybe the time of day and that the sun was just sinking may have made the 1080 just look better somehow than the 4K. The 4K looked very harsh here. However, in the other video I did at Loch Doon ( ua-cam.com/video/PGdMCL9Vt7c/v-deo.html ) the 4K looks spectacular. That was filmed in the afternoon when the sun was high.

    Its the time of day, magic hour is soft and smooth and shouldn't be razor sharp. 24 fps creates a natural blur as well so shooting in 4k is a bit redundant. UA-cam compression doesn't help either. I'm watching on a 48 Samsung 32 inch monitor. They both look excellent but for different reasons, HD version is softer and easier to watch,4K version sharp. Pick your flavor. As has been mentioned already there are advantages to shooting 4k, if you are adding motion and zooming. and there are disadvantages in file size handling and also storage. Here it depends on final use. my personal view is HD1080P is perfectly fine for You Tube video. If you were shooting for some professional viewing then 4k might be more appropriate. Then if you were a professional would you be using a Mini2? I love your videos in any flavor Robert, you never disappoint. Scenery and music pure magic, and very informative also. Good and honest and straight. Stay well.

      The cropping/panning/zooming makes the 4K a better choice, but I'm also now thinking that the light or time of day has something to do with it too - the 4K looks very harsh here, while the 1080 looks lovely - and I'm watching on a LG CX55

    Hi Robert, As most people have said, unless you are watching on a 4k screen you cant tell the difference. the difference for us as film/video makers, having the ability to crop and zoom without losing quality is a big win. Even on my 5k 27" iMac monitor I had difficulty telling the clips apart so I did the screen grab thing, stuck them into Photoshop and compared them. Quite a difference obviously and looking back I can see the cinematic difference that 1080p has over 4k with motion. However, it would be interesting to compare two videos, one in 1080p without an ND filter and the other in 4k with. Varying strengths of ND filter would certainly add to the test so guess what I'm just ordering ;-)

    Nice again Robert. Lassie's looking good in the Saltire. About the 1080 P or 4K, i think its all about on what you watch it. It would make a big difference on a device what ca handle 4K. But compare it to the old stuff we used to film with, even full HD is marvelous :P Big thing though, filming in 1080 is really less data so yur memcard will last longer. Choises... Question, in 1080P - why not put it in 60 fps ? I always think that makes a difference too, less blur... but i could be wrong. I am watching on iPad Pro and really can’t tell the difference (not surprising as UA-cam is outputting as 1080p). Personally I think filming in 4K for general consumption/UA-cam is only worth the hassle of handling the much larger files if zoom/crop may be added in editing. Personally unless it is important subject I am filming, I tend to go in between and use the 2.7k setting as a compromise.

    One thing to bear in mind is that 4K gives you a little more scope for editing later because you can crop in a lot more without compromising the quality too much.
    BUT - the flip side is that you can get higher FPS with smaller resolutions. I believe an update in january allows for 60fps shooting for 2.7k video, which may be a nice in-between value as it allows you good resolution on the larger screens, but still retains flexibility if you want to crop in on a particular spot of the footage.
    I tend to use my Mini 2 at 4K for shooting scenery where the framerate isn't a huge concern, and 1-2k for shooting faster moving subjects where the framerate becomes noticable. :)
    Hope this helps! =D

      @@WindsweptRobert It could be the light, you could be right there. At the end of the day the camera sensor is only a little thing, with a tiny lens gathering the light. I think they do really well with the quality that we can get out of them. I guess that as time goes on and we get used to the limits, the decision of 1080 or 4k maybe based on the days weather and available light.

    My first drone (bought two months ago, now somewhere at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean) shot in 4K but it was a cheapie, so a lot more matters than so-called resolution. If a shot is beautiful, you don't go counting the mosquitos in it. Now my second day with a Mini 2! And heartily enjoying this channel, Robert. It's a personal thing, but to me what you're doing captures the spirit of what the Mini 2 is all about. The 'perfect' shot circling a tower or whatever in so-called cinematic splendour as though emulating a professional cameraman can have the soul sucked out of it, and the technique of the shot can be the sole reason for it, which makes it pretty ho-hum. Yet to get out into the landscape and relish it like this makes it so much more enriching an experience, personally. So it's not the 'shot' per se; it's the whole experience that does it for me. I feel a part of that landscape with you there, and a joy to feel your joy with you. Lovely stuff mate.

