- I compare the classic Forsaken (1998) with its new remastered version (2018), in 4K resolution. Forsaken had been a good Descent clone back in the days... If you aren't able to run the old game on your PC (it isn't as easy as starting Dosbox), you can purchase the Remaster. Otherwise the graphical differences aren't big enough to justify the new version, in my opinion.

A lot of these comments fail to recognize what Nightdive studios remasters are all about. They are re-releasing old games that are difficult to run on modern operating systems. The point is to keep it very close to the original game but make it easier to run on Windows 7,8,10, adding widescreen support, improved controller support and minor bug fixes and tweaks. It's not about remastering the graphics at all, except to add little things like anti-aliasing, texture filtering and SSAO.
EDIT: Nightdive should have just called their re-releases Special Editions and people would not be losing their minds over it.
But certainly they look a lot better, the inclusion of motion blur in this game feels extremely nice to be honest
What a load of utter w*nk. It is ridiculous comments like this that have contributed to the gaming industry being saturated with such lazy releases as this. Of course it is a misrepresentation, ffs they renamed it Forsaken Remastered!!! They could have simply released it, the name change incorrectly implies that it has been remastered. It boils my piss when I see such weak comments defending what is clearly something a very simple mod could do, given the modding community I wouldnt at all be surprised if there was a superior one out there, free. Nightdive studios, who gives one, it is about the product and this is not acceptable. That game is identical save for some very minor expected tweaks.

thesomething79 The term remaster is from the music and film industry and is sometimes dubious and controversial in those usages as well. It doesn't mean anything specific with regards to video games. It certainly doesn't say new textures and assets. To believe that this release is misrepresented is to willfully ignore the product description, screenshots, trailer, etc which show exactly what it is. If you don't like the price then obviously don't buy it.
thesomething79: It REALLY pisses me off as well, this is a bulls#it excuse for a "re-master" of what could have been an AWESOME remaster, with rather minor visual upgrades. I've always wanted this to be re-mastered, but now, because of this sleazy move by NightDive, it will probably never happen.
The original looks much better, the new one is just blurry.

This was the first game i played on my then new Voodoo 2 machine in 1998 and it absolutely blew my mind after only playing games like Monkey Island before...❤❤❤
What did they even change?
Not much: Polycount is the same, textures are the same, effects are the same. Only resolution, motion blur, anti-aliasing and "ambient occlusion" (which is useless considering the blocky nature of the game and the low polycount) are new. Don't get me wrong: I liked the game back then but that is one of those remasters which isn't really a remaster (see Turok).
But at least a classic is now playable on modern PCs. It took me three hours to configure the old Forsaken so it could run on Win10 for this video...
They also added a bunch of levels and enemies that weren't on the PC version.
Try playing the original in 4k and reading the HUD text... not easy!
This is one of the laziest Remasters I‘ve ever seen.
Text, lighting, textures and 4k resolution. Just a nice quality port.

Biofreaks!!!! Yup! I believe it was on the OG PlayStation. I played that at my cousin’s house.
I played this a lot, and I mean a LOT on the Nintendo64. Playing the remaster on Steam was great, even if it wasn't the same. But then I got to unlock one of the N64 levels and seeing the old low res textures with the compressed music play in was the sudden nostalgia wave I got. It was amazing.
And yes I always have the single player N64 hud on all the time
Yep got this on release back then. Took A bus ride to the mall and purchased. My brother and I could not stop vs on this game, it was very addictive
Forsaken graphics look great for its time it was more because of the artwork skill. Everything looked balance and not out of place.
Aquí en Maturín Venezuela, se montaron negocios con solo PlayStation 1 y Nintendo 64, con sus 4 controles era perfecto jugar en grupo, hasta torneos se hacían todos los días era una maravilla ir a jugar y encontrarte a más personas jugando y esperando su turno, conversando, y aprendiendo trucos de los más experimentádos, brutalmente bien.

is it possible to disable this giant crosshair hud thing in the middle?
You can only disable the whole HUD, not just the middle part, so you'll end up with no crosshair, no other info, nothing... this is more for the hardcore gamer... But I understand your point. I think it is annoying, too.

devs already posted a upcoming patch will have a option to have a smaller hud similar to the classic version looking at the screenshot they showed.

Not much difference. Show the original running on a 1998 PC. It would have been much slower.

E.g. added a needless motion blur (can bet it is tough af to find a PC incapable of running a PS1 game in 144 or 165 FPS today, so...) and that huge bullseye in the center, wtf...
should have kept same hud as original...you have the cluttered console version of it turned on :(

The scale of these games never looked right.. You're supposed to be shoot life sized aircraft and tanks but they always look like toys.. weird.

