I think it's pretty impressive how consistent the voice actors sound considering it's a localization done by several different companies. There's a solid idea of how all these characters sound, and some actors lean a little more into certain qualities than others, but they almost all feel like genuine interpretations of the characters. Lupin III really is Japan's equivalent to Scooby Doo. So many different series and OVAs, been going for over half a century, with hardly any continuity and the only constant being the characters.

I really loved Bob Bergen as Lupin in Cagliostro. I think that hands down Tommy Oliver plays the best zany Lupin, but Bob Bergen makes an excellently suave and sexy Lupin. Whoever played him in the English dub of Nostradamus did an excellent job as well. So did the actress for fujiko. I have a lot of thoughts and love for the English dubs of Lupin.

For the Japanese, I 'm going with Yasuo Yamada and Kanichi Kurita. Both of them had the right balance for the personality. Plus Kanichi tried to preserve some of the elements Yasuo brought to Lupin. :)
For the english, Tony Oliver. As far as the pitch energy and charisma, Tony got it, Sonny is the second for me since he didn't try to fix his voice too much. Most of the others, aside from David Hayter, try to fix the pitch and nasalize the tone. I've been watching the anime in English sub and noticed the performance differences.

You are correct about Sonny. His Lupin voice is mostly his natural voice. It's the same with Yasuo Yamada.

    English: Tony Oliver
    Japanese: The late Yasuo Yamada

  • @StoryTeller796

Nachi Nozawa: Sounds a bit too serious and not enough laid-backness that Lupin would later be better known for. Still a good enough Japanese voice for a Lupin pilot.
Yasuo Yamada: This is THE Japanese Lupin I like, this has just the right amount of crazy and teenage coolness I like to see from the character.
Toshio Furukawa: Definitely better at portraying a softer and more fun-loving Lupin.
Kanichi Kurita: Definitely Toshio's edgier and more sociopathic polar opposite.
William Dufris: I thought that this guy was too American, after all, isn't Lupin supposed to be mixed Japanese and French? Not a bad voice just like the Pilot's Voice, but I wouldn't want to return back to this guy unless I want a more American Lupin.
Bob Bergen: Perfect for Castle of Cagliostro Lupin, but this just screams Milo Thatch from Disney's Atlantis energy to me personally.
David Hayter: This is not a Lupin voice to me. This is more of a professional Knight in shining armor rather than Lupin.
Tom Clark: Poor Lupin impression. Still kind of Lupin, but incredibly muted.
Robin Robertson: Too much of a nerdy sound to his voice.
Sonny Strait: Not a bad voice, but it sounds occasionally like cheap branded cartoon Lupin rather than the real deal.
Keith Silverstein: Sounds way too much like a crime boss.
    Tony Oliver: Perfection.