    Hey Robert, lovely wee video! I got my Mini 2 a couple of weeks ago and have been flying it around some scenic locations in and around Glasgow which I showed in my latest review, but I must say you've inspired me to give mine a name too! RE: the resolution, I do definitely think the 4K looks better/sharper. I'm watching on a 27" monitor and the difference can be seen, but perhaps because I have a bit of a trained eye and was looking for it. Aside from the sharper image, one of the benefits of 4K you'll have over 1080p is of course the ability to crop in and scale without losing image quality. Don't forget that the 4K is also a nice 100mbps on the DJI Mini 2, so hopefully better quality and a bit easier to colour grade when you decide to do so in post.

    • @WindsweptRobert

I've just started to use the auto exposure on the m2 to my advantage and it's working out quite well so far, but I have so much to learn LOL. I think I will continue to film most (if not all) of my footage in 4K as this does give me a better option to crop and keep the quality, as you have said. Also, as we move on, more and more people will be buying better and better TVs and then the difference in resolution will become much more apparent to many more people :)

      @@WindsweptRobert Learning is all part of the fun and by the looks of it your drone flying skills are getting better in each video. Yes, the 4K works out better for crop but also looks EVEN better if it's downsized into a 1080p sequence or smaller screen. Cramming more pixels into a smaller space always looks sharper than trying to stretch out less pixels into a larger space.
      RE: the colour grading, since the Mini 2 only has one standard "out of the box" picture profile, you'll be able to achieve some fairly decent results with a bit of practice but won't be able to push the colours too far. Once you move into the world of shooting flat LOG profiles, it will blow your mind with the level of flexibility and retention of highlights/shadows - but baby steps! Interesting video and OMG the scenery you have is up there is stunning.
    I would say that most people view stuff on their smartphone and at that size you cant tell the difference, things are different when you use a monitor or large TV.
    My PC monitor is a 32" 4K monitor and I can clearly see that the 1080p footage is slightly "furry".
    Some people have smart TV's for viewing UA-cam on so if your telly is 80" then 4K will be considerably better than 1080p on that.
    BTW because this UA-cam video is 4K it means that your video editing software will have interpolated the 1080p footage to 4K so will be better than if you had done a separate 1080p video for comparison

    Watched this on my Samsung S20 and thought that in 1080p the shadow areas had more detail where the 4k was a bit darker, maybe just me though. Great footage and scenery 😀

      Thanks George. I like the 1080p a lot. Just looked nicer to my eye even though it wasn’t as crystal clear as the 4k

      That's a great comment, Steve, thanks very much. And you're right! Since getting my drone, I have discovered a new world that was right on my doorstep but never did see before. You should be a tester robert I've watched a few captain drone a thot was one of the best untill I seen your first video you blow captain drone out the water with your video.s I would back you as a tester 💯 you explain everything crystal clear about what your going to do in your video then you do the video and smash it right out the park but I think you have some photography knowledge about this I would bet you do I've rote down some of your advice on many video.s I watched over the weekend and will attempt to see if I can pull of a video like yours no gone to concentrate on it a will just add some music see how it gose from there if you see anything and think I could make it better by? Feel free to let me know and keep your videos coming i could watch them all day like a did on Saturday and watched 5 or 6 more on sunday will make sure to watch the rest of them soon 👍

    • @andyinglis8687

      You.d be a better tester than most I've seen you go in to every detail of what your about to do then let lassie lose and explain it a hundred times better than captain drone you have a very unique style and your commentary is spot on a think you have to apply to be a tester and if you do you.l be the top tester I've seen yit just different class 💯

    Morning Robert.
    I’m viewing this through a 58” 4K tv and I agree that 4k is the best format for that set up. Having said that if you are using a mobile platform 1080p is perfectly usable.
    What a beautiful part of Scotland to live in Robert and you have captured it superbly. Off to Aberdeen next month 🤞🤞🤞and my wee laddie will be on the trip.

      @WindsweptRobert  3 роки тому

      Thanks, Iain. I'm not so sure. I usually prefer 4k - by a mile - but this time, I am liking the 1080 more. I am now thinking it has something to do with the time of day it was filmed (8:30pm) and the sun was almost gone over the horizon. maybe. I dunno.

  • @247SH
    @247SH 3 роки тому +1

    I don’t have a 4K TV/monitor so 1080 is fine for me, however the scenery is making me want to travel your way. It takes me back to the couple of trips we had to Fort William when the children were toddlers. And there’s something deeply spiritual in the scenery.

    • @WindsweptRobert

      You'll be happy to hear that Fort William (and Ben Nevis, of course!) is on my video planner for this Summer. If there's a particular area you remember, let me know and I'll try to get some special footage of it :)

      Although I still have the SJRC F11 original, and then I bought that F11 4K version which needs a flight. Not been out with that one for while, might do that this week if I get home in time for sunset . I've got a hubsan zino black edition basic not the pro but had battery issues one swelled up during charging, and other wouldn't hold charge so I bought a Giffi battery which so far is spot on.
