One correction is the name of the fort was Fort McHenry. And also it was originally written as a poem called in defense of Fort McHenry and then later it was put to music and became the national anthem but the story of the battle is true

U.S. Army veteran here. Thank you for showing respect to our nation. Wherever I was sent overseas, we started each day by raising the flags. First, the host nations flag would go up while playing thier national anthem, then ours. A salute was given to both nations everytime, by all US military personnel. I remember melting in the sun in Djibouti rendering honors to that nation everyday. May God bless you and keep you.

As an American should I respect the government who spent the last 20 years in illegal wars based on nothing but oil greed? Should I respect the state who would rather have Jets and Carriers than Education and Health Care for it's people? Should I respect the state who seems so intent on dividing it's people on social issues while the rich continue to exploit the labor classes? America needs more criticism, not blind patriotism.

I listened to your national anthem. I thought that the music was beautiful, and inspiring. The lyrics were thoughtful and hopeful. Most importantly they paid respect to Almighty God.
I know there are things that separate our people. However, there are things that also are common to both of our peoples as both of our countries once had to live under British rule, our countries are free, and we value faith. It is my hope that we can build upon the commonalities between our people and have a better relationship.

I trust you will remember the *real* men who died at Fort McHenry: Lt Levi Claggett and Sgt John Clemm were manning a cannon that received a direct hit, militiaman Charles Messinger was carrying water to the outer perimeter, and Thomas Beeston was hit by shapnel. Not the fictional people that the pastor injects into his rabble-rousing sermon that bears little resemblance to historical reality: nobody died propping up the flagpole. It was a 75-foot, two-ton, repurposed ship's mast: it was not hit during the bombardment, but the idea that any number of bodies could prop it up is (shall we say) fanciful and absurd.

As a wounded Army veteran, I prefer the true story. And the truth is that we were smarter and tougher than the british, and we had the high ground. The bombardment lasted for 27 HOURS. We did NOT sit there overnight dying holding the flag. We were too busy shooting back. We fought, as warriors, in glory. We fought so effectively that Only FOUR Americans died at the battle for Fort McHenry. There were no women or children, because no American warrior would put their family in harms way like that. The song is about the fresh clean new flag that we raised that morning, as a big middle finger to the British as they sailed away. This was the glorious Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812.

I LOVED your reaction to The Star Spangled Banner & want to share a story about the first time I learned about our flag. My family was watching an important sporting event, probably the Oklahoma Sooners football and the Star Spangled Banner was playing on the TV. I was the youngest child at the time and didn't stop playing with my new, blond Barbie to stand up and put my hand over my heart. My father put a firm hand, and my father had huge hands, to my rear end & I'll never forget what he said. "Mary Frances, the only reason you don't kneel to Queen Elizabeth today is because old men & young boys held that flag up with their bodies after England terrorized that old fort!!! Now you stand up with your brother and sister and put your hand over your heart. No honey, your other heart." I was about three, maybe four. No, I DEFINITELY would have known better by four!! Nothing like a well-placed hand to the rear end of a three-year-old to emphasize a point!! 🇺🇸 eM

The video is on here, every one surrounding the palace were singing the words and wiping tears away. There are many incredible and impressive acts of bravery and sacrifice that are well-documented in our American history, but sadly this is an outdated and exaggerated recounting that isn't supported by historical records.
The shelling of Fort McHenry happened, and the flag was still standing at the end, but there are no records (including Francis Scott Key's own writings about the event) that suggest American soldiers held the flagpole upright by their own hands/bodies. That part is more or less a legend.
Also, it wasn't the entire British war fleet (which was about 1000 ships strong at that time), nor even 100 - there were approximately 19 ships, and not all are thought to have participated in the shelling. That being said, even if only a dozen or so ships participated in the shelling, it was an incredibly brutal attack and the resilience and bravery of the American soldiers deserves admiration; we don't need to claim that there were 100 ships in order for the story to be inspiring.
I want to emphasize again that I'm not trying to downplay or detract from the impressiveness and bravery of the American soldiers during the defense of the fort. But I think it's important to celebrate and appreciate our history as it happened - without distorting or exaggerating the facts.

The pastor doesn't even have SOLDIERS as being IN the fort, just civilians! This video is an INSULT to the soldiers who actually WERE there defending the fort AND the city of Baltimore beyond it.
More needs to be said about how bad this video is, how wrong the history told here is, and how no one should be watching this and thinking that it's true. Just because it's on the internet, doesn't mean it's true. Look this battle up, people. This tale is NOT the way this happened!

As a rule, if a video makes you cry, then you are being manipulated.
If you read the description of the original video, you will see that they admit this is not an accurate account of what happened, and suggest that people "look up the accurate story if want the precise info". For the record, the only accurate parts here are Francis Scott Key's name and profession, that there was a battle around a fort outside Baltimore (the name of which he continually gets wrong) and that A flag (but not the same flag) was flying the next day. Everything else is embellished to the point of fiction. There were no hundreds of prisoners below decks, no "entire battle fleet of the Royal Navy", no women and children sheltering in the fort, no ultimatum for the surrender of the country, no bodies holding up the flag. And the quote about "dying on our feet rather than living on our knees" is from the 20th century Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, more than a century after George Washington died.
This is not a lecture by a historian, it is a recording of a sermon by a pastor named David C Gibbs Jr (hence the 'Amens' you can hear in the background), who has no historical credentials whatsoever, and obviously subscribes to the idea that feelings are more important than facts. The problem is that when you embellish real events with fictional details and fictional sacrifice, you take away from the real sacrifice made by real people.
Everyone who sees this video now thinks of "the men who died holding the flag", when in fact the flagpole suffered no damage, and nobody died holding it up. Nobody will remember the *real* people who died: artillerymen Lt Claggett and Sgt Clemm who were manning a cannon that received a direct hit, militiaman Charles Messinger carrying water to the outer perimeter, and militiaman Thomas Beeston hit by shapnel.
That is the corrosive result of warping real events into myths.

Loved their reaction and the analysis at the end was just so fantastic. These guys get it! Every country can be proud of their anthem and their flag as a representation of the people (not of the government). And should learn the real stories and significance of their stories. Yes, self love to the point of narcissism can be bad/dangerous, but it doesn't mean we shouldn’t love ourselves and our people at all. Anthems and flags help bring people together and love the people of your nation as a whole, and that's something everyone can celebrate and enjoy.

The Battle of Baltimore is where the tradition came from of never letting the flag touch the ground. It is a constant reminder and respect given to those patriots who, knowing full well that they would die, refused to let our flag touch the ground. We continue to hold it up in their honor, never touching the ground for a moment. .........I just searched through the emoji's available on youtube looking for an american flag, the only flags are the gay pride flag and transgender flag...Google is an American company that doesn't support their nation...

This is patriotic folklore. Key sailed down to secure the release of an elderly friend. He was never on a prison ship nor negotiated for their release. The battle was absolutely a horrific and constant bombardment of Ft. McHenry. However it is an earth-bermed structure which easily withstood the attack. The flagpole in the fort was extremely substantial and never fell. In the morning Key viewed the flag flying through a spy glass from his ship five miles off-shore. 6 Americans were killed and 24 injured in the attack. This battle was during The War of 1812.

I wish I could hear the story behind the creation of your national anthem. I only recently (within the past couple of years) heard the story of the Partition and I openly wept for the sheer scale of the horror, cruelty and suffering surrounding that event in your history.