    *0:08** ~ Nachi Nozawa*
Japanese VA who voiced Lupin in the initial unaired pilot short film _Rupan Sansei〈PILOT FILM〉_ [Lupin the Third ] (1969). In 1971, it was reworked into a second pilot film, using an all new VA cast, which was then picked up by Yomiuri Television, leading to Lupin the Third Part I (Green Jacket series).
    *0:38** ~ Yasuo Yamada*
Voiced Lupin in _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] TV series Part I (1971 to 1973 - Green Jacket series), Part II (1977 to 1980 - Red Jacket series), Part II (1984 to 1985 - Pink Jacket series), and the majority of the Lupin movies and TV specials in Japan. Japanese fans know him as the quintessential voice of Lupin. He is also well known in Japan as the voice of Kermit the Frog in *The Muppets* , and the voice of Clint Eastwood's characters in all English-dubbed Eastwood films.
    *1:10** ~ Toshi Furukawa*
Voiced Lupin in _Rupan Sansei Fūma Ichizoku no Inbō_ [ *Lupin III: The Plot of the Fūma Clan* ] film (1987). One-off hire because the production company was under budget constraints, and felt they could not afford to hire the regular VA cast at their usual salary. Yasuo Yamada in particular was extremely upset at being replaced. Again, due to budget constraints, the regular music composer, Yūji Ōno, was also replaced by a different composer, Kiyoshi Miyaura. Due to all these changes, the film had a poor reception in Japan.
    *1:30** ~ Kan'ichi Kurita*
Has voiced Lupin after the death of original VA Yasuo Yamada, in all *Lupin the Third* movies, TV specials, and the more recent TV series: _Rupan Sansei PART IV_ [Lupin the Third Part IV] set in Italy (2015 - 2016), _Rupan Sansei PART5_ [Lupin the Third Part 5] set in France (2018), and _Rupan Sansei PART6_ [Lupin the Third Part 6] set in the UK (2021 - 2022).
Kurita started off as a comedian showcasing his mimicry skills, including mimicking the voice of Lupin. He onced pranked Yasuo Yamada by leaving him a phone message pretending to be Lupin, and Yamada in turn left Kurita a voice mail using his own Lupin voice. Yamada was so impressed with Kurita's ability to mimic his Lupin voice perfectly, that when he became ill, he indicated his desire and blessing to pass on the torch of Lupin VA to Kurita, upon his own death. After Yamada passed away, Kurita accepted this new role with great honour.
    *2:00** ~ William Dufris*
Voiced Lupin (the character being renamed 'Wolf the Third' for copyright reasons) in the third English dub of _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] (1978) (later retitled in Japanese to _Rupan Sansei Rupan tai Kurōn_ [Lupin III: Lupin vs. the Clone]). This third English dub version was released by Manga Entertainment on VHS in the UK under the title *Lupin III: Secret of Mamo (1996)* .
He also voiced Lupin (again, renamed as 'Wolf') in the English dub of _Rupan Sansei Baibai Ribatī - Kiki Ippatsu!_ [Lupin III: Bye-Bye Liberty - Close Call!] (1989). Released by Manga Entertainment on VHS in the UK, under the title *Lupin III: Goodbye Lady Liberty (1996)* . Released by Discotek Media on DVD in North America, under the title *Lupin III: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty (2014)* .
    *2:19** ~ Bob Bergen*
Voiced Lupin (the character being renamed 'Wolf') in the first English dub of _Rupan Sansei Kariosutoro no Shiro_ [Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro] film (1979), produced by Streamline Pictures under the title *Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro* and released in the theatre *(1991)* , and later released by Orion Home Video on VHS in North America *(1992)* . There was an English misinterpretation of the phrase "Zenigata Keibu" (which means Inspector Zenigata) - this version refers to the character as Inspector Keibu Zenigata, as if 'Keibu' is his first name.
He also voiced Lupin (surprisingly for Streamline, the character was named 'Lupin', not 'Wolf') in the second English dub of _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] (1978) (later retitled in Japanese to _Rupan Sansei Rupan tai Kurōn_ [Lupin III: Lupin vs. the Clone]). This second English dub version was released by Streamline Pictures on VHS under the title *Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo (1995)* . Oddly, despite the lead character being allowed to keep his original name, most of the other main characters' names were changed into Western-sounding alternatives.
Streamline Pictures also produced two English dubs of episodes 145 and 155 of _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] Part 2 TV series, using Bob Bergen to voice Lupin. The episodes were distributed individually on VHS as *Lupin III: Tales of the Wolf (1994)* and together as *Lupin III's Greatest Capers (1995)* . Bergen says that he had originally intended to reprise his role as Lupin in the later Pioneer/Geneon dub, but chose not to because it was a non-union project.
    *2:47** ~ David Hayter*
Voiced Lupin (the character being allowed to keep the name 'Lupin') in the second English dub of _Rupan Sansei Kariosutoro no Shiro_ [Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro] film (1979). Released by Manga Entertainment in North America under the title *Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro* - on DVD *(2000)* , and again as a special edition DVD *(2006)* .
    *3:16** ~ Tom Clark*
Voiced Lupin (the character being allowed to keep the name 'Lupin') in the first English dub of _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] (1978) (later retitled in Japanese to _Rupan Sansei Rupan tai Kurōn_ [Lupin III: Lupin vs. the Clone]). This first English dub version was released by Frontier Enterprises for Japanese Airlines flights, under the title *Lupin III (1979)* . (Later English dub versions were known as 'Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo' and 'Lupin III: Secret of Mamo'.)
    *3:39** ~ Robin Robertson*
Voiced Lupin (the character being renamed 'Rupan' in English for copyright reasons) in the English dub of _Rupan Sansei Fūma Ichizoku no Inbō_ [Lupin III: The Plot of the Fūma Clan] film (1987). AnimEigo released it in North America under the title *Rupan III: The Fuma Conspiracy (1994)* . Discotek Media released it on DVD under the title *Lupin the 3rd: The Fuma Conspiracy (2007)* .
    *3:58** ~ Sonny Strait*
Voiced Lupin in the English dub versions of the following TV specials:
    ▪ _Moeyo Zantetsuken!_ [Burn, Zantetsuken!] (1994) under the title *Lupin III: Dragon of Doom (2003)* .
    ▪ _Warusā P38 〜In Gedenken an die Walther P38〜_ [Walther P38 ~In Memory of the Walther P38~] (1997) under the title *Lupin III: Island of Assassins (2005)* .
    ▪ _Honō no Kioku 〜Tokyo Crisis〜_ [Memories of the Flame ~Tokyo Crisis~] (1998) under the title *Lupin III: Tokyo Crisis (2005)* .
    ▪ _Ai no Da Kāpo 〜FUJIKO'S Unlucky Days〜_ [Da Capo of Love ~Fujiko's Unlucky Days~] (1999) under the title *Lupin III: The Columbus Files (2005)* .
    and the following TV series:
    ▪ _LUPIN the Third ~Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna~_ [Lupin the Third ~The Woman Called Fujiko Mine~] (2012), under the title *Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (2013)* .
    *4:18** ~ Keith Silverstein*
Voiced Lupin in the English dubs of three spinoff films films based on the TV series _LUPIN the Third ~Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna~_ [Lupin the Third ~The Woman Called Fujiko Mine~] (2012).
    ▪ First film: _LUPIN THE IIIRD Jigen Daisuke no Bohyō_ [Lupin the IIIrd: Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone] (2014) released by Discotek Media under the title *Lupin III: Jigen's Gravestone (2016)* .
    ▪ Second film: _LUPIN THE IIIRD Chikemuri no Ishikawa Goemon_ [Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon Ishikawa's Blood Spray] (2017) released by Discotek Media under the title *Lupin III: Goemon's Blood Spray (2019)* .
    ▪ Third film: _LUPIN THE IIIRD Mine Fujiko no Uso_ [Lupin III: Fujiko Mine's Lie] (2019) under the title *Lupin III: Fujiko's Lie (2020)* .
    *4:50** ~ Tony Oliver*
Voiced Lupin (using the name 'Lupin') in the fourth English dub of _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] (1978) (later retitled in Japanese to _Rupan Sansei Rupan tai Kurōn_ [Lupin III: Lupin vs. the Clone]). This fourth English dub was produced by Phuuz Entertainment, and released by Pioneer Entertainment on DVD in North America under the title *Lupin III: Secret of Mamoo (2003)* .
He most famously voiced Lupin in the English dub of _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] Part 2 TV series produced by Pioneer Entertainment, as well as the more recent series - Parts 4, 5, 6 - and various movies and TV specials.
The _Rupan Sansei_ [Lupin the Third] Part 2 TV series was licensed by Pioneer Entertainment (later renamed Geneon USA) for North America. The episodes were dubbed in English by Phuuz Entertainment, under the title *Lupin the Third (2003 - 2006)* . Due to potential controversy concerning an episode revolving around World War II war criminal Adolf Hitler, the episode that had originally been broadcast as Episode 3 in Japan was delayed until later in the English dub series. 79 of the original 155 episodes were dubbed and released in 15 volumes on DVD, from 2003 to 2006. Episodes 1 to 27 were broadcast on the Adult Swim TV channel. Unfortunately, Geneon lost the license to the series before the remaining episodes could be dubbed into English.