Steam said this is 1 GB. How could this possibly be 1 GB? It looks just like the original on my Win95 PC with a Voodoo card back when it came out.

Everyone who likes old games knows that it is a pain to get these games to run on a modern pc and for some it is simply hopeless. And that's exactly what this remaster is about. It is not intended to add photorealistic graphics, but to make the game playable on the most modern systems without destroying the original aesthetics.

Cześć. Wczoraj zakupiłem remasterowanego forsakena na Gog'u, gdyż zależało mi na tym, by pograć z kimś w multiplayu, ale jak tylko wchodzę w wyszukiwarkę gier to nigdy nikogo nie ma. Jak założę grę to również nikt nie dołącza. U Ciebie też tak jest, czy to tylko u mnie tak..?
Just today may 20 a friend of mine gave me forsaken for nintendo 64.Thus since they have it for Xbox 1 too will buy it as well.This game is total rampage.

Multi-player was limited to LAN, direct connect, or split-screen when this game was released. The code would have to be completely rewritten to include modern networking, which is outside the scope of a remaster project.
I wish this was on PS4.

Waste of time doing this remaster they didn't even bothered to make new Highers textures to me this is just lazy cash grab. I don't want to play old games on my pc unless they update the visuals. Give this game some respect just making it to run on newer pc with a bit off filtering here and there just don't cut it for me and isn't good enough.
Night dive studio done the same with doom64 they just done a bit of colour and lighting filter made it run on new hardware but couldn't even be bothered to put in mouse look in the game as an OPTION and didn't even put in new high res textures. I don't want to hear people saying that's because that want it to look and play like the original as closes as possible because they could of made it like Halo mcc where you can turn of the new textures' and play it how the orignal did look there is no excuses it just being lazy.
I would of love to play doom64 in its full glory with newer high res textures and better modern lighting or ray tracing with mouse look up and down and then add in more enemies. This was why i played the doom64 ce version using gzdoom playing in 4k with mouse look and all the advantage gzdoom has to offer and it looks a dam better than what night dives did shame noone made a higher texture pack it would of just look stunning

This was a total missed opportunity to revive a really awesome multiplayer game. If they had increased the poly count and gone with high resolution textures, this game would be awesome. Instead, it was just a BS move to make a couple of bucks on the cheap, off of a 20 year old game that had become abandon-ware. The motive is now clear and its insulting to the intelligence of old-school Forsaken fans. Now that NightDive (Samuel Villareal) owns this IP, there's little to no chance that the game will be given the modern face-lift that it has deserved for so long. Ironically, if NightDive had done just a TINY BIT to make the game LOOK closer to current gen (IF ONLY by increasing the poly count and using HI REZ textures), they would draw more new and old players and CERTAINLY be able to increase their profits by a large margin---and NightDive would likely be revered, instead of coming off as a scammer. "Re-mastered" is a completely deceptive title for this for-profit-only dust-off. Shame on you, NightDive. SHAME ON YOU. This game deserved SO MUCH BETTER. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I bought this game(again) from NightDive this time, hoping that there would be a larger community of players than there are. I have massive buyer's remorse.
I agree. In its current state they should have published it on GOG so modern systems can run it and leave out the "Remastered" title. There are many unchanged classic games on GOG which don't call themselves "remastered" just because they can run on Win 10. A typical "Remaster" has visible improvements.
Game Intros & Finales: Forsaken is already available for free, perfectly playable on modern systems, and has been for several years. Its called ProjectX. As I said before, this game NEEDED a remaster. Instead, someone found a way of re-releasing the old FREE abandon-ware original, put zero work into it, slapped "Remastered" on it, and now is profiting from it. It's a pretty sleazy thing to do.

@@patmeonduhback4384 It does have the N64 levels in it in fairness so there is value in that. But yeah projectx actually looks better, because it comes with some high-res textures that a Russian fan made. This remaster has some garbage motion blur that I turn off and everything else is the same. It's a shame they couldn't do some remastered textures but I'd bet they would be horrible AI upscaled ones anyway. Tomb Raider 1 and 2 for the Ipad had some pretty decent remade textures (even then they didn't finish the textures as the last levels e.g. the mines and Atlantis, they kept the old textures).
Anyway the n64 levels are what got me to spend the 7 euro, too bad the N64 levels are generally worse than the PS1 levels I guess due to memory limitations or whatever. And the N64 enemies are very wierd, they are ultra low poly and look like wierd abstract shapes floating around whereas the PS1 enemies looked like actual craft

Aunque tire mi dinero en un mal juego de Nightdive, no me preocupa, ya que, lo estan usando para el remake de System Shock, o traernos juegos olvidados.

Infelizmente esse relançamento da Night Dive não possui modo LAN, então pra quem quiser jogar em rede, a melhor opção ainda é o clássico.
