Look at your set up as well on that pond the showers are at air temperature so your cooling the water way faster than the heat pump can heat it. Showers need to be backed right off during the winter months if you intend to leave them running. My set up has enough fluid k1 to enable me to turn my shower completely off during winter if I so choose. This reduces the heating bill massively. Also if the manufacturer says you can get away with say a 12kw heat pump always go bigger 15k or 18k if you can afford it. It’s false economy to be under gunned with these thing, always over spec, so you have total confidence in it and it’s not struggling. I’m on my 3rd heat pump and have been running them on my 7000 gallon pond now for 20 years.
Without coming across cocky I'm pretty sure i stated this would be the case in the hope some might learn. The controllers are set to fault(cut out) at a set temp, 5c. You could set this lower but you'll still be pissing in the wind as they are then no longer efficient and then over worked. These mini ashp are designed for small pool's/hot tubs from May to September to back up inline heaters. I use mine on my indoor 5k pond so that pond holds 24c consistently from May to September. Currently the mini ashp like yourself is being called for heat but won't come on, so my inline heater is now picking up to maintain 11-12c. One more point to consider, holding 15c on your main pond is achieving nothing at all, either maintain 18c or 12-8c. Cheers
Can you box it in with some insulation round it only allowing air round where needed. Just see also will they go in your sheds. Good look. Welcome back.
James,You have got to cover your pond to keep the heat in otherwise your electric bill will be monstrous. The small heat pump and the larger pump will send your electric through the roof. Have a look at your electric meter when they are both running. I have a Thermotech 9kw heating my 13000l pond which is covered in the winter. It’s set at 14’c at the moment. The other benefit I have is that I have PV panels on the roof and batteries and an electric car which means I have electric at 7p a kw between 11.30 and 05.30 when I charge the car and batteries. My electric bill is a third of yours.
That`s bad news with the heat pump , James . I just had a quick look at the UK Koi Supplies website and the description of that model only mentions swimming pools ! If they`re selling them to koi pond owners , knowing that they don`t work below 5 degrees - there`s going to be a lot of peed off people ! I hope the other one works OK . It`ll be given a good work out over the next few days . Looking forward to seeing how it goes - I`m after one , myself !
@@JamesTHEKOIwhisperer123 I know you'll be giving it a fair and honest review. Just a thought - would it be possible to run both ponds off one heat pump , or would you be worried about cross - contamination?
I reckon just move your grow ons in the main pond over winter. Save the money from the running costs on the grow on and spend it on heating the main pond. You got plenty pf filtration on there to keep them all ticking over all winter. Onces its warmed up in the spring fire it back up and move them back over

Just be careful around multiple ASHP. Permitted development only allows for ONE Air source heat pump to be installed on a property. Any more and you are required to apply for planning permission from the local council. Just a heads up, dont get caught out👍
I have just set the same pump up today and got that same code, but after messing around with it, you can adjust the cut off temp and the code goes away and it comes back on.
Hello James that’s why I was asking you the question when you got that heat pump for your grow on system what’s the minimum temperature that it will effectively work down to.
Make your self a polycarbonate bifold door for the front and a polycarbonate side panel. You may even be able to get a greenhouse company to cut you some side panels made to measure. The polycarbonate green house i built holds the heat very well.
James look into fitting an STC to it. Ur bro in law cud do it. Cost about 10 quid. My dream did the same but the STC means u can lower the temp to anything with 0.5 degrees
Your small heat pump is not an inverter system it's a fixed speed unit, hence why they are cheap. They are designed to heat a pool or hot tub really which would generally be used in the warmer months. The larger unit you have is full inverter driven and clearly working a treat.
Cheers for the video mate, I've not fitted mine yet so think I'll wait till the spring now 👍 Some beauty's coming on in the grow on mind 😍 Looking the absolute Hammer 🔨
I just sent back my mini pump- as not fit for purpose. I’ve had every single problem that you had, once the weather got colder. Temps up & down like a yo-yo. Just plumbed in a Ramera i9 about 4 hours ago. Works down to -15 - heats from 5 to 40. Comes with WiFi. Cost £1750. My fish couldn’t take it any more.
Just put the small pond fish into big one for now until temperature rises and enclose the big one with sheeting best of both world yes be cramped but better for you and bill bud big enough for a few months and then think about enclosing pipe work etc on small one when got money best option to be honest end of the day winter is not long time so no need to move fish on bud
To be fair mate. Like you say you haven’t heated it before now. As the saying goes if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. I would just leave how you have had it from the beginning the fish have adapted and you don’t have the worry of the heater packing up over night and temps dropping 👍🏻
As you say , having that heat pump is to stop the temperature of the water from fluctuating, at least in the UK and over the winter months., so anyone wanting that should not buy that specific pump.. It's seems pretty ludicrous to me really and I would hope it advertises this point obviously and not tucked away somewhere in the small print. I would be extremely disappointed if that was my purchase, and I was not fully made aware of this. Maybe you were and it's an annoying mistake on your part, but maybe you should of been made aware at point of purchase also ? I feel for you james, that's all.