I think, after a while, if they were repeated, you could’ve just stuck with the English names of the Parts or Movies you highlighted. Also, judging from his reaction, I’m guessing Yamada was even willing to work for free if it meant voicing Lupin in The Fuma Conspiracy.

Do you know why TMS couldn't pay the usual voice actors and the composer at their usual wages? Because they blew the entire budget on the animation trying to recapture that "Cagliostro" magic. Yamada was *really* pissed, and (for some god forsaken reason) thought it was Monkey Punch's decision despite the fact that the man had nothing to do with the anime productions most of the time. As a result, their friendship became distant, and they never made up before Yamada's unfortunate passing.

    The Japanese voices fit nicely.
    But for me:
    1. Tony Oliver: He has the most energy and is what I hear when reading the manga
    2. David Hayter: He did a great job with the Cagliostro film and it's my favorite.
    3. Robin Robertson: A bit on the nasal side, but he has charisma.
    4. Sonny Strait: The charisma is there, but the energy is missing.
    5. Keith Silverstein: Okay, this is a good voice but I don't know what else to say.
    6. William Difrus: Honestly, he sounds a bit old fashioned.

Just my personal opinion and I’m not dissing the voices we have (I’m not a sub vs dub guy, I can and like to enjoy both) but hearing Tony Oliver as Rick Hunter, Lupin, Harry McDowell, Ejiji Date, Hajiki Sanada, Lancer, Ulquiorra Cifer and Minato Namikaze has me convinced that he would have made a excellent voice for BOTH Monkey D. Luffy AND Gol D. Roger from One Piece. He has even voiced a character from the show.
For Luffy, I could envision him using one of or a variation of his voices for Rick, Lupin, or Hajiki for Luffy in general and for the first part of the series but when he gets serious and for the second part, his voice shifts and evolves into Minato. Plus, Luffy could be considered Hispanic (according to Oda, in the real world, Luffy would be Brazilian and in the live action show, he played by a Mexican actor) like Tony who’s Puerto Rican.
For Roger, I could see him using his voices for Eiji, Harry, Lancer, Ulquiorra (imagine him speaking as if he was a Arracnar who could understand and feels emotions) or Minato.
